Yasmin Alkashef grew up in Egypt learning English and Arabic. From a very young age, she knew she loved
languages. In the fourth grade, she began learning French. Her love for languages continued into high school,
where she began training to be a translator. Now she interprets and translates for people professionally.
Alkashef has been a translator for 20 years. She’s a member of the American Translators Association board of
directors and a certified Arabic-English translator, a certified court interpreter, and a conference interpreter. Though
the jobs have similarities, translators work with written material while interpreters work with spoken language.
Confidence is crucial to both jobs.
Most interpreters and translators are freelancers (自由职业者), which means they’re not employed as staff for
an organization or a company. Being a freelancer means doing a variety of work for a variety of clients. Alkashef
enjoys this aspect of her job. “It’s always fun, because every week is different, and the topics are always different,”
she says. “One day, you are translating a document about clean water, and the next day, you are in court,
interpreting a case. The following day, you’re at a conference about international peace. You learn a lot, because
you get to get in touch with so many different people.”
Alkashef has interpreted at court cases and film festivals, and at political events with people such as presidents
and kings. The work can be exciting and attractive, but also challenging and sad.
“Interpreters speak in the first person,” Alkashef says. “When they say something sad or painful, theirsubconscious does not understand that it is somebody else’s story. So interpreters come home with this burden, and
they have to do self-care to take care of their mental health.”
Alkashef is most grateful that through her work, she’s able to help others. “It’s more than just the words. The
interpreter brings an understanding of the cultures, of history, and of a lot of things,” she says. Her work has
enriched her life in many ways, and she tries to impart what she learns to those around her.
4. What distinguishes translators from interpreters according to the text?
A. Their wage level. B. Their working time.
C. The medium they use. D. The client type they serve.
5. Why does Alkashef enjoy being a freelancer?
A Because of stable income. B. Because of diverse tasks.
C. Because of predictable routine. D. Because of fewer responsibilities.
6. What challenge do interpreters face mentally according to Alkashef?
A. Emotional stress. B. Language barriers. C. Time management. D. Technical difficulties.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To compare Alkashef’s work with others’.
B. To highlight the impact of Alkashef’s work.
C. To present Alkashef’s ability to understand others.
D. To emphasize the importance of words of gratitude.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. B
C
It is widely thought that our galaxy, the Milky Way, is certain to collide (碰撞) with the neighboring
Andromeda galaxy sometime around 5 billion years from now. But according to new research, maybe we shouldn’t
count on this multigalactic collision happening as previously expected.
In a study published recently in Nature Astronomy, researchers who analyzed data from the European Space
Agency’s space telescope and NASA’s telescope say the event is more of a coin flip than a given. The team
suggests there’s just about a 50-50 chance of the two galaxies colliding within the next 10 billion years or so. When
you look at the next 4-5 billion years, that chance drops down to around 2%.
In other space news, scientists are discussing about a star that is small in mass but huge in energy. TOI-6894 is
a red dwarf (红矮星) that is roughly 20% as massive as our sun. But in another study published in Nature
astronomy, researchers say they’ve spotted a giant planet orbiting the little star. The planet, called TOI-6894b, is
described as a low-density gas giant. Astronomers say the presence of a gas giant that surrounds such a small star isso surprising that it challenges the most widely accepted theory of planet formation.
The theory, called core accretion (积聚), suggests that giant planets are born when their solid cores get
massive enough to start pulling in lots of gas. Smaller stars generally lack enough gas and dust to allow for such a
process, but this red dwarf ended up with a gas giant going around it anyhow. Because red dwarf stars are super
common in our galaxy, this could mean gas giants are more plentiful than we thought.
The researchers will use the James Webb Space Telescope to study the planet’s atmosphere, which should
provide more clues about its formation.
8. How does the author begin paragraph 1?
A. By comparing the data. B. By quoting from documents.
C. By concluding from some previous research. D. By mentioning a common astronomical belief.
9. What does the underlined part “a coin flip” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A given chance. B. A constant rule. C. An uncertain situation. D. An apparent choice.
10. What do we know about TOI-6894?
A. It is orbiting TOI-6894b. B. There is a huge planet around it.
C. There is little energy in it. D. It is twice as massive as the sun.
11. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Gas giants require no solid cores. B. Smaller stars do not form satellites.
C. Red dwarf s are extremely rare in the universe. D. There may exist more huge gas planets in space.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. D
D
Researchers from Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanic Garden will study the carbon capture (碳
捕获) effects of soil additives on agricultural fields.
