Saving the Tradition of Making Indigo Cloth
Yang Xiuying, 76, sits at a wooden loom(织布机).
As her fingers pass the shuttle(织布机的梭子) back and
forth through the cotton threads, the old machine comes to
5life.
Ever since she was a young girl, Yang has been
making indigo cloth. “You can never buy this type of hand
made cloth at the market,” she says.
For the Dong people in Guizhou, making indigo cloth has a long tradition. The skill has been
passed down from mother to daughter over generations. Nearly every family makes its own cloth.
This traditional skill, unfortunately, is now under threat(威胁). Young people show little
interest in it. Some of them have moved to big cites to find better jobs.
Local officials want to save the tradition. They are trying to change young people’s attitude
towards it. One program has set up several cloth-making factories in Guizhou. After learning how
to make indigo cloth, young Dong people can now find jobs easily. They can also work closer to
home.
Traditionally, the Dong people consider indigo cloth as important as rice. Many Dong women
spend countless hours making the cloth. They rise and start working very early in the morning. To
make the cloth shiny, it must be rubbed(搓)and beaten hard. The noise of cloth being beaten often
wakes the whole village up.
Almost every Dong woman over the age of 40 has a tub(盆)for indigo dye(染料). The cloth
has to be placed in the dye over lots of rounds to gain the rich color. The process of coloring usually
takes two weeks.
Yang holds out her purple and wrinkled(有皱纹的)hands. “They say she who has the darkest
indigo marks on her hands makes the best cloth,” the old lady says proudly.
4. What is Yang Xiuying doing at the beginning of the article?
A. She is repairing an old machine.
B. She is making some cotton cloth.
C. She is selling some newly-made indigo cloth.
D. She is teaching her children how to make indigo cloth.
5. According to the article, which of the following charts shows the correct steps of making
indigo cloth?
6. What have local officials done to save the tradition of making indigo cloth?
A. They have forced some young people to learn the tradition.
B. They have helped some young people find jobs in big cities.
C. They have brought some young people back from big cities.
D. They have opened several cloth-making factories in Guizhou.
7. What does Yang probably want to say in the last paragraph?
6A. She can make good indigo cloth.
B. Her daughter is also good at making indigo cloth.
C. The tradition of making indigo cloth is under threat.
D. She has taught many people how to make indigo cloth.

“There’s nothing to discuss,” barked my husband when I told him that Rosie, our 17-year-old
daughter, had asked whether she could go to Kavos, Greece, for a holiday with her friends. “Of
course she can’t. She’s too young to travel without the presence of an adult. It’s completely out of
the question.”
So how come I found myself standing, two weeks later, at Gatwick Airport? Tearfully, I
watched our eldest child disappear through the security checkpoint. In four hours’ time, she would
be in Kavos. It’s 2,500 kilometers away from England!
There comes a time when you have to let your baby go---for many parents, it’s around the
age of 17. We know that there is likely to be something wilder than hanging around by the pool
and building sandcastles, but the time has come to trust that they’ll look after themselves.
But I still felt worried. Rosie tried to put my mind at rest. She said she and her friends would
always look after one another and that it really, really was all going to be okay.
After we had waved our last goodbye at the airport, I looked back. She was, to my surprise,
looking back at me, too. Teenagers want to cut free, but it’s a frightening business for them, too.
We made Rosie promise to text as soon as she had arrived in Kavos and at least once a day
after that. Around 9 a.m. on the first morning, her first message came through. It was twelve hours
since I had left her at Gatwick. And all I got was: “I’m here.”
I wish there were safer places than these so-called teen destinations(目的地). But like all the
dangers that life can hold for them, at some stage, all you can do is warn them, warn them again,
warn them once more, and then hope that some of your messages have got through.
My daughter got home safely. So did her friends. But Rosie is now talking about a similar
journey next year. And my alarm bells have already started ringing.
8. According to the author, how much time should it take her daughter to fly to Kavos?
A. About two hours. B. About four hours.
C. About eight hours. D. About twelve hours.
9. How did Rosie feel about her trip to Kavos?
A. She was nervous but excited.
B. She was afraid of travelling alone.
C. She was forced to go by her friends.
D. She was very confident and not worried at all.
10. The author didn’t receive a message from her daughter until _______.
A. her daughter was about to return home
B. two days after her daughter had left her
C. her daughter had safely landed in Kavos
D. twelve hours after she had left her daughter
11. We can learn from the last paragraph that the author _______.
A. now encourages teenagers to travel freely without their parents
B. believes it’s useful to warn teenagers about the dangers they might face
7C. won’t allow her daughter to travel again without having an adult present
D. still worries about her daughter’s safety even after she’s returned from a successful trip
三、阅读填空 先通读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容,在文章后表格的空格内填入一个最
恰当的单词。每个空格只能填一个单词。

