53Chinese and English names
1 Read the passage and complete the table.
A Chinese name includes a family name and a given name. Most family names
date back to ancient times. They are usually from the names of a village, a state,
or an official position. For example, Qi( 齐 )comes from the state name Qi, and
Ouyang(欧阳)is the name of a township.
English names also have two parts: given names and family names. Different from
Chinese names, the order is “given name(s) + family name”. Sometimes, people have
second or third given names to honour a family member or for other purposes.
English family names are usually from where the family lived, the way they looked,
or the kind of work they did. For example, a family living with many trees and
plants might take the name Green. If they had dark hair, they were called the Blacks
or the Browns. And a person who had a good voice was named Singer.
A given name, either in Chinese or in English, carries the hope of a family for a
baby. For example, “Yong” in Chinese and “Andy” in English both mean “brave”;
“Li” in Chinese and “Lily” in English “beautiful”.

Subject: Happy holidays!
Dear Wang Mei,
It’s December 23 and Christmas is coming! I am so excited. Christmas is such
fun, but it’s very cold now. The weather in Edmonton is cold and snowy from
November to April. We have long winters.
I don’t like cold weather very much. I like summer, because I like to go
swimming. I also like to go to the beach.
My cousin Elsa is from Sydney. Sometimes my family visits hers during the
Christmas season. You probably know that December, January, and February
are summer months in Australia. We can play volleyball on the beach there. We
draw pictures in the sand and watch the tide come and take the pictures away.
It’s so much fun. I hope to see Elsa next year.
How’s the weather in your city? Do you have any plans for your holidays?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Yours,
Jenny

5 Read the passage and follow the instructions.
People don’t always talk in complete words or sentences. Sometimes, they

you later”. People use it when they’re leaving a conversation but will be back

Oxford English Dictionary.