For the world to meet the global average temperature goals set forth in the 2015 Paris Agreement, we need to
actively decrease carbon emissions (排放). Earth and planetary sciences professor Andy Jacobson suggests Earth
science can help it and that one possible way is to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO ) and lock it away for a
2
few thousand years.
The chemical weathering of rocks is a natural phenomenon that transforms atmospheric CO into a stable
2
mineral form. When CO dissolves in water, it creates a substance that can break down rocks. This transformation
2
releases elements from certain rocks and changes CO into a stable form. Over time, these elements combine to
2
form minerals that are the building blocks of many natural structures and rocks. This transformation helps to lock
carbon in a solid form, which plays an important part in stabilizing Earth’s climate over the long term.“Over much shorter human timescales, this stable form of CO acts as a sink for atmospheric CO ,” says
2 2
Jacobson. Can we speed up the weathering process and actively remove carbon from the atmosphere at rates fast
enough to help reduce the impact of modern climate change?
Enhanced rock weathering was proposed as a strategy of decreasing carbon emissions decades ago but only
recently gained interest. An article in a 2020 magazine estimated that enhanced weathering could remove up to 2
billion tons of CO annually from the atmosphere by 2050.
2
Jacobson is leading a team of researchers to investigate this negative emissions technology. In a series of
experimental systems that simulate natural conditions at the garden, researchers will test the effects from adding
different types of rock to soils used to grow various crops. The soil additives will include a volcanic rock that
chemically weathers faster than other rocks and minerals, potentially speeding up CO capture and storage.
2
12. What does Jacobson stress about Earth science in paragraph 2?
A. Its scientific origin as a principle. B. Its present limitations in carbon capture.
C. Its potential role in achieving climate goals. D. Its logical accuracy in temperature prediction.
13. What is mainly discussed in paragraph 3 concerning rocks?
A. Their natural structures. B. The reasons for their formation.
C. The process of their weathering. D. Their stable chemical composition.
14. What is the main function of the question in paragraph 4?
A. To introduce the following solution. B. To doubt the content of a magazine.
C. To summarize the previous paragraph. D. To show the fast rate of climate change.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Is Farming the Key to Carbon Capture?
B. Can Humans Stabilize the Climate of Earth?
C. What Is the Chemical Weathering of rocks?
D. How Do Carbon Emissions Speed up Global Warming?

【答案】
Smartphones are useful in daily life. They let us chat with friends, look up study materials and get news easily.
But overusing them brings problems—we may waste time on games, hurt our eyes or become less willing to
communicate face to face.
To use smartphones reasonably, we should set time limits for using them. We’d better focus on study and
outdoor activities instead of being stuck to screens. All in all, we should make use of smartphones wisely. Let’s
make smartphones helpful tools rather than barriers to our growth.

The Unspoken Language
I used to think politeness was all about words. “Please”, “thank you”, “sorry”—I set them down. But my mom,
a high school history teacher, disagreed. “Alex,” she would say over dinner, “the real respect is spoken through the
body. It’s in your posture when you stand and your attention when you listen.” I would shrug (耸肩), not really
getting it. I never thought of helping clear the table after meals, simply drifting to the couch while she worked alone
in the kitchen. To me, saying “thanks for dinner” seemed enough. My best friend Leo and I communicated withplayful smiles and eyes rolled at boring adult talk. It seemed enough.
Everything changed at our school’s community fair. Leo and I were lazily sitting behind our fundraising table.
We chatted aimlessly, barely acknowledging the passing crowd. The donation box in front of us remained
embarrassingly light. Our fundraiser was failing. Then an elderly man paused at our display. Remembering my
mom’s words, I made a choice. I stopped talking, stood up straight, and offered him a sincere smile. “Are you
interested in supporting our team, sir?” I said. His serious face softened. He made a small donation and left with a
nod. It felt like a tiny victory.
The real shock came in history class a week later. Our teacher announced a guest speaker. My jaw dropped
when Mr Evans, the man from the fair, walked in—a retired museum curator (馆长)! My heart raced. Did he
remember me as that lazy boy? He spoke passionately, using his hands to shape stories from the past. During the
Q&A session, I gathered my courage and raised my hand, making sure to sit up and meet his eyes. He recognized
me instantly and gave me a warm, knowing smile.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】After class, Mr. Evans waved me over. “That smile was genuine at the fair, which made an old man feel
truly seen," he said. He then shared his deepest feeling in his museum — a simple, sincere nod from a visitor often
meant more to him than any oral praise. “It's a silent conversation. Young man, start one with a smile," he added.Walking home, his words echoed in my mind, weaving together with my mom's dinner-time theory. I realized they
were both telling the same truth-our bodies have a silent vocabulary, and I was just beginning to learn how to speak
it.
