It was February 20, 2008. Down the escalator (自动扶梯) at the airport in Atlanta, I looked back to ensure my
wheeled suitcase was secure on its own moving step. Only then did I notice the man traveling behind it, who wore a
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂square-patterned cotton shirt. The design was strikingly beautiful. “Did you purchase your shirt in Africa?” I asked.
“Yes,” he replied. “I am from Ethiopia.”
We both got off the escalator and waited to board the train to the hall for our respective flights. I have traveled
to Africa but never to Ethiopia. Yet, the name of the country jogged my memory. I thought of two phrases from my
general fund of information: Addis Ababa and Haile Selassie. By this time, we had boarded the train and continued
our conversation.
“Isn’t Addis Ababa the capital of your country?” I inquired. “That’s right. If you like to travel, now would be a
good time to visit. We are celebrating our bicentennial (二百周年),” he added with pride. I remembered the
bicentennial in the United States in 1976, so I could relate to his feelings. “We are also celebrating the beginning of
the second millennium (千禧年),” he added. This statement perplexed me. I remembered the festivities in 2000.
Hadn’t those been for the millennium?
“Is Ethiopia in the northwest of Africa?” I asked hesitantly. “No, in the middle of Africa near the east coast.” he
explained gently. I would have liked to have learned more about his country. However, we had to part. He was taking a
flight west; I was flying east. It was a brief encounter: a few facts and new information. It has inspired me to brush
up my knowledge of different countries on earth. Once I learn where each African country is again, I plan to continue
with the map of central Asia and get my “stans” straight: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and
Uzbekistan.
4. What happened at the airport?
A. A man caught the author’s eye.
B. The author boarded the wrong flight.
C. The author came across a friend of years.
D. A traveler purchased the same shirt as the author.
5. What does the underlined word “perplexed” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Worried. B. Confused. C. Amused. D. Encouraged.
6. What will the author probably do next?
A. Explore Africa and central Asia on a map.
B. Figure out the meaning of “stans”.
C. Go on a trip to Uzbekistan.
D. Take a flight west.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ethiopia: a land of my dreams
B. An unforgettable business trip

When driving, Clara-Marina Martinez makes a note of any unusual behaviour she sees on the road. She then
feeds these into machine learning algorithms (算法), a form of AI, which she is helping develop for Porsche
Engineering.
Those algorithms are intended to produce a system reliable enough for a car to drive itself. Such a fully
autonomous car known in the industry as Level 5, should be able to complete an entire journey without any intervention
from the driver, and deal with all situations on the road. But this is proving hard to achieve, and many attempts to do
so are being abandoned. Last year, for instance, Uber sold off its unit developing self-driving cars.
Autonomous vehicles are said to be not just convenient but potentially safer. However, just as people take time
to learn how to drive safely, so do machines. And machines are not quick learners. The RAND Corporation calculates
that to develop a system 20% safer than a human driver, 100 self-driving cars would have to operate 24 hours a day,
365 days a year.
Carmakers such as Porsche therefore speed up the development process using simulators (模拟器). These teach
software about dangers rarely encountered in reality. Dr Martinez and her colleagues employ “game engines” to do
this. These are used to create virtual worlds through which the software can drive. Objects in these virtual worlds are
assigned their physical characteristics (ie, buildings are hard. people are soft) so that the sensors in vehicles respond
in the appropriate way. Once the software has been trained, it is tested in real autonomous vehicles by re-creating
those situations on a test track.
How quickly all this will translate into reality remains to be seen. Both regulators and customers will need to
overcome the doubt that a software drive really can be safer than a human being.
From Porsche’s point of view, though, there is another question. Given that much of the reason for owning a
sports car is for owners to show off their driving skills, just how big a market will there be for a version where
software takes those bragging rights (炫耀的权利) away?
8. What does Clara-Marina Martinez intend to do?
A. Market Porsche cars. B. Learn to be a responsible driver.
C. Enjoy riding in a self-driving car. D. Improve the AI technology.
9. What is the problem with self-driving cars?
A. They learn as slowly as human beings. B. They have to be monitored by human drivers.
C. They need a long time to reach a certain safety level. D. They can operate for a very short period of time.
10. What are Dr Martinez and her colleagues doing?
A. Enabling software to identify road dangers. B. Fixing sensors in autonomous vehicles.
C. Re-creating road situations on a test track. D. Separating the real world from the virtual world.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂11. What worries Porsche according to the last paragraph?
A. The reliability of car software. B. The future of its sports car market.
C. The quality of self-driving cars. D. The driving skills of human beings.

