Olly Neal grew up in Arkansas. He didn’t care much for high school. One day during his senior year, he cut class
and walked into the school library. He discovered a book written by Frank Yerby. The book was The Treasure of
Pleasant Valley and it attracted Neal’s attention. But there was one problem — if Neal took the book to the check
out counter (收银台), his friends would know he was reading books.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂“Then my fame (名誉) would be down,” Neal said. “I wanted them to know that all I could do was fight and
cuss (咒骂).” Finally, Neal decided to steal the book.
A week later, Neal had finished the book. He brought it back to the library. But when he put it back, there was
another book by Yerby. He took it as well. The same thing happened again. He read four of Yerby’s books that term
— checking out none of them.
But Neal’s sneaky action turned out not to have been so sneaky after all. Attending his 13-year high school get-
together, Neal met the school’s librarian, Mildred Grady. She saw Neal take that book. She said, “My first thought
was to call him out, and then I realized what his situation was. So I decided that if Neal was showing an interest in
books, I would find another one for him and put it in the same place where the one he had taken was.”
This was not an easy matter because Frank Yerby’s books were not especially available. But the woman’s efforts
paid off: Neal went on to attend law school and later became a great judge. When Grady died, Neal told the story and
he said, “I thank Mrs. Grady for helping me get into the habit of enjoying reading, so that I was able to go to law
school and survive.”
4. Why did Neal steal the book instead of checking it out?
A. To prove he was a skillful thief.
B. To show the book to his friends.
C. To keep being known as a troublemaker.
D. To avoid communicating with the librarian.
5. What does the underlined word “sneaky” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Secret. B. Dangerous. C. Brave. D. Illegal.
6. How did Mrs. Grady influence Neal?
A. She taught Neal how to survive.
B. She persuaded Neal to be honest.
C. She encouraged Neal to study law.
D. She helped Neal develop reading habits.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Reading changes people’s life
B. A librarian changed a boy’s life
C. A senior student became a judge
D. Frank Yerby’s books attracted a boy

Next time you’re in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their phones.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether you’re on public transport, in a cafe or simply walking
down the street.
I’m not saying that I am not an example of this, but it always amazes me how people can spend so much time
on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular.
For example, I recently visited London and travelled on the tube while I was there. Apart from the people
asleep, almost everybody else was on their phones, and because of the nature of the tube, it is difficult not to see
exactly what they are all doing. Of course, being underground it is difficult for you to get any signal, which rules
out texting or using the Internet, but there is still plenty you can use your phones for. People were playing games,
reading articles and listening to music, and I am sure that as soon as they emerged from the train station they would
start texting or calling or checking their emails.
Recently, my smartphone broke and had to be sent off to the warehouse for repair for a week or so. In the
meantime I had to use a really old, basic phone just to keep me in touch with my family and friends. All I could do
on this phone was send text messages, make calls and play one game. And I loved it. I loved being free from the
Internet, and I really didn’t mind not having constant updates about what my friends were doing or what the latest
celebrity story was. It allowed me to spend more lime taking in my surroundings.
However, I knew that as soon as I got my smartphone hack I would be one of those people once again.
Perhaps I should just go back to using the basic phone and forget my smartphone.
8. Why are you asked to look around in Paragraph 1?
A. To ensure your safety.
B. To communicate with people.
C. To count the people around you.
D. To count the number of people using the phones.
9 What were many people on the tube in London probably doing?
A. Using mobile apps.
B. Talking with each other.
C. Reading printed books.
D. Checking social network sites.
10. What did the author think of having to use his basic phone?
A. He felt great actually.
B. He found it very inconvenient.
C. He couldn’t see much difference,
D. He felt terrible at first but better later.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂11. What does the underlined part “those people” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. People without mobiles.
B. People using basic phones.
C. People using smartphones reasonably.
D. People spending a lot of time on mobiles.

With intelligent systems and new-age transit networks, life in the big cities will likely be happier and more
efficient.
After all, more than 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, according to a UN
report. The answer to making these cities more livable for so many people lies in creating “smart” cities. These cities
will use 5G networks and the “internet of things” (IoT) to make everyday life safer and more convenient. Some cities
are already using smart technology to improve the lives of residents.
But what exactly does a smart city do? In the United States cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash cans can
sense how full they are and inform cleaning workers when they need to be emptied. In Amsterdam, the Netherlands,
traffic flow and energy usage are monitored and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors (传感
器) around the city. And in Copenhagen, Denmark, a smart bike system allows riders to check on air quality and
traffic condition as they ride.
Smart cities will be interactive, allowing their residents to feel like they’re truly shaping their environment,
instead of merely existing in it. “One of the most important reasons to have a smart city is that we can actually
communicate with our environment in a way that we never have in the past,” said Mrinalini Ingram, head of a telecom
company.
“Smart cities will also allow us to save resources.” said Mrinalini Ingram.“By using sensors and 5G networks
to monitor the use of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to distribute and save these resources
more efficiently. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other air pollutants can be more closely monitored in smart cities
as well.”
Of course, it will take time and money to turn our current cities into the smart cities of the future. But as we’ve
already seen, more cities around the world are already adopting smart technology in small ways. China, for instance, is
making investments in big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to make them “smarter”. It won’t be long until even
more cities start to develop their own smart infrastructure (基础设施).
12. What calls for the development of smart cities?
A. The rapid progress in 5G networks.
B. The marked increase in world population.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. The growing number of residents living in cities.
D. The major concern over the safety of living in cities.
13. How does the author explain the way smart cities work?
A. By making a contrast.
B. By giving examples.
C. By listing figures.
D. By telling a story.
14. What can we learn from Mrinalini Ingram about smart cities?
A. Air pollution will be stopped in its track.
B. People will be better aware of environmental protection.
C. People will be able to make the most of our environment at will.
D. Resources can be saved by keeping track of how they are used.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward smart cities?
A. Indifferent. B. Critical. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.

Ways to Reduce Food Waste
While many people in poor areas suffer from a shortage of food, a large amount of food is wasted in the rest of

good, many food items are still safe to eat for many days beyond the best-before date.

I was a single mother of four children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight, but we had a roof
over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. I always told myself to be brave and strong, just for my
four children. I hoped all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children could grow up healthily. Every
New Year’s Day we drove downtown to enjoy a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of
shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all looked forward to the coming of the day. They
talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for New Year’s Day.
The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty-dollar bill and asked them to
search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a cafe waiting for my children and
enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.
Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about the day, laughing and asking each other about what
they had bought. I noticed Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough
through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars—fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that
twenty-dollar bill I had given her? I was angry. After getting home, I called her into my bedroom and closed the
door. I couldn’t hold back my anger and shouted at her, “What about the rest of the money? No one would be
convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What did you do with the rest of the money?”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
