Unusual Things that Famous People Did
Leonardo Da Vinci And His Sleep Schedule
Da Vinci was a painter, an engineer, a writer, a sculptor, an inventor, an architect, a pioneer in exploring human
anatomy, an eager animal lover and possibly one of the most famous vegetarians who ever lived. It seems that there’s
nothing that this man did not do. Yet there was, it was sleeping. He wasn’t a fan of it and after conducting careful
research and building up his knowledge, he started following the multiphase sleep cycle. To put it in other words, Da
Vinci’s sleep would consist of several short naps every 24 hours. Being The Renaissance man is not so easy.
Leo Tolstoy And His Shoes
The giant of the Russian literature, Lev Tolstoy not only wrote historically accurate books, but he himself became
of historical importance while still being alive. Despite coming from the highest layers of society, Tolstoy eventually
started questioning the moral of society that he lived in and started following his own path. He became a vegetarian,
started following a vigorous daily routine and denounced the looks of a rich man. He started wearing peasant clothes
and shoes, which, despite not being too skilled, were made by himself.
Ludwig Van Beethoven And The 60 Coffee Beans
Ludwig van Beethoven did write the glorious “Symphony No. 9”, which is now the anthem of European Union,
while being already deaf, but, of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg of his input into musical history. Yet stellar
results require astronomic discipline. Each morning Beethoven counted by hand 60 coffee beans from which he would

pour cold water on his head.

Harry looked at the black alleyway. If only it would move, then he’d know whether it was just a stray cat or —
something else. “Lumos,” Harry muttered, and a light appeared at the end of his wand (魔杖). He held it high over
his head, and the pebble-dashed walls of number two suddenly sparkled; the garage door shone, and between them
Harry saw, quite distinctly, the giant outline of something very big, with wide, gleaming eyes.
Harry stepped backward. His legs hit his trunk and he tripped. His wand flew out of his hand as he cast out an
arm to break his fall, and he landed, hard, in the gutter (阴沟) — There was a deafening BANG, and Harry threw
up his hands to shield his eyes against a sudden blinding light — With a yell, he rolled back onto the pavement, just
in time. A second later, a gigantic pair of wheels and headlights screamed to a stop exactly where Harry had just been
lying. They belonged, as Harry saw when he raised his head, to a triple-decker (三层), violently purple bus, which
had appeared out of thin air. Gold lettering over the windshield spelled The Knight Bus.
For a second Harry wondered if he had been knocked silly by his fall. Then a conductor in a purple uniform
leapt out of the bus and began to speak loudly to the night.
“Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the isolated witch or wizard (巫师). Just stick out your
wand hand, step on board, and we can take you anywhere you want to go. My name is Stan Shunpike, and I will be

Today, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issues in the US, affecting 30% of adults. In
2021, a survey of 8,000 children led by Oxford University Press named anxiety as the Word of the Year. “It’s the
word on everyone’s lip, the challenge of the moment,” Dr. Tracy Dennis Tiwary says, a professor of psychology,
immersed in research — evaluating which mental health treatment worked and why.
The idea that anxiety is something to manage or eradicate, a habit to be broken, is wrong and actually doing us
harm. It’s literally a recipe for more anxiety. This is central message in Dennis Tiwary’s new book, Future Tense.
She concludes that the problem isn’t anxiety itself, but our belief about it and our attempts to avoid it, which are not
only destined to fail, but make us weaker and more fragile. It’s a vicious cycle.
To help reframe anxiety as an ally not an enemy, Dennis takes a deep dive into the emotion itself. Anxiety is
different to fear, which is the certainty that something bad is happening to you. Anxiety is about uncertainty; it’s the
feeling that something bad could happen, but might not. Unlike fear, anxiety contains hope. Anxiety can focus the
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂mind, drive you to revise harder, to see a doctor, to seek new pathways towards your chosen career.
Anxiety helps us forge forwards with creative solutions, but there are times when there is little we can do to
address a future uncertainty. Dennis suggests many ways of coping with it. Connecting with friends and family is a
soothing first step. Cultivating things that immerse you in the present moment is also helpful. Our emotional
systems are like immune systems. If it isn’t exposed to germs, it remains weak. It’s only by feeling our anxiety,
listening and acting on it that we cope better next time.
28. What is a common misunderstanding of anxiety?
A. Anxiety is wrong and doing us harm.
B. Anxiety is the challenge of the moment.
C. Anxiety is difficult to change, as a habit.
D. Anxiety is something to manage or eradicate.
29. What does the underlined word “vicious” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Panic. B. Complex. C. Difficult. D. Severe.
30. How does the author mainly develop the last but one paragraph?
A By giving an example. B. By making a comparison.
C. By making a definition. D. By making a suggestion.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

B. Anxiety can be Good for You.

What does it take to contain two of the biggest companies on the planet? South Korean politicians and Dutch
dating apps, apparently. They seem to be succeeding where America’s federal government has failed: to force changes
to the way Apple and Google run their app stores.
The app stores are big businesses, with combined sales last year of $133bn, three times the total five years
earlier. Apple and Google take a cut of up to 30%, which began in Apple’s iTunes music store and was copied to its
iPhone app store, launched in 2008. As people came to use their phones for gaming, streaming and much else, it
evolved into a tax on digital activity. Sign up to a service like Disney+ on your phone and Apple or Google get a cut
of your subscription (订阅) forever. Apps have had to use the tech’s own payment systems, and could not tell users
about other ways to sign up.
Last summer South Korea banned app stores from forcing developers to use a particular payment system. In
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂December Dutch regulators made a similar ruling against Apple, after a complaint by developers of dating apps. On
March 23rd the trend went global.
A bigger threat comes from the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), approved in draft form on March 24th. The
DMA, which is on track to come into force next year, would force mobile platforms to allow third-party app stores
and “sideloading” (旁加载) of apps directly from the web — something Google permits but Apple does not. Offenders
face fines of up to 20% of worldwide revenue and bans on acquisitions (收购).
Apple’s boss, Tim Cook, has warned that sideloading would “destroy the security of the iPhone”. That is a bit
much: Apple allows sideloading on its desktop computers without damage. But Apple’s much bigger share of the
mobile market could make the iPhone a juicier target for malware (恶意软件). And the company trades heavily on
privacy and security.
32. How can Apple and Google manage their app stores?
A. Get users’ subscription for free.
B. Take a 30% cut of subscription.
C. Let apps use third-party payment systems.
D. Tell users to sign up services on their app stores.
33. What will the DMA allow the app stores do in the text?
A. To approve in draft.
B. To advertise other ways to sign up.
C. To permit third-party app stores and sideloading.
D. To face fine of up to 20% of worldwide revenue.
34. Which word best describes the Apple’s attitude to sideloading on mobile platform?
A. Unfavorable. B. Tolerant. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Sideloading is safe on desktop computers and iPhone.
B. The app stores’ payment systems are about to change.
C. Apple and Google’s profits are threatened by laws and lawsuits.
D. South Korean politicians and Dutch dating apps changes Apple and Google.

The Circus
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. My family
weren’t well off at that time, we can only come to see it once a year. Finally, there was only one family between us
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could
tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing
in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly discussing about the clowns, elephants,
and other acts they would see that night.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. The
father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s
hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You’re my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling in pride, looking back at
her as if to reply, “You got that right.”
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight
children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady quoted the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to
quiver (颤抖). The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again quoted the price. That price immediately threw him into low spirits.