Peppered moth caterpillars (桦尺蠖毛虫)live north of the equator. But if you’ve never seen one, don’t feel bad:
They’re experts at blending in (融为一体). Each caterpillar looks like the branch it stays on, straightening its body
into a stick-like shape. It also changes its color to match the branch’s color, whether white, green or brown.
According to a paper published in Communications Biology, the caterpillars sense the color of their surroundings
not only with their eyes but also with their skin.
Ilik Saccheri, an author of the paper, normally studies the adult moth. This requires keeping a lot of caterpillars
around. Years of observation awakened his curiosity about their color-changing abilities. Each caterpillar hatches tiny
and black, and in its early days is blown around by the wind. Once it falls on a plant, it must disguise itself to avoid
being spotted by birds.
“I was a bit disbelieving that they could change that only using their eyes,” Dr. Saccheri said.
Amy Eacock, a graduate student in Dr. Saccheri’s lab decided to investigate. First, she tested the caterpillars’
eyes for light-sensitive proteins called opsins (视蛋白). “We did the skin as kind of a negative control,” said Dr.
Eacock. “But then we found they were expressed in the skin as highly as they were in the head.”
That’s when she suggested blindfolding the caterpillars. The researchers could cover their eyes, place them on
different-colored dowels (木钉) , and see if they still changed to match.
“I thought it was kind of a crazy idea,” Dr. Saccheri said. The blindfolding itself was a difficult task, involving
black paint, a tiny paintbrush, a microscope and lots of patience, Dr. Eacock said. Caterpillars molt (蜕皮) several
times over their lives, which required that they be blindfolded again frequently.
But Dr. Eacock persisted, eventually testing more than 300 caterpillars. Over and over again, the blindfolded
caterpillars successfully changed color to blend in.
Many questions remain, but the behavior alone impressed the researchers. Dr. Eacock said, “I remember turning
to Ilik one day and saying, ‘You know what? The caterpillars are cooler than the moths.’” “Yes. They’re pretty
amazing,” Dr. Saccheri agreed.
12. What can we learn about peppered moth caterpillars?
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A. They feed on fresh tree branches.
B. They can be found easily across the world.
C. They can adapt to different environments.
D. They change their body color to match living conditions.
13. Which of the following inspired Dr. Eacock to cover the caterpillars’ eyes?
A. Caterpillars have a fear of height.
B. There are opsins in caterpillars’ skin.
C. Caterpillars molt several times in their life.
D. There is something strange in caterpillars’ eyes.
14. What did Dr. Saccheri think of Dr. Eacock’s study?
A. It was hard to operate.
B. It was well designed.
C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.
D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To solve a mystery. B. To introduce a new species.
C. To present a scientific study. D. To awaken readers’ curiosity.

