Here are some works of writers who got famous by just one book.
The Picture of Dorian Gray
It was written in just 3 weeks and released in 1890 in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine and it brought an
enormous amount of reputation to the author instantly. After the publication of the novel, a huge popular anger
erupted in society. People called it immoral and tried to ban it. But the book turned out to be the most successful
novel of the playwright Oscar Wilde.
Winnie-the-Pooh
Alan Milne was quite a famous playwright before releasing the stories about Winnie-the-Pooh. But the success
of the book became so big that all of his other works went far into the shadows. Milne didn’t like that he was
considered a children’s writer. As sad as it might sound, his works for kids turned out to be like Frankenstein’s
monster: the creature that swallowed its creator.
The Catcher in the Rye
In 1940s, Salinger gained a reputation of a skillful novelist. However, the author faced real success after he
released his novel The Catcher in the Rye in 1951. The book, written about a 17-year-old teenager, experienced
popularity and earned the love of readers all around the world. Surprisingly, the author forbade any adaptations of
the book into movies or theatrical performances.
Wuthering Heights
Unlike her sister, Charlotte, poet Emily Bront only wrote one novel. It was published in 1847 and stayed
almost unnoticed during the author’s life. The novel got universal recognition in the late 19th century and took a
strong place in English literature. The novel has been screened many times in the 20th century.

I was selfish as a teenager.I usually spent my time thinking about myself and taking care of my own needs.
I let my older brother do most of the work around the house until he left for college.I let my mom and dad worry
about our bills and problems while I read books, played, and lost myself in my own imagination. This didn't
change even when I went to college either.I studied hard but only to make my own life better. Even when I
started to explore my faith, it was only to increase my own happiness.
I married after graduation and decided to start a family.Of course, I had no idea what hard knocks reality had
in store for my selfish soul.Soon I found myself unemployed, deeply in debt, and with a new baby on the way.l
found out that life has little sympathy for spoiled people. In fact, all of the struggles I was going through were
beating the selfishness slowly out of me.
Still,I didn't give up on happiness.I knew that there must be a way to find it.I finally realized, however, that
it had to include more than just my own needs, wants, and desires. The answer began to make itself clear one
night shortly after my baby boy was born.I got a bottle and held him in my arms.As I was feeding him I looked
down and saw his big, innocent, trusting eyes.I smiled and talked to him. Then he smiled and I could feel my
heart growing, expanding with love.I felt such peace and joy.At that moment I had a hint of the truth: it is by
growing our hearts with love that we find our happiness.
Carolyn Arends wrote:"The more people you let into your heart, the bigger your heart gets. The more love
you get, the more love you have to give.It just keeps growing." So, keep loving, keep living and keep caring.
Keep growing your heart today, tomorrow, and always.

