Construction workers recently found the ruins of a large pyramid beside a highway in Mexico.
After discovering the site, researchers collected many ancient objects that will be studied in their
laboratories over the coming months. The structure was found in June 2024 during highway
expansion work in Hidalgo, central Mexico. The discovery happened by chance as workers were
adding a third lane to the federal highway, showing how ancient structures can still be found during
modern construction projects.
Scientists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History went to study the
site. They used drones to take pictures and collected 155 items, including pieces of pottery, stone
tools, and shells. To protect the old building, they built a large wall around the pyramid, which is 43
meters long and 11.7 meters high.
The pyramid is part of an old settlement called San Miguel, built between 650-1519 CE. The
area was ruled by the “Metzca lordship,” which influenced the region until the 1500s. People have
lived in this region for a very long time, with the oldest settlements dating back at least 14,000 years.
This shows that many different groups of people have lived here over thousands of years.
Scientists keep finding hidden ancient buildings in Mexico and other parts of the Americas.
Many discoveries are made using LiDAR, a technology that uses laser light to see things concealed
under plants and trees. This tool helps archaeologists (考古学家) find old structures that they
couldn’t see just by looking at the ground.
Last year, researchers used LiDAR to find an 18-kilometer road that connected ancient Maya
cities over 1,200 years ago. In Guatemala, they also discovered a previously unknown Maya
civilization with 964 settlements connected by 177 kilometers of ancient roads. These findings show
that the Americas had complex and thriving societies long before European settlers arrived. The
discoveries remind us how advanced these ancient civilizations were, though their development was
later interrupted by colonization. Each new discovery helps build a more complete picture of these
remarkable ancient societies.24.What action did scientists take first after discovering the site?
A.They restored the pyramid. B.They contacted local authorities.
C.They removed all artifacts. D.They photographed the site.
25.What does the underlined word “concealed” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Ancient. B.Hidden. C.Risky. D.Connected.
26.What does the author convey in the last paragraph?
A.Maya civilization was primitive. B.European settlers improved local life.
C.Ancient Americas had advanced societies.D.Modern technology surpasses ancient
wisdom.
27.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Mexico builds new highways. B.Ancient ruins need protection.
C.Unexpected discovery reveals past civilization.D.Modern technology helps
archaeological work.

Tennis is a popular sport with growing impact on trends, from clothing to movies. Now, it’s
even influencing furniture design. Belgium eco-designer Mathilde Wittock is creating furniture from
discarded tennis balls. She chose to repurpose tennis balls due to their short lifespan. “It takes around
24 different manufacturing steps to produce a tennis ball, which is around five days. Then it has
such a short lifespan,” Wittock told CNN. She aims to keep the 300 million tennis balls produced
annually out of landfills.
Wittock graduated in 2021 from Central Saint Martins with degrees in product design and
natural design. Her degree project, Soundbounce, was an acoustic (隔音的) material made from
recycled tennis balls, inspired by her sensitivity to noise. “Being very sensitive to noise, the tennis
ball presented an opportunity to address this issue,” she said. “And, with noise pollution an ever-
increasing problem, its effects are still largely unknown, but it is evident that it negatively impacts
physical and mental health so creating solutions for this is key.”
Creating furniture from tennis balls is challenging. Wittock cuts each ball by hand along the
white line, removes the brand logo, and creates frames with holes where the taken-apart balls fit.
The result is a padded (衬垫) surface excellent for sound reduction. It takes her three to four weeks
to complete a chaise, which she sells for $2,900. Each ball is dyed by hand to match the client’s
space. The tennis balls Wittock uses are donated from tennis clubs. She now works with the
Federation of Wallonia in Brussels, who offered her their entire stock of 100,000 balls. This will last
for a while as Wittock can only use around 1,800 a week.
The life of these tennis balls doesn’t end as furniture. When the soft covering wears away or
the rubber breaks down, the furniture pieces can be taken apart and recycled into other useful objects
like playground mats. Being able to keep reusing materials is key to eco-design. Wittock’s work
demonstrates how discarded items can be transformed into functional, sustainable products.
28.What was Soundbounce inspired by?
A.Wittock’s love for tennis. B.Wittock’s design degrees.
C.Wittock’s sensitivity to noise. D.Wittock’s wish to recycle balls.
29.How does Wittock make the furniture sound-reducing?
A.By using special machines. B.By creating padded surfaces.
C.By adding extra coverings. D.By choosing thick materials.
30.Why does the author mention the Federation of Wallonia?
A.To show Wittock’s social skills. B.To show the large demand for balls.
C.To show the support for Wittock’s work.D.To show the popularity of Wittock’s
furniture.
31.What does the author think of Wittock’s work?
A.It’s innovative. B.It’s wasteful. C.It’s ordinary. D.It’s expensive.

