As a mushroom scientist, you are vastly outnumbered, with estimates suggesting that there are between 2.2 million
and 3.8 million species of fungi (真菌), the majority of which are yet to be identified. However, professionals in the field
are not alone in their efforts to uncover new species. An enthusiastic community of amateurs has emerged, bridging the gap
between professionals and non-professionals. These amateurs have even made significant discoveries. One such amateur is
Taylor Lockwood, a 74-year-old mushroom enthusiast and professional photographer.
In 1984, while living on the Mendocino coast of California, Taylor Lockwood developed a fascination with
mushrooms. “Outside my cottage were these amazing mushrooms,” he says. “And it was as if these mushrooms looked at
me and said, ‘Taylor, go out and tell the world how pretty we are.’” Lockwood answered their call and purchased camera
equipment to capture their true nature. His passion for photographing mushrooms was so intense that he would even dig
holes next to the mushrooms to get the perfect angle for his shots.
In the Monongahela National Forest, Taylor Lockwood discovered an unusual mushroom that looked like tiny fingers
wearing off-white gloves. Upon deeper investigation, fungi researcher Amy Rossman confirmed that it was a “hazel glove”
mushroom, which is a rare find. “Mushrooms are not like plants,” Rossman says. “They don’t come up at the same time
every year, and so sometimes it can be decades between when a fungus fruits.” Rossman says that’s why it’s so valuable to
have people like Taylor Lockwood searching through the forest with a trained eye.
A few years ago, Taylor Lockwood realized that still photos weren’t sufficient, so he chose to create time-lapse (延时
拍摄的) videos of mushrooms. “When I do time-lapse, I see so much life happening around the mushrooms—insects,
worms and other small creatures interacting with them,” he says. Lockwood’s love for art is evident in his approach to
filming mushrooms over time. Although he appreciates the scientific aspect of his work, he identifies himself as an artist at
heart.
24.What can we learn about mushroom amateurs from paragraph 1?

Electronic waste, or e-waste, has reached levels that cannot be continued. More efforts are needed to take precious
metals from abandoned laptops and smartphones. Research shows that over 57 million tons of e-waste was created
worldwide in 2021 and people are frustrated about the lack of options to recycle their tech.
Building a low-carbon economy will depend on battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage. Taking
the elements from used batteries will be an environmental necessity. Lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries also contain cobalt (钴)
and copper (铜), but as mining for these metals creates poisonous pollution that can ruin the environment, so too can battery
recycling if not done properly. It’s a problem that needs to be solved quickly.
Another strong pressure in mining e-waste for recycled materials is that supplies could stop entirely. Up to 30
different elements are used in smartphones, and six of them are predicted to run out in the next century.
“Developing a circular economy where minerals used in tech devices are saved and repurposed could help us to
bypass supply chain issues in the future while also helping to reduce environmental impacts,” said RSC president Tom
Welton. “It is essential that governments and businesses urgently do more to deal with the world’s growing e-waste crisis
and ease the worry on supply chains.”
The US generates more than six million tons of e-waste each year and recycles only15 per cent. So there is a huge
need to increase and regulate recycling instead of shipping waste abroad, where it is taken apart or made into pieces,
releasing poison that can expose workers, including children, to diseases like cancer. Vast quantities are simply burned or
buried in landfill to pollute the air, soil and water.
Electronic equipment is forecast to generate nearly 75 million metric tons of e-waste annually by 2030—almost
double what was created in 2014. Less than 20per cent of global e-waste is currently recycled and that needs to change.
28.What’s the author’s attitude towards the future supplies of certain elements?
A.Concerned. B.Satisfied. C.Objective. D.Uncertain.
29.What does Tom Welton suggest?
A.Regulating local recycling. B.Boosting efforts to take metals.
C.Increasing global e-waste recycling. D.Developing a circular economy for tech minerals.
30.Why does the author mention the US e-waste in the fifth paragraph?
A.To show the focus on the problem from the government.
B.To make a further prediction about worsening problems.
C.To illustrate the seriousness of the problem.
答案第4页,共2页D.To find a solution to the problem.
31.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Mining’s environmental impact. B.Lack of recycling options for tech devices.
C.Need for a circular economy in tech devices. D.Growing e-waste crisis and supply chain effects.

