You can buy chewing gum in nearly every country of the world. ① But it wasn’t always like that.
The American Indians were the first people to chew gum. This gum came from a special tree that
grew on their land. In 1848, a sailor called John Curtis began selling it. He was the first person to sell
chewing gum. The gum he sold cost just a few cents for two pieces. It became popular very quickly
even though it was very hard to chew. ②Nowadays, other things are added to the gum to make it soft
and

   sweet.

By 1890, there were hundreds of different chewing gums. The most famous name in chewing gum,
however, is probably William Wrigley. He spent a lot of money in advertising and even sent free pieces
of gum to children on their birthdays.

③He also said that

chewing gum helped people work better and

that it stopped people

   from feeling tired.

Although today many millions of people chew gum, not everyone thinks it is a good thing to do.
Many people think it is dirty. The Singapore government does not allow people to buy chewing gum.
One reason for this is that when some people have chewed all the taste out of their piece of gum, they
take it out of their mouths and put it on to the backs of seats or other places.
People make chewing gum soft and sweet ______ _______ something to it.
He also said, “Chewing gum _______ people work better and it _______ people from feeling
tired.”
II.
Mail order is a term which describes the buying of goods or services by mail delivery(邮递). The
buyer places an order for the desired products with the salesman through some remote method such as
through a telephone call or a website. Then, the products are delivered to the customer. The products are
typically delivered directly to an address supplied by the customer, such as a home address, but
sometimes the orders are delivered to a nearby retail location for the customer to pick up. Some
businessmen also allow the goods to be shipped directly to a third customer, which is an effective way
to send a gift to an out-of-town friend.
A mail order catalogue(目录)is a publication including a list of ordinary goods from a company.
Companies who publish and operate mail order catalogues are treated as cataloguers within the industry.
Goods are produced by people all over the world, such as in Australia, the USA, Canada, China etc.
And now many cataloguers, just as with most retailers(零售商), are increasingly buying goods from
China.

III.
In the UK, bus journeys are very common. Buses are often convenient(便利的)for the
people who live or work in the city center. Passengers can avoid heavy traffic and not have to
pay for the parking. However, taking the bus is just a necessary but boring part of life: they get
on the bus, pay for it and sit or find a place to stand when it is crowded. Everyone seems sad and bored.
In Latin America, however, bus trips can be wonderful. For a start, films are showed on the buses
between cities for passengers to have fun along the journeys. Local buses do not show films, but drivers
usually turn on the radio and it can be great for passengers to listen to songs and get relaxed.
Even better than films and music are the sights and sounds on the buses. Local buses always go to
parts of the town that passengers would not visit by themselves. There passengers can see shops that they
have never heard about. And they can also see other cultures of the town from the windows of the buses.
Besides, passengers’ luggage(行李) is also interesting. It is common to see a happy dog’s
head getting out of somebody’ s bag or a lovely chicken“ speaking cheerfully” under
somebody’s arm. Once on a bus in Peru, a farmer even tied a sheep to the top of the bus. It
was quite surprising.
In all, taking the bus in Latin America is really fun and unforgettable.
1. According to the passage, in the UK, how to passengers probably feel on the buses?
  They probably feel ______________________________.
2. In Latin America, how can people have fun on the buses between cities?
  They can .
3. In the writer’s opinion, what are even better than films and music on the buses?
                                     are.
4. Why does the writer think passengers’ luggage is interesting?
Because it’s common to see different kinds of on the buses.
5. What does the passage mainly tell us?
It mainly tells us about in Latin America.
2. by adding。
3. helps; stops。
    1. shopping / buying。 Mail order is a term which describes the buying of goods
or
2. making。第一段第二句中through a telephone call 可知“通过打电话的方式”,by 后接动词
的-ing 形式。
3. looking。由第二段的第一句话A mail order catalogue(目录)is a publication including a list of
ordinary goods from a company.

4. China。 And now many cataloguers, just as with most retailers(零售商), are
increasingly buying goods from China.
III.
     1. sad and bored。从第一段最后两句“they get on the bus, pay for it and sit or find a
place to stand when it is crowded. Everyone seems sad and bored.”
     2. watch a movie(movies) / see a film(film)。从第二段第二句“For a start, films are
showed on the buses between cities for passengers to have fun along the journeys.”
可以看电影,所以答案为watch a movie(movies)/see a film(film)。
    3. The sights and sound (on the buses)。从第三段第一句“Even better than films and music
are the sights and sounds on the buses.”
    4. animals。
    5. the bus trip(journey) /trips(journeys)。
the bus trip(journey) /trips(journeys)。

of a whole list of things I should never do: never accept food or candy from strangers, never get in a car
with strangers, and so on.
But if we didn’t start a conversation with strangers, we’d never make new friends. We’d never get a
job. ①We may miss the joy that comes from talking with strangers. And the more people you know, the
more chances you can find.
The following passage offers you some advice on how to ②break the ice.
Don’t just stare at your shoes. Go and say “Hi” to that new guy. It will be easier to break the ice if
you know more about different cultures.
British: Beautiful day, isn’t it?
The weather in Britain is changeable. So, it’s one of the topics the British care most about. And
there’s a simple rule: Say “Yes” whether you agree with the person’s idea on the weather or not.
③That’s because the British start a conversation using the weather so that they can continue their talk.
French: Where did you go on holiday?
To talk with a French person, the safest way is to ask about his or her last holiday. French students
enjoy a 10-to-15-day holiday every two months. French employees( 雇员)get more than six weeks of
holidays per year.
American: So, where are you from?
The US is so big and people move so often that location is always a source(来源) of talk. You can
try to find a connection with the place they’re from. For example, if someone’s from Los Angeles, you
could say, “Oh, I have a friend who studied there.”
That’s because the British start a conversation using the weather ______ ______their talk.
(4) What do you usually talk about to start a conversation with a French person?
_______________________________________________
(5) What is the main idea of the passage?

with sb.
(3)
to continue/ for continuing
use sth. to do sth.=use sth. for doing sth. 用……来做……
(4)
I/ We can/ usually talk about his/ her (last) holiday./ A holiday./ Holidays.
根据“To talk with a French person, the safest way is to ask about his or her last holiday.”
(5)
How to start/ begin a conversation with a stranger/ How to break the ice (with strangers).
文中“The following passage offers you some advice on how to break the ice.”
