Accompanied by the background sounds of Chinese traditional instruments, Yuanxi – China
Daily’s digital employee –introduced the 9,000-year-old stone carvings (岩画) from the Helan
Mountains in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region on Oct 14.
The meeting between the virtual human and Chinese traditional culture is quite interesting,”
an internet user commented on Sina Weibo.
With the rise of the metaverse (元宇宙), virtual humans have become a growing phenomenon
in China. According to a research report by QbitAI, it is estimated that the overall market size of
China’s virtual humans will reach 270 billion yuan by 2030.
Though they are not real, these virtual beings share similar identities with us and serve in
different fields of our daily lives, including education, broadcasting, and business. For example, in
June 2021, Hua Zhibing, a virtual human who can write poetry, was officially registered as a
student at Tsinghua University. Throughout the 2022 Winter Olympics, China’s first AI sign
language presenter served hearing-impaired (有听力障碍的) audiences 24/7.
Due to their perfect image and interesting setups, some virtual humans even get a large
number of fans and become idols in real life. Luo Tianyi is one of them. As a virtual singer, Luo
has over 5 million followers on Sina Weibo. When she held a concert in Shanghai in 2018, more
than 10,000 fans waved glow sticks and cheered for her. Gao Yu, a fan of Luo, told Economic
Information Daily that “just like chasing human idols, Luo’s fans also hold birthday parties for her

While the future of virtual humans seems promising, problems also lurk (隐藏着)
underneath. As the novelty wears off, some followers are getting tired of virtual humans’ never-
changing expressions. “No matter how lifelike these virtual influencers look, they’re still not real
people. It’s a little scary,” Gigi You, 23, from Guangdong, told Insider. Studies also showed that
their “perfect” face and “perfect” life which humans are unable to achieve can also trigger (引发)
anxiety and depression in individuals.
Generally speaking, virtual humans are often seen as the gateway to the metaverse and have
demonstrated financial potential, but there’s still a lot of room for development, reported Xinhua.

A 63-year-old Chinese grandpa's traditional carpentry skills are delighting tens of millions of
viewers online as he creates woodwork without glue, screws or nails.
The Chinese master carpenter, Wang Dewen, known as "Grandpa Amu" on YouTube, has
been honored as the modern day Lu Ban, a famous Chinese structural engineer during the Zhou
Dynasty, thanks to his vast carpentry knowledge. One of his videos, which shows him making a
fantastic wooden arch bridge, went viral on the platform, gaining more than 42 million views.
Grandpa Amu follows an ancient Chinese technique, which means no nails or glue are involved in
the entire process of building the arch bridge. Grandpa Amu has also made several wooden toys
for his grandson using the same technique. He created a folding stool(凳子) that looked like the
China pavilion from the 2010 Shanghai Expo. "A block of wood transforms into a stool. Genius,"
a YouTube user named Rey commented under the video.
Li Ziqi, who lives in a picturesque village of southwest China's Sichuan Province, has made a
name for herself by making various Chinese dishes on YouTube since 2016. In her videos, she
gracefully works as a farmer, impressing viewers with her understanding of food, nature and
Chinese culture while showcasing the charm of Chinese culture in every detail of daily life. Her
traditional food preparation craft and Chinese rural lifestyle have attracted 11.1 million subscribers
on YouTube. Just like Li Ziqi, Grandpa Amu is also trying to spread unique Chinese techniques to
the world.
Grandpa Amu's son and daughter-in-law now work full time on his videos, hoping that the

Magpies(喜鹊) can be found all over the world. The black and white birds can be seen flying
over the skies of China and the UK alike. These charming birds are seemingly everywhere.
While they do span(跨越) the globe, they often share the common meaning of luck in spite of
the culture everywhere they are found. In the UK, there is a poem related to what seeing a
different number of magpies is supposed to mean:
One for sorrow/ Two for joy/ Three for a girl/ Four for a boy/ Five for Silver/ Six for Gold/
Seven for a secret never to be told.
Three and four are usually interpreted as revealing the gender of a soon-to-be-born child or
possibly talking about romantic success. Five and six mean that the person is soon likely to
discover wealth. Seven means that a secret will successfully be kept away from curious ears
forever. They are all positive, except for the sighting of a single bird, which is supposed to be bad
luck. However, there is a way of removing your sorrow. By simply saluting(敬礼) the lonely bird,
you gain another dose of good luck.
There is a saying in China that goes “the singing of a magpie foretells good luck and
happiness while that of a crow bad luck and misery(喜鹊报喜，乌鸦报丧)”, meaning that
magpies are symbols of good luck, while crows are those of bad fortune.
In the UK, crows are also seen as a bad omen(征兆) by many people. In TV shows and films,
if you see a group of crows chirping(鸣叫) with their distinctive call, the intention is to introduce
an atmosphere of misery(痛苦) or death. A group of crows is also called a “murder”, bringing to

In the spring of 2013, my wife and I opened Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Opening a community-minded independent bookstore was a dream we’d shared. We were in our
late twenties, pursuing a dream.
When opening day arrived, we unlocked the door and held our breath. One by one, people
walked inside, paged through new books, and discussed favorite authors. The bookstore came
alive.
That morning, I had set out a typewriter on our lower level for anyone to use. It was a
community-building experiment: What if people could walk into a bookstore and type anything
they wanted?
The first typewriter I ever fell in love with was my grandfather’s- a 1930s Smith Corona. My
memory of him is limited to impressions: visits to his Florida apartment, beach picnics, and a
fascinating black typewriter on his writing desk. One year, long after he passed, Grandma gave me
his Smith Corona for Christmas. At the time, I was a struggling writer. Seeing his old typewriter
again stirred something in me. His typewriter made writing fun again. And for the first time since
his death, I felt connected to him, to a past I never really knew.
The typewriter I set out on opening day was a light blue Olivetti Lettera 32. I inserted a clean
piece of paper and let it be: the world’s smallest publishing house, waiting for an author. One of
the notes I found that first day was: Thank you for being here. I didn’t see the typer’s identity, so it
appeared as if the typewriter itself was thanking me. Soon, more notes accumulated. Typewriting
had become part of our bookstore’s identity.
Customers and friends began encouraging me to turn these notes into a book. At first, I was
hesitant. But then I read through the piles of messy, typewritten pages again. Some made me tear

That day, I was going to skate a clean freestyle program for the first time in a year. I

“I can make it!” I thought as I skated to the center ice. When my music sounded, I started my

depended on it. My coach, Geena, put it early in my program so I could do it while my legs were

launch into the axel. My nerves were back, working against me. “I can do this!” I thought. I
stepped into takeoff and I did… a waltz jump(半周跳). It is a jump I’d been doing since I was
pretty young. It is only one-half a rotation(旋转) instead of the one and one-half that I need for the
axel.
I glimpsed Coach Geena’s questioning eyebrow as I glided past the door and imagined the
disappointed looks on my parents’ faces. “It’s not over,” I reasoned to myself, glancing into the

However, it didn’t work out the way I’d hoped. I fell, and I kept falling. Never one to give up,

fifteen seconds of my program felt like an age. By the time I was done, my dress was soaked
through and I was seven seconds behind my music, so I finished skating to silence.