A significant proportion of the American populace within the working-age demographic are encountering challenges
in meeting the financial demands associated with health care, as per a recent comprehensive evaluation.
This study, which is the inaugural edition of the Health Care Affordability Survey conducted by the Commonwealth
Fund, reveals that a substantial 51 percent of adults falling within the age bracket of 19 to 64 years have expressed that
affording health care for themselves and their family is either exceedingly challenging or moderately difficult. This
observation encompasses 43 percent of individuals who are beneficiaries of health insurance provided by their employers
and an even higher 57 percent who have secured health insurance through a marketplace or have opted for an individual
plan.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that nearly one-half of the working-age adults who are under the Medicare program and
45 percent of those who are recipients of Medicaid also admit to facing hardships in covering their health care expenses. It
is particularly striking that a majority, specifically 65 percent, of working-age adults have indicated that the escalation in the
cost of various goods and services over the past year has had a detrimental impact on their capacity or that of their family to
manage health care expenses.
The aforementioned survey, which is based on a sample that is representative of the nation and comprises nearly
7,900 individuals who are 19 years of age or older, was carried out from the mid-point of April through the month of July in
the current year. This survey follows on the heels of another analysis conducted by the research entity known as KFF, which
demonstrated an upward trend in the costs associated with health insurance for employer-sponsored plans as well as an
increase in the contributions made by workers towards these plans in the year 2023.
The newly disseminated analysis has further unearthed that 38 percent of the individuals who participated in the
survey identified cost as the primary factor that led them or a family member to either forgo or postpone the receipt of
necessary health care services or the procurement of prescribed medication within the last 12 months. This includes 29
percent of those who are under the protection of employer-based coverage, 37 percent who are insured through individual
and marketplace health plans, 42 percent who are covered by Medicare, and 39 percent who are recipients of Medicaid.
Furthermore, it is observed that more than six-tenths of the individuals who are devoid of any form of health
insurance have reported that they or a family member have had to delay or forgo medical care due to financial constraints.
Among all those who have reported such instances of skipping or delaying care, a considerable 57 percent have stated that a
health issue has consequently deteriorated.
32.How does the article present Americans’ health care payment situation?
A.By citing data. B.By giving examples.
C.By giving reasons. D.By making comparisons.
33.What leads to most working-age Americans’ difficulty in paying health care costs?
A.Their heavy debt. B.Unemployment.
C.Higher cost of living. D.Higher health care payment.
34.What may the underlined phrase in the fourth paragraph mean?

第二节(共5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As is the case with many of life’s blessings, our visual acuity is often regarded with a sense of complacency until it
commences to present us with challenges. It is only when we encounter impediments in perusing the daily publications and
begin to suffer from cephalalgias that we start to question the prudence of our nocturnal vigils spent before the luminous
screens of our computers. 36
Eat well. What you eat has a great impact on your eyes. You’d better have a balanced diet, which includes plenty of
fish and leafy green vegetables, fruits, nuts, and eggs. These contain nutrients such as vitamins C and E. 37 A
healthy diet also helps prevent obesity and diabetes, which may affect your eye health badly.
Take care of our glasses. If you have been donning ocular appliances since your formative years, it is likely that you
received instruction on their proper maintenance. However, as time has passed, you may have become somewhat remiss and
have ceased to diligently adhere to the practices of preserving the condition and functionality of your spectacles. 38
Employ a delicate, cottonen textile to meticulously cleanse the ocular lenses on a daily basis, ensuring the removal of any
surface debris and smudges. Additionally, it is prudent to submerge the spectacles in a tepid aqueous solution infused with a
mild detergent biweekly to eliminate microbial colonies that may have accumulated. When placing them in repose, ensure
that the lenses are oriented skyward to prevent any inadvertent compression that could lead to deformation or scratching.
Consistently repose them within a robust protective enclosure during periods of disuse to shield them from potential
damage.
39 You already know this one, but it bears repeating — stop staring at your computer screen or TV all
the time. You need to take short breaks every half an hour, just a minute of looking away, or closing your eyes.
Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses can make you look pretty cool. 40 Find sunglasses that are stylish and
comfortable and keep them close by at all time during summer.
A.And that’s a mistake.
B.Don’t overuse your eyes.
C.They are essential for eye health.
D.Have your eyes checked regularly.
E.Wearing fancy sunglasses is thought to be a good choice.
F.They can also protect your eyes from the glare of the sun.
G.Follow the following suggestions to keep your eyes healthy.

“Not again!” Aliya shouted angrily, looking at the marks she had attained in her maths test.
It seemed as if failing in the math test had become a part and parcel of her life. Despite her efforts, she had been
unable to perform well. Tears in her eyes, she quickly shoved (乱塞) the paper into her bag before any classmate could
make a rude comment on her.
Effortlessly, using the back of her palm, she was wiping the tears when her teacher Mrs Leena noticed her. She came
to Aliya’s desk and, in a soft voice, asked her to see her during the break time.
Wondering what it could be, Aliya waited impatiently for lunchtime. Finally, when the bell rang, she made her way to
Mrs Leena. As soon as she saw Aliya, she gestured for her to sit on the empty chair beside her.
She carefully studied her face, cleared her throat with a bright smile and said, “You seem to be anxious. I think I
know what’s bothering you. If you allow me I think together we may come up with a good solution.”
With a puzzled look, she said, “Well ma’am, you know I have been struggling in maths since the beginning of the
term. It seems as if no matter how hard I work, I am unable to get the desired result. I feel so upset,” she said sadly.
“You need not be so gloomy,” encouraged Mrs Leena. “With these three key ingredients: hard work, determination
and resilience (韧性), you will move ahead and succeed. It’s always the first step that’s difficult, but once you decide not to
look back and not give up, you will be successful, my dear. Come on, gather yourself and let’s work on it together.”
From that day onwards, Aliya worked hard, religiously following her teacher’s advice. By the time the final exams
drew close, she had thoroughly revised her math book and well-prepared.