Many of the astronauts going up to space are among the smartest people on the planet.
However, a new NASA study has found a surprising effect of space travel — it may actually slow
down the human brain.
Contrary to what you might expect, researchers discovered that while space travelers orbit
the Earth, they experience some temporary mental slowdowns, including processing information
slower and difficulties with attention and memory.
Luckily, the study also finds spending months in space doesn’t permanently scramble (打
乱) an astronaut’s cognitive (认知的) abilities. Their overall brain performance remains remarkably
resilient (有适应力的).
The study examined 25 professional astronauts who spent an average of six months aboardthe International Space Station. Scientists tracked their cognitive performance through a series of
rigorous (谨慎的) tests designed to measure everything from processing speed to memory and
attention. “We show that there is no evidence of any significant cognitive impairment or
neurodegenerative decline in astronauts spending six months on the ISS,” explains Dr. Sheena Dev,
the study’s lead researcher, in a media release.
So what exactly changed? Think of it like your brain running in “low power mode”. Astronauts
completed tasks just as accurately as they would on Earth, but they took slightly longer to process
information. Processing speed, working memory, and attention were the most affected cognitive
fields — similar to how you might feel after a stressful day without enough sleep. The most
interesting but unusual finding is how quickly the brain adapts. Some performance changes, like
slower attention spans, were only noticeable early in the mission. Others, like reduced processing
speed, took a bit longer to return to normal after the astronauts returned to Earth.
These insights are more than just scientific curiosity. As humanity looks toward ambitious
missions to the Moon and Mars, understanding how the human brain responds to extreme
environments becomes crucial. This research provides a baseline for future space explorers, helping
mission planners predict and reduce potential cognitive challenges.
32.How may astronauts perform during space travel?
A.They take longer to respond to the tasks.B.They complete tasks as quickly as on earth.
C.Their cognitive abilities are damaged heavily.D.They spend years recovering their
physical health
33.What does the underlined word “impairment” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Improvement. B.Damage. C.Development. D.Change.
34.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Astronauts’ cognitive abilities remain stable wherever they are.
B.Astronauts’ performance in space is much worse than that on Earth.
C.Astronauts’ attention spans were always slower in the space.
D.Astronauts’ brain performance can return to normal later
35.What does the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The later plans for space missions. B.The development of cognitive study.
C.The significance of the study. D.The future of space exploration.

67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my husband asked me what I wanted for the coming festival, I replied, “The Famous
Five series.” His first response was, “What’s that?” I had to explain. He knew there was loss and
sadness associated with moving so many times, and that I’d lost some material things along the way.
What I hadn’t explained quite yet was my desire to connect with my past through the books I’d
enjoyed as a child.
During our elementary school years in Austria, I would frequent the British bookshop in
Vienna. During those visits, I acquired all twenty-one books in the Famous Five series by the British
author Enid Blyton. I enjoyed reading about the adventures of the “Five”, which included siblings
(兄妹)Julian, Dick, and Anne as well as their cousin Georgina and her dog Timmy. The stories
feature funny plots centering on catching bad people—quite extraordinary, considering the heroes
were mere teenagers! The books were my passports to adventures I’d never experienced in my own
life.
Unfortunately, my family had to move to the United States quite abruptly due to a health
emergency. My parents had to make difficult decisions about what to bring to America. Since books
were heavy, my parents were unable to bring most of my books with them, including the FamousFive series. I was heartbroken!
Fast forward to seven years into my marriage, some seventeen years after I’d left my treasured
Famous Five series behind, I decided I wanted to acquire my books for a holiday. I’d been searching
the Internet for the series but got disappointed, because no American book publishers or websites
had the books. We could have bought them on a foreign website, but we were nervous about using
our credit card that way.
The festival eventually arrived and my husband, daughter, and I sat around the table. We
traditionally opened one present and each of us picked a gift. My daughter opened hers first, and
then my husband. I eyed my chosen present, a colorfully wrapped box, and guessed what it might
be. “An elephant?” my daughter smiled. “Oh, let’s end the suspense!” I said and began tearing the
wrapping.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
