Do you enjoy your school life in the classroom? Would you like to learn through outdoor
activities? If you want to try a new way to learn, the forest school is an ideal place for you.
In the forest school, students learn things by seeing, listening, touching, smelling and
tasting. Today, you can find forest schools in man y countries around the world, like the
USA, Australia, the UK and China.
There are no fixed lessons in the forest schools. “We have a plan for everyday learning.
But we are ready to change it at any time. If it rain s, we’d like to take students to learn the
weather. We also spend much time teaching them life skills,” says Kelsey Boulton. A few
years ago, Boulton built a forest school in Canada.
Compared with classroom learning, forest schools have a few advantages(优势).
Students can be stronger. The more time they spend on outdoor exercise, the healthier they
will become.
Also, students can get more interested in learning. In forest schools, students do not sit
in the classroom and listen to what the teachers say. Instead, they join in all kinds of
outdoor activities to learn about the world. They become more willing to ask questions and
find answers by themselves, so they can feel the joy of learning more easily.
What’s more, students are happier in forest schools. They see real horses, cows and
sheep. They go camping by the river in summer and play on the ice in winter. Cindy, an 8-
year-old girl, took lessons in a forest school last year. When birds flew to sit on her
shoulders and hands, how happy she was!
Forest schools can help students become better through outdoor activities. And more
parents are thinking about taking their children there.