Over the past years, countless studies conducted have shown the positive effects that laughing has on one’s
physical and mental health. Are you ready to laugh more? Below you’ll find five ways to bring more laughter into
your life.
Smile more. Smiling is not laughing. ____16____ When you smile, happy changes begin to take place naturally,
both internally and externally. In addition, you can think of smiling as a warm-up for laughing.
Learn to laugh at yourself. Most of us take ourselves too seriously. ____17____ Learning to laugh at yourself
takes some of the pressure off. You can look for the funny side of things. When you’re upset about something, ask
yourself “How is this situation funny?” Humor can even turn a negative into a positive.
Share stories from the past. Do you remember one time in high school that you and your best friend wore false
hair and matching clothes around your neighborhood? Or, how about when your best friend sat on a painted bench
by accident? ____18____
Take up something new. When you try something new — whether it’s to draw or learn to roller skate — your
original attempts will likely be clumsy (笨拙的) and even ridiculous (荒谬的). ____19____ So taking up something
new is likely to result in laughs.
____20____ We are heavily influenced by the people we are with, so by hanging out with funny people, we can
add more laughter into our days. That positive and silly energy will immediately rub off on (感染) us and it can cause

项“It has a lot of benefits.(它有很多好处)”符合文意。故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据本段首句“Learn to laugh at yourself.(学会自嘲)”可知,本段主要讲述不要对自己太严厉,再根据前文
“Most of us take ourselves too seriously.(我们大多数人都太把自己当回事了)”以及后文“Learning to laugh
at yourself takes some of the pressure off.(学会自嘲可以减轻一些压力)”可知,空处应该是对前句的进一步解

influenced by the people we are with, so by hanging out with funny people, we can add more laughter into our
days. That positive and silly energy will immediately rub off on us and it can cause us to want to feel happier
and sillier throughout our days.(和我们在一起的人对我们的影响很大,所以和有趣的人一起出去玩,我们可
以给我们的生活增添更多的笑声。这种积极和愚蠢的能量会立即影响到我们,让我们每天都想要更快乐、

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Kelsey was grateful for everything her mother had done for her. In spite of being raised by her mother alone,
Kelsey received a good education, and now held a leading position in a large company.
Recently the company was making corporate brochures in which achievers would share their success and thank
their parents as well. For this, the achievers would have to take photos of themselves with their parents.
Kelsey didn’t really want that because her mother had put on a lot of weight due to a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle.
Kelsey managed to contact one of the best photographers and made a reservation in advance. When she and her
mother came to the photographer’s studio, Kelsey took the man aside and said, “Please make sure my mom looks
thinner in the photo.” But the photographer said what her mother really needed was a diet or exercise, not a
photographer.
Kelsey insisted that he shouldn’t make her mother look like a slim dancer. She just expected him to do his best
to make her mother look a bit thinner. The photographer finally agreed and took measures to hide some details, setting
the right light and choosing better angles for shots. But it was not easy to fool the camera.
Kelsey’s mother noticed how the photographer was having a hard time and how her daughter was shaking her
head. She smiled and said that she just wanted photos with Kelsey no matter whether she looked heavy or not.
The next day, Kelsey came to pick up the photos with her mother. The photographer printed out several photos,
copied the rest on a flash drive (闪存盘) and handed them to Kelsey. Kelsey was disappointed and complained. How
she wished her mother could look much thinner! The photographer shrugged (耸肩) helplessly and said nothing.
Kelsey’s mother, however, said that the photographer did a good job and she was who she was. Then she told Kelsey to
accept the fact that her mother was not “the tiny girl Thumbelina in the fairy tale.”

【答案】Finishing her words, Kelsey’s mother turned and went out of the studio. Kelsey quickly followed her.
After a few minutes’ silent walking, Kelsey’s mother stopped and looked straight at her daughter. “I know your
feelings,” her mother said. “You are ashamed that people will find such a beautiful and successful Kelsey has such a
fat mother. The fact is that I had no time to look after myself when I had to work two jobs to pay for your education. I’
m sorry for not being perfect.”
Kelsey felt so ashamed that she came near to tears. She hugged her mother and asked for her mother’s
forgiveness. She admitted that her mother was the best and greatest woman in the world. Later Kelsey submitted the
photos and proudly told almost everyone who saw the photos that she was grateful to this great woman for giving her
a happy life. Time and life are not always on our parents’ side. Being ashamed of their appearance is one of the silliest
things. So love our parents and appreciate their devotion.
