Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the more wonderful thing in the world. Years later, during her final illness, mother kept different things for my sister and brother. “But the desk,” she’d said again, “it’s for Elizabeth.” I never saw her angry, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was “too emotional(易动感情的)”. But she lived “on the surface”. As years passed I had my own family. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive me. I posted the letter and waited for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest and, finally, peace— it seemed that nothing happened. I couldn’t be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop trying to make her into someone she was not. Now the present of her desk told, as she’d never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work. I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside —a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded and refolded many times. Give me an answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that speaks louder than words. 4. The passage shows that ______. My mother’s Desk D. Talks between Mother and Me C Scientists have discovered that rats have adapted to modern human life, even adapting their diets to the cities they live in. The scientists claim that it could be possible that humans and rats have had similar changes in their genetic make-up, due to modern city life. The downside of the changes in the DNA is that they could make rats susceptible to the same health problems as humans, such as pollutants and sugary foods. The study showed that rats’ diets have also adapted to their environment. In New York, you can see them eat bagels and beer; in Paris, they like croissants and butter. They adapt in amazing ways. The scientists also analyzed the genomes (基因组)of 29 New York rats and compared them with those of nine brown rats from Heilongjiang Province, north-east China. The finding showed that dozens of rat genes had been through major DNA changes over the centuries, as the rats spread from Asia to Europe and America, and from the countryside and into cities. The changed genes were associated with diet, behavior, and movement, which added pressures and challenges for the rat to overcome. This could reflect the fact that urban rats have to move through highly artificial environments that are very different from natural habitats. So these gene changes might have evolved to help them move more easily through underground channels and pipes. As the rats are closely associated with city-living humans, the scientists believe that it is possible that similar changes have happened in both species. In October 2019, scientists used rats to successfully test an enzyme(酶) that could be used to help people quit smoking. Two groups of rats were trained to self-administer nicotine, and over two weeks their nicotine intakes 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂increased, suggesting addiction. Then, one group of rats was given the enzyme, which led to a decreased nicotine intake. The scientists say that the enzyme could be developed for human use in the future. 8. What is the purpose of testing an enzyme on rats? A. To explore rats’ survival ability. B. To help people stop smoking. C. To learn more about city rats. D. To tell apart nicotine and enzyme. 11. What is the best title of this text? A. Rats Have Adapted to Modern Human Life B. Rats in the City Have Varieties of Diets C. Rats Are More Adaptable than Humans D. Rats Have the Same Genetic Make-up to Humans D It is quite apparent that competition surrounds every aspect of human life whether in the United States or the Amazon rainforest. Without it we would not have grown into primates (灵长类动物) . Or we would probably still be struggling to sharpen a bronze tool while crawling around on four legs in search of meat. Without competition, Columbus wouldn’t have discovered America and Edison would never have invented the light bulb. Friendship, like all relationships between two people, involves competition. It isn’t competition in a traditional sense because there are no goals to be scored and no prize. Perhaps the ecological definition --- the simultaneous (同时) demand by two or more organisms for limited environmental resources, such as nutrients, living space, or light --- better explains it. As in nature, high school life is governed by a set of laws, similar to a shortened version of Darwin’s theory of evolution, overpopulation, and competition. There is an abundance of high school students and to distinguish them, ranking and categorizing (分类) take place. In high school, friendships learn to coexist with competition even though at times the relationship is rough. In fact, in some circumstance, competition is too much of a burden for a friendship to bear, causing it to fall apart. College admission is the final high school objective. Four years of hard 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂work is to achieve good grades, and a student’s fate is determined not only by these achievements, but by the records of thousands of other seniors trying to achieve a similar recognition. Nevertheless, by necessity, competition between students exists in all aspects of high school life. It sets and improves the standards in everything from sports to schoolwork. A healthy, friendly competition can have only benefits, but when it becomes too fierce, jealousy (妒忌) can tear friendships apart. Yet, despite all this, without competition, we would be lost. 12. What does the ecological definition mainly explain? A. How to win the competition. B. How friends compete with each other. C. What competition exactly is. D. What the result of competition is. 13. According to the writer, we can infer that high school students compete is because_____. A. they know the laws of nature well. B. they are divided into different groups. C. friendship is a burden for them. D. the number of them is too large. 14. Which best describes the relationship of friendship and competition? A. Friendship is always based on competition. B. The degree of competition is vital to friendship. C. Competition is a result of lost friendship. D. Competition is terribly harmful to friendships. 15. What does the author think of “competition”? A. The result of competition are out of control. B. Competition becomes fierce in high school. C. Competition is certain to happen at school. D. Friendship is not as important as competition at school. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 You wear your mask to minimize your risk of Covid-19.
