Milan Kundera, one of the biggest names in European literature in recent decades, has died in Paris
aged 94 after a lengthy illness.
Born in 1929 into a Czech(捷克) family, he studied l music with his father, who was a piano teacher
and a student of the composer Janacek, and ensured Kundera received music a training at an advanced
level. Kundera studied in Prague, becoming a lecturer in world literature. He joined the ruling Communist
Party and initially he was an enthusiastic member. But his writing soon got him into political trouble. His
first novel The Joke—a black comedy published in 1967—led to aba non his writing in Czechoslovakia. In
1970 he was asked to leave the party after expressing support for the Prague Spring movement, the period
of political movement crushed by the 1968 Soviet attack. Kundera’s political action led to his dismissal from
his teaching post and his novels were removed from public libraries, and the sale of his work was banned
until the fall of the Communist government in 1989.
For a short time he performed as jazz trumpeter, before emigrating to France in 1975 with his wife
Vera, settling first in Rennes then Paris. He became a French citizen in 1981, two years after he was
stripped of his Czech nationality, and eventually wrote in French. He soon secured a reputation as a ground-
breaking author with The Unbearable Lightness of Being. The book was adapted for the screen in 1987. “It
seems to me that all over the world people nowadays prefer to judge rather than to understand, to answer rather
than to ask,” he shared his impression of the adaptation with his friend and writer Philip Roth in The New York
Times after watching it. “So that the voice of the novel can hardly be heard over the noisy foolishness of
human certainties.”
In 1985 he received the Jerusalem Prize—a prize given to writers whose works have dealt with themes of
human freedom in society. And while he was a frequent competitor for the Nobel Prize for literature, the
award remained distant.

Two and a half millennia ago, Socrates complained that writing would harm students. Socrates did not
have peer-reviewed science to make his case about the usefulness of learning concepts by heart.
Today a different debate is raging about the dangers of another technology-computers and the typing
people do on them. As primary-school pupils and PhD hopefuls return for a new school year, many will do
so with a greater-than-ever reliance on computers to take notes and write papers. Some parents of younger students
are dismayed that their children are not just encouraged but required to take laptops to class.
A line of research shows the benefits of an “innovation” ahead of computers: handwriting. Studies
have found that writing on paper can improve everything from recalling a random series of words to
imparting a better conceptual grasp of complicated ideas.
Handwriting—which takes longer for nearly all university-level students—forces note-takers to synthesize ideas
into their own words. This aids conceptual understanding at the moment of writing. But those taking notes by hand also
perform better on tests when students are later able to study from their notes. The effect even persisted when the
students who typed were explicitly instructed to rephrase the material in their own words. The instruction was
“completely ineffective” at reducing verbatim(逐字逐句地)note-taking, the researchers note: they did not
understand the material so much as parrot it.
Many studies have confirmed handwriting’s benefits, and policymakers have taken note. However,
several school systems in America have gone so far as to ban most laptops. This is too extreme. Some
students have disabilities that make handwriting especially hard. Nearly all will eventually need typing skills.
And typing can improve the quality of writing: being able to get ideas down quickly, before they are
forgotten, can obviously be beneficial.
Virginia Berninger, professor of psychology at the University of Washington, is a longtime advocate of
handwriting. But she is not a purist. Since students spend more time on devices as they age, she argues for
occasional “tuning up” of handwriting in later school years.

Army ants make a habit of killing organisms, often much larger than themselves, breaking them into
pieces and dragging them back to their bases. They don’t eat everything. Waste full with discarded bits of
prey is a feature of army ant bases. But little is known about which animals make use of army ant leavings.
As recounted in a paper in Ecology &. Evolution, Christoph von Beer en at the Technical University of
Darmstadt and Daniel Kronauer at the Rockefeller University in New York, went to the rainforests of Costa Rica to
find out. They found an entire ecosystem thriving among the leftovers.
Monitoring tiny insects in a rainforest is tricky. But the researchers hoped modern DNA analysis
techniques might make the job manageable. Working with a team of colleagues, they followed ant trails
back to their bases, finding 34 sites in total.
The researchers used a handheld vacuum cleaner to suck up all the bugs at waste and brought the
samples back to a field laboratory. To keep the task manageable, the team confined themselves to examining
only the beetles they had collected. They identified the beetles they could and ran DNA analyses on those they
could not.
In total, they collected 8.364 adult beetles, 511 beetle larvae and 24 beetle eggs. Those were spread
across 91 species, several of which were entirely new to science. Aside from that being far more than
anyone had expected, the presence of the larvae and eggs indicates that the leftovers are not so much
convenient restaurants as full-on homes, where the beetles live out their entire lives.
Precisely how these species manage to avoid being eaten themselves by their army-ant hosts remains to
be determined. Dr. von Beer en speculates that a hygiene instinct that keeps the ants from eating material
that has been taken to their waste is partially responsible. And many species of beetles are able to produce
compounds that smell disgusting to ants. The chances are high that among these insects are some predators
too, seeking to feed on unsuspecting scavengers(食腐动物) in turn.

Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn
enough money to buy a new pair of boots—boots with no cardboard in the soles. They were ten-inch, Top-

The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to
catch the bus into town. But on the way to the bus stop I noticed da house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was
then I realized that we had no lights, no decorations and no Christmas goodies. I also knew we would have no
turkey or ham for Christmas dinner. But at least there would be French toast.
