If you think English means endless new words , difficult grammar and sometimes strange
pronunciation , you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to
learn a second language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase
in your brainpower. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area
of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles .
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team
led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke
English. They were compared with a group of " early bilinguals " who had learned a second language
before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners .
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new
language , the smaller
the difference.
" Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a
second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between
bilingualism and maths skills. "Mastering two languages gives you two windows on the world
and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),"he said. "You are actually going beyond language
and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a
second language between the ages of two and thirty-four.Reading, writing, and comprehension were all
tested. The results showed that the earlier they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means
you get an entrance to another world, "explained the scientists.
4. Why does the author mention "exercise" in the second paragraph?
A. To say language learning is also a kind of physical labor.
B. To make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well.
C. To prove that one needs more practice when learning a language.
D. To show the importance of learning a foreign language.
5. What does the underlined word " bilinguals "probably mean?
A. Researchers on language learning.
B. Native English speakers.
C. People who can speak two languages.
D. Active language learners.
6. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A. Learning a second language is the same as studying maths.
B. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language.
C. You'd better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language.
D. Early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects.

It was my first day of sixth grade. I looked at my schedule and saw that I had Mrs. Foxwell's
classes and this made me happy . Over the next three years , Mrs . Foxwell taught me many important
things that I will never forget . Of all of the teachers and coaches I have had in my life,Mrs. Foxwell has
been my favorite leader.
Mrs. Foxwell is one of the most respected people I know. She is always kind to everyone and she
treats others the way that she wants to be treated . She taught me respect in many different ways , but
mainly how to be respectful in the business world. She told me that I needed to have a firm handshake
and that I should always look people in the eye when I talked to them .
Mrs. Foxwell also taught me that I could earn someone's respect by working hard to achieve my
goals .
In addition to working at Brandywine Springs School, Mrs. Foxwell once worked at a bank as a
manager but she gave that up to teach kids how to be successful. Mrs. Foxwell told our class that she
would cry because of the amount of work she had to do in very little time. She told our class that
working all night at something we don't love is very stressful, so we should try and do something we
love. In the end, she taught me that I have to keep my head high and pull through difficulties. I don't
think I have ever worked as hard in any class as I did in her class. I created my own 28-page business
plan to share with her, my parents, other teachers and my classmates. Although creating a business from
nothing was a lot of hard work, I really enjoyed it and learned several lessons that will help me
throughout life.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂I have had a lot of role models in my life, but one of the greatest ones is Eva Foxwell. She taught

better and I desire to be like her.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Thanks to my conservative(保守的)family background,I didn't believe in angels(天使).That
is,not until Christmas Eve of 1979, when an angel brought unexpected joy to my home.
After divorce,my two daughters not only lost the safety of a whole family, they also tearfully(泪汪
汪地)left behind neighborhood friends, a familiar school, and a large house. These had all been
replaced with a narrow two-bedroom apartment in a poorer part of town .
I arranged to take my vacation during my children's winter holiday. We spent evenings planning
activities: games, a pizza night , and evening car rides to view neighborhood holiday lights .With
expectation , they seemed to be in good spirits .
The week before the school break, however, I was fired because of the company's poor
performance. By Christmas Eve, sadness covered our vacation plans. An afternoon outing did little to
improve our mood .
On returning to our apartment, we were astonished to see a beautiful,six-foot Christmas tree
propped(支撑)against our front door. In silent wonder, we looked back and forth, from the tree to one
another and around the empty street. Excitement built, and the girls begged to keep the tree.
"Maybe it's for us," my older daughter guessed.
"Yeah," repeated my younger child, "I bet an angel brought it to us!"
I laughed aloud at the idea of an angel bringing a Christmas tree to my family. Caught up in their
happiness, I announced the tree "ours".
We moved it inside and headed out to the only upermarkets in our small town open that late on
Christmas Eve. With holiday goods down to half price, I agreed to buy a tree stand(底座),two boxes of
