It was late on a Thursday evening in Austin, Texas, and I had just finished my shift downtown waiting tables. I
hopped into my truck and headed away from the chaos to my own personal oasis, Dan’s Depot. It was on a four-
lane road that went straight from the heart of Austin to West Texas. Once, Dan’s Depot had been outside of the city.
But with Austin’s population growing and the city’s expansion, it was swallowed up by high-rise buildings and
skyscrapers.
I’ve been familiar with Dan’s Depot since I played my first show there. Like most waiters in Austin, I’m
actually a musician. The woman who welcomes customers is Dan’s wife Maude.
I slid my truck into the last free spot and headed to the door. “How’s it going, Maude?” I asked.
“David, I just don’t know what we’re going to do,” she said. “Our contract with the landlord is up for renewal
at the end of the month, and he has doubled the rent. Even if we charged twice as much for the snacks and shows,
we could never make ends meet.”
My heart dropped. On some level, I’d been expecting to hear this news for as long as I’d been coming to Dan’s
Depot. After all, Dan’s Depot was now sandwiched between a shop selling yoga pants to people who could afford
personal trainers and a luxury furniture store where even a simple dining chair cost more than $1,000. How could
this little live music joint survive with those kinds of neighbors?
“What are you going to do with this place? Are you moving?” I asked.
She shook her head slowly. “I just don’t know. Dan and I are not as young as we used to be.”
I patted her on the shoulder and made my way to the tables near the stage. Memories sprung up in my mind.
Most of my musical ideas came to me while I was watching live shows here at Dan’s Depot. When the song ended,
I got up and went back to Maude.
“How about I run the new Dan’s Depot?” I asked her. She stared at me, surprised.
“Hear me out,” I said. “I’ve got enough money to go in with you and Dan as a third partner. I know the Texas
music scene in and out, and I can get the best new bands in here every week. We’ll move it way down South
Congress Avenue, where it’s still close enough to be accessible from downtown but the rent is more affordable. And
most importantly, this place means a lot to me.”
Maude was still staring at me silently. I began to grow uneasy. Had I offended her? I started apologizing. She
cut me off with a huge embrace. “Honey, I think that’s a fantastic idea.”
4. The underlined word “oasis” in Paragraph 1 refers to a place where the author ________.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A. parks his truck B. works full-time
C. grabs a meal at night D. finds joy and relaxation
5. Why did the author say he had long expected to hear the news Maude told him?
A. He had felt the sandwiches in Dan’s Depot were too expensive.
B. He had thought Dan’s Depot was out of tune with its surroundings.
C. He had pointed out the management of Dan’s Depot was inefficient.
D. He had suggested Dan and Maude should retire early and enjoy their lives.
6. What does the author advise Maude to do?
A. Sell Dan’s Depot to him. B. Hire him as a lead singer.
C. Find another way to run the business. D. Advertise for a third partner.
7. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The power of music B. Old traditions die hard
C. My respect for Maude D. Every end is a new beginning

Today’s journalists face modern challenges. Online media platforms are springing up. And the lowly
newspaper---and its reporters---are fighting money, tech, and distrust issues. Journalism students and teachers must
emphasize new skills to keep their profession alive.
A trustworthy press helps inform people and monitor all levels of government. That is essential to a nation. Yet
this useful establishment is growing increasingly unpopular. According to the University of North Carolina (UNC),
newsroom jobs across the Country are fewer than half what they were 10 years ago. And on many college
campuses, the news about the news is bleak too.
Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper The Daily Orange: It isn’t daily anymore. The paper
prints just three times each week. Next year, The Diamondback of the University of Maryland will be online only.
Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don’t print as many copies. And UNC’s The Daily Tar Heel
has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to make its budget.
Considering the problems in journalism, it’s surprising that the enrollment(注册人数) in college journalism
programs is up. The Daily Orange managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the layoffs and cutbacks disheartening.
“But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” he says.
But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry?” Years ago,
journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That still happens. But
today’s jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are
taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program. Several schools highlight statistics-driven
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂data journalism.
The news isn’t all bad. Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18-and 20-year-olds in
journalism and see what they want to do, I’m optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar
Heel. She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism “comes
from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.”
8. What does the underlined word “bleak” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Hopeless B. Interesting
C. Useless D. Encouraging
9. How do some universities respond to today’s journalism?
A. They reduce student enrollment.
B. They offer students specialized programs.
C. They prepare students for low-level reporter jobs.
D. They encourage students to run their own newspaper.
10. Why is Maddy Arrowood mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To show people’s positive attitudes to journalists.
B. To prove the potential of a career in journalism.
C. To show the popularity of The Daily Tar Heel.
D To prove people’s thirst for the latest news.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. What is journalism?
B. What does a journalist do?
C. Does journalism have a future?
D. Are journalists still influential today?
D
When we long live together, we quickly learn to foresee the near-term behaviors of our co-workers or family
members. Our ability to predict the actions of others makes it easier to successfully live and work together. In contrast,
even the most intelligent and advanced robots have remained inept at this sort of communication. This may be about
to change.
The study, conducted by Mechanical Engineering Professor Hod Lipson, is part of a broader effort to provide
robots with the ability to understand and predict what others want. The researchers first built a subject robot and
placed it in a playpen. They programmed the robot to seek and move towards any green circle it could see. But there
was a hidden difficulty: Sometimes the robot could see a green circle in its camera and move directly towards it. But
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂other times, the green circle would be blocked by a tall red cardboard box, in which case the robot would move
towards a different green circle, or not at all.
After “researching” its partner on screen long, the new robot was eventually able to get its partner’s goal and
path 98 out of 100 times, across varying situations. When starting the experiment, the researchers expected the robot
might learn to make predictions about the subject robot’s near-term actions. What the researchers didn’t expect,
however, was how accurately it could foresee the moves with only a few seconds of video.
“Our initial results are very exciting, showing how robots can see the world from another robot’s view,” says
Lipson. “The understanding ability of the new robot is perhaps a primitive form of sensing others’ feelings, which
we all can do.”
Meanwhile, he acknowledges there’re many moral questions. The technology will make robot more adaptable
and useful and no longer passive instruction-following machines, but when robots ca predict how humans think, they
may also learn to control or influence those thoughts.
12. What does “inept” underlined in the first paragraph mean’?
A. Careful. B. Smart. C. Active. D. Poor.
13. What is the experiment designed to find?
A. How a robot moves toward the targeted object.
B. Whether a robot can predict other robots’ goals.
C. Whether robots can work together like humans.
D. How accurately a robot foresees its partner’s moves.
14. How does the robot gain the understanding ability?
A. By communication. B. By following its camera.
C. By visual observation. D. By experiencing various tests.
15. What does Lipson think of the new robot?
A. It bears human characteristics. B. It has some kind of moral values.
C. It might replace human beings. D. It is an instruction-following machine.
