It was a Sunday. I was helping my, brother move from a teaching job. We were in the middle of nowhere in the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan when my truck — just died without any warning. Neither of us knew very much
about trucks. Soon, a man from the house we broke down in front of came out, took one look at the engine and said,
“The timing belt doesn’t work.”
We inquired about the closest garage and realized that it would be an expensive repair. This man, though, took
a look at the situation — two broke kids in their early 20s just trying to get by in life and he said, “Well, it’s
Sunday. Nothing’s gonna be open. I was once a repairman. Let’s push the truck down to my driveway and see what
we can do.”
So that was exactly what we did. He made some calls to get the needed parts. While the truck got fixed, this
man’s son, a kid of about 9 or 10, was hanging around. There were no kids nearby his age, and he was eager for any
kind of interaction, even with two guys in their 20s. He said, “Want to see my treehouse?”, pointing to the woods
out back. My brother and I looked at each other, shrugged, and replied, “Sure.”
We ended up spending two hours with this kid, helping him build his treehouse. When we were done, we went
back to the house and the truck was all fixed. My brother and I had maybe $60 in cash on us and tried to pay the
man but he refused, “No, You don’t need to pay me. The next time you see someone in need of help and you have
the means, I want you to repay this favor. Plus, you kept my son occupied for several hours, which I truly
appreciate.”
And that is one of the rules of life I live by, taught to me by a generous man in the middle of nowhere who
helped me out when I was in a time of need.

The 20-minute rule is very simple. Next time you fear to do something, set a timer for 20 minutes, and start
working on whatever it is you’ve been putting off. It doesn’t matter if you’re slow at first, the important thing is
that you work on your task for just 20 minutes.
When the timer goes off, reset it and take a 20-minute break to focus on a different task or do something else
you’re more interested in: When that timer goes off, reset it again and go back to work on your original task.
,
After a few turns of this you’ll find you’ve built up strength and can keep working on the task you so feared.
In fact, you may discover that you’ve done the thing completely!
The reality is that procrastination (拖延症) actually originates from fear and the expectation of-pain. This is
usually a fear of failure or of-not meeting our own standards. Somehow, we manage to link a lot of pain to the
action we know we should take. The expectation of pain keeps us from acting, and we fail to even get started.
The 20-minute rule is designed to help you begin working through the process of developing new emotions in
connection to a task. Because the thing is, the 20-minute rule is not actually meant to get the job done at all. It’s
meant to help you get started. The “getting it done” part will just be a happy accident if you use the 20-minute rule
enough.
What’s important, is to prove, to your brain that you can work on something for 20 minutes without feeling the
pain you were so fearfully expecting. By showing yourself that everything will be fine if you just do the thing, you
help start to relieve your own fears.
Whatever you fear, you don’t have to do it all at once. Just set a timer, and get started.
8. What really matters if one follows “the 20-minute rule”?
A. Setting a timer for 20 minutes.
B. Taking a break at the proper time.
第3页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. Concerning about the progress of the task.
D. Dealing with the task for simply 20 minutes.
9. What causes procrastination according to paragraph 4?
A. Lack of interest in the task. B. Anxiety about the expected pain.
C. Not enough time management skills. D. The need for perfection and effective plan.
10. How does the 20-minute rule help in overcoming procrastination?
A. It helps you start working on the task.
B. It ensures you meet your own standards.
C. It allows you to complete the task quickly.
D. It helps you develop a new connection to the task.
11. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Good mood will turn you around. B. Success is the reward of hard work.
C. It is the first step that is troublesome. D. Cross the bridge when you come to it.
D
With the striking of heatwave, you probably have a favourite way to keep cool in hot weather — perhaps
having a cold drink, going for a swim, moving to a shady spot, or just staying indoors with air conditioning.
However, did you know that paint on a building could also help you to beat the heat?
In a recent study conducted in Singapore, researchers painted the roofs and walls of two buildings. The team
made use of a special paint containing a material that reflects the sun’s heat. Another pair of buildings were not
painted so that the researchers could make a comparison afterwards.
The paint works by reducing the amount of heat that buildings absorb, because the heat is reflected away
instead. Meanwhile, absorbed heat is released (释放) later, warming up the inner parts of a building and the
surrounding area.
Over two months, the researchers measured the conditions in the two areas. They found that the special paint
had a big impact. At the hottest time of the day — around 4 pm — the street with the buildings coated in the paint
was as much as 1.5℃ cooler than the street without the paint. Over a 24-hour period, 30% less heat was released
from the buildings in the painted area.
Professor Ng Bing Feng, who worked on the study, said the findings show that paint “can be a promising way
to make urban (城市的) areas cooler and more comfortable”. The scientists who conducted the study hope it could
reduce the need for indoor air conditioning, which uses a lot of energy.
Therefore, the potential of reflective paint to cool urban areas is an exciting prospect that could have
significant benefits for both the environment and human health. With further research and development, this
第4页/共12页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司technology could become a valuable tool in the fight against climate change and urban overheating.
12. Why did the researchers coat the buildings with a special paint?
A. To compare the color of roofs and walls. B. To test the reflective features of the paint.
C. To protect the buildings from sun damage. D. To measure the sun’s heat released from buildings.
13. How did the researcher conduct the study in Singapore?
A. By giving reasons. B. By making contrasts.
C. By using illustrations. D. By providing examples.
14. What is Professor Ng Bing Feng’s attitude towards the paint?
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
15. What does the author suggest for further research and development?
A. Studying the negative effects of reflective paint.
B. Exploring the cooling potential of reflective paint.
C. Reducing the use of reflective paint in urban areas.
D. Developing cheaper alternatives to reflective paints.

When it comes to the role model in our campus, it’s nobody but Lily. Lily is my friend, who is strong and
independent. She was born in a poor family. What makes matter worse is that she suffered from a disease in Senior
One. Because the doctor advised her to rest at home, she had to ask a three-months’ leave from school. During that
time, she not only fought against the disease but kept on studying.
Whenever facing the difficulty, she never gives up. Life is not easy for Lily, but she still loves life. She is always an
example for everyone to follow.