Have you ever regretted what you did in the past? Anyone around you will have no difficulty
in telling his regrets. As we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices. What
can we do to prevent this happening?
Make better plans
If you begin to do something, you need to make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the
better .You will know what comes first and what comes last. You’ll also know what you should do
and what you shouldn’t do. If changes happen, you can have more time to deal with them.
Live a more active life
You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed. You also need to
be kind. “Thank you”can bring a smile to someone’s face. Learn to say “sorry” and don’t be angry
with others.
Find the right friend
A friend may make your life and he or she can break your life as well. So you need to think
twice when you choose a friend. Good friends will always better your ideas.
When you have problems, ask others for help. That little help may get you good results.
Never fear failure
Everybody fails. Even the greatest person failed. We should not fear failure, because failure is
not the end of the road. We must take failure as a chance to learn and improve ourselves.
Life is good. We don’t have to live in our past, but we do hope that we can plan better, live
better, and work better when we have the chance to do so.

Most of us get our earliest life lessons from fairy tales, like “True love can overcome(战胜)
anything” and “Even a frog can turn into a prince”. However, when we grow up, we start to learn
new things about life, especially that love doesn’t always win, and that a frog is just a frog. Even so,
our love for fairy tales never dies. Just look at cartoons like The Lion King and Frozen which have
millions of fans young and old.
“Fairy tales are always there because they are the stories of our lives in the purest form.” wrote
US writer Laura Packer. “They are stories of love and loss, happiness and sadness, riches and
dreams.”
Fairy tales are all about the real world. But if children only see just one side of life, adults
usually see the other. For example, in the 2014 film Maleficent, we’re told the tale of Sleeping
8Beauty from the views of the evil queen. Unlike the children’s version(版本)of the story, we see
that the queen wasn’t an evil at birth. Instead, she experiences great lossers, leading to her “evil”
side. And in US writer James Garner’s bedtime story books, he tells the classic story of Little Red
Riding Hood, but with a modern touch: When the wolf tells Red Riding Hood that it isn’t safe for
a little girl to walk through the woods alone, she calls the wolf sexist(性别歧视者), which connects
with today’s women’s rights movement.
It looks like fairy tales aren’t just stories our parents read us at bedtime. They may usually start
with “Once upon a time…”, but as we grow older, we learn that every story doesn’t always need a
“Happily ever after” to be a good one.
Learning From Fairy Tales
We get our lessons from fairy tales at our early age.
Introduction Fairy tales are mainly stories that come from our daily lives.
Fairy tales are 1 among millions of people young and old.
Children think the queen in Sleeping Beauty is a 2 evil.
Adults think that the queen’s experience 3 her evil side.
Different ideas The wolf thinks it dangerous for Red Riding Hood to walk through
the woods by 4 .
James Garner thinks of the wolf as a sexist.
Fairy tales are more than stories our parents read us at bedtime.
Conclusion
Not every fairy story needs a happy 5 .