Used clothes are rather difficult to deal with. They are made from chemicals, cotton, or wool, which consume
many resources in the process of manufacturing and, if burned, they pollute the air and increase the carbon pressure
upon the environment. Therefore, it is a good thing for used clothes to be recycled in factories instead of being
disposed of in garbage cans to be incinerated or transported to landfill sites. In that sense, the companies that put
the donation boxes in communities have done something good and beneficial.
However, if they mean to recycle used clothes, they need to tell people that and label their collection boxes as
"recycle boxes" instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes". People expect their "donated"
clothes to go to the poor, not factories.
People need to be more realistic as well. Donating clothes may not bring much help to the poor. Especially, as
it takes a lot of human labor to collect the used clothes, sort them, clean and disinfect them and deliver them to less-
developed areas. Every step costs money and sometimes the total cost might even be higher than buying new
clothes in large quantities. Sometimes the poor might not need used clothing, but they cannot trade the clothes for
what they do need.
It might be a sad fact, but the most effective and efficient way of helping poor people is donating money and
letting them get what they need themselves. So, when people want to send a helping hand, they need to donate
money, instead of simply donating their used, unwanted clothes.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The donation boxes should be put more in communities.
B. Unwanted clothes can be recycled in donation boxes.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. Putting donation boxes in communities is right for companies.
D. Used clothes should be recycled in factories.
9. Why cannot the boxes in communities be called “donation boxes”?
A. The poor don’t need clothing donations any longer.
B. Recycling these used clothes needs much more money.
C. Donation boxes are intended for collecting unwanted clothes.
D. The clothes in the boxes are to be recycled at last.
10. What does the author really mean by mentioning “a sad fact”?
A. The poor cannot get help from it.
B. The factories cannot benefit from it.
C. It’s not convenient for the residents.
D. It gets the communities into trouble sometimes.
11. What’s the author’s attitude towards “donation boxes in communities”?
A. Supportive B. Disapproving
C. Indifferent D. Doubtful
D
It is a common question to ask yourself: What do you want to be when you grow up?
In the past it has generally been accepted that a person will follow one career path, but an emerging group of
people have changed this idea. By pursuing jobs across several walks, this group has come to be known as “slashers
(斜杠青年)”.
There are many reasons why this has become popular, particularly among those under the age of 30. In modern
competitive society, having multiple income streams (多种收入来源) is one of the best ways to create financial
security.
Zhao Sichen is one follower of the slasher movement. The 34-year-old is an English teacher at Tsinghua
University High School. Outside the classroom, Zhao also works as project manager in charge of education programs
at the Internet tech company NetEase.
In addition to providing a sense of job security, becoming a slasher reduces boredom and prevents becoming
burned out on (不再热衷) focusing on a single path.
According to the Guardian, “Entrepreneurs (创业者) are a typical example of a group that expects to spread
their careers across multiple areas.” Erin Albert is a typical slasher in the UK. Apart from having written books, Albert
is an assistant professor, an entrepreneur and a law student. Albert often asks his students to think about, “why they
can’t both take an immediate job offer they are not sure about as well as work toward their ‘dream’ job”.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Technology has also promoted this choice. Online tools and platforms have allowed people to pursue different
interests and career paths as they have promoted the ability to work remotely. Never has it been easier for those who
have interests in a variety of careers to pursue them at the same time. It seems that right now the sky is the limit for
those who are considering what they want to do in the future.
12. What do we know about slashers?
A. They are mostly 30 years old. B. They follow one career path.
C They change jobs frequently. D. They tend to work several jobs.
13. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the popularity of slasher movement?
A. It gives people more free time to relax.
B. It helps people gain financial security.
C. It gets people to pursue their dream.
D. It makes people feel less bored in a single job.
14. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Technology allows people to work remotely.
B. Doing more than one job might be encouraged.
C. Most people will work several jobs at the same time.
D. It has become more common for people to pursue multiple jobs.
15. What’s the best title of this passage?
A. Pursuing Your Dreams. B. Slashers in China.
C. Slashing through Jobs. D. Choosing Multiple Jobs.

How to overcome shyness
Does the thought of talking in front of people make you shy? If so, you are far from alone. Many people in the
world suffer from mild to extreme shyness and are struggling to overcome it. Remember that breaking out of that
shell doesn’t magically happen overnight. ___16___You’re on the right track by just reading this article — now
let’s keep going.
Figure out your reasons. Do you become shy in front of new audience? Or when surrounded by people you
know and admire? Try to find out the thoughts that go through your head right before the shyness hits. Chances are
that not all situations make you shy. You’re okay being around your family, right? Are they different from the
strangers around you? Of course not. ___17___
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂___18___For 99% of us, we’ve become shy when we think if we speak up or stand out, we’ll embarrass
ourselves. That’s why it’s important to focus on others. When we stop focusing on ourselves, we stop worrying
about our performance.
Practice speaking clearly to yourself. You have gotten used to hearing your own voice! Record yourself
pretending (假装) to have conversations. Sounds ridiculous (荒谬的), sure, but you’ll notice patterns, when and
why you stop, etc. At the beginning you’ll feel like an actor, but it will become an old habit.___19___
Don’t compare yourself to others. The more you compare yourself to others, the more you will feel that you
are not able to measure up (符合标准).___20___ Even if you do, do it realistically (现实地). Everyone else has his
own confidence problems, too!
A. Place your attention on others.
B. Practice makes habits, you know.
C. Take the challenge and face it bravely.
D. It is no use comparing yourself to anybody else.
E. It takes time, efforts, and of course the desire to change.
F. You just know them better and what’s more, they know you.

My great-grandfather, my grandfather and my father are farmers, and so are all my family. My father has a
fixed idea that I would become a farmer too. Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm
work, I don’t agree that I should automatically follow in my father’s footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It
was the first time I had seen an aeroplane in real life. Knowing that I had never been on board, my father’s friend
Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane. I quickly accepted his offer! When we took
off, I felt nervous but thrilled. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever
felt. I was just enjoying it. I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that

me. After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me. Therefore, I put the thought to the
back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm, I would frequently visit Tom’s airport. Gradually, I got
familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane
with fuel, how to check the engines and so on. But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go
to college to become a professional pilot.

This time I would not hide my desire any more.
