Father’s Day, a boxy bright red boat, was designed and made by Hugo Vihlen. It had no room for unnecessary
things and only very limited room for him.
Vihlen once made an 84-day crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1968. It was then the smallest boat to have
made the journey. The sailing boat April Fool was 5 feet and 11 inches long. But Tom McNally broke the world
record in 1993 by crossing the Atlantic in a boat that was 5 feet and 4.5 inches long.
In order to regain the world record, Hugo set out alone later that same year to cross the Atlantic from
Newfoundland to Falmouth. This time he was in Father’s Day, his home-built boat, which was half an inch shorter
than McNally’s.
During his crossing, Hugo had to sleep on his back with his knees bent. He woke every hour to check his
heading direction and general sailing conditions. After facing everything the Atlantic Ocean could throw at him,
and some close encounters with large ships, Hugo finally arrived in Falmouth 105 days later. He could hardly walk
and had lost 34 pounds in weight, but he had regained his record.
His reception on arrival in Falmouth was hardly a hero’s welcome. One of the waiting journalists found him a
pizza to eat while his boat was taken to a local sailing boat club. When they arrived at the sailing club for a
celebration tea, they found the club closed. He felt a pity for that. But luckily, a member of the public brought a
bottle of champagne to toast his success.
4.Why did Hugo Vihlen cross the Atlantic in his boat in 1993?
A.To test his newly built boat. B.To make Father’s Day famous.
C.To draw public attention to sailing. D.To break Tom McNally’s world record.
5.What can we learn about Hugo Vihlen’s crossing the Atlantic Ocean?
A.It took half a year. B.It was very difficult and uncomfortable.
C.It was beyond Hugo Vihlen’s expectation. D.It made Hugo Vihlen seriously injured a few times.
6.How was Hugo Vihlen’s reception on arrival in Falmouth?
A.It attracted a great deal of media attention. B.It finally turned into a simple celebration.

For British people, the word karaoke caused foggy and unpleasant memories at the office Christmas party. The
less-talent performers faced the karaoke machine instead of listeners. They totally enjoyed themselves and didn’t
care about what people thought even though it sounded like they tried singing their worst. Many people thought
such singing was more like a stupid show. But recently the sing-along activity has been popular again. Karaoke
nights have come out around the UK.
Iain Irving, the founder of Supercube, a karaoke gathering place in Edinburgh, said the COVID-19 made
karaoke totally different this time. What people used to think of karaoke had become the real past. Irving said, “It is
almost like that a suffering man had to go through, about sadness and worry in front of his friends. But karaoke is
supposed to be about relaxing oneself in music.” According to Irving, Let It Go from Frozen is the most popular
song in Supercube. And letting go is exactly what karaoke is all about. “When you sing, it does make you feel
good,” said Irving.
It’s no surprise that karaoke finds its voice again. Singing is known to be bonding (粘合). However, how long
has it been since you and your friends sat together to sing songs to your heart’s content? Social media has almost
replaced most people’s real social life. Rob Pursey, the founder of Hip Hop Karaoke, said, “Social media can
separate us a bit, but karaoke differs. I think people are looking for and they fall in love with those exciting feelings
of getting together.”
The COVID-19 has been going on for several months in the UK. Everyone is tired of the news on the Internet,
so it’s nice for people to come out to sing their favorite songs to a cheering crowd. “With boring news ruling the
headlines, we are all eager to escape, and karaoke provides it. You just feel like you’re on a different planet for a
couple of hours,” said Irving.
8.What was the British people’s attitude to the karaoke activity in the past?
A.Positive B.Negative C.Uninterested D.Doubtful
9.According to Irving, what’s the feature of people singing karaoke under the influence of the COVID-19?
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A.They intend to release feelings through karaoke.
B.They like to sing different kinds of pleasant songs.
C.They expect to find strength in songs to fight the virus.
D.They listen to others singing instead of singing together.
10.What do Rob Pursey’s words in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A.Karaoke should include various games.
B.Social media will cost people much time.
C.Social media make communication more effective.
D.Karaoke brings people the pleasure of close communication.
11.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Karaoke’s return to the UK
B.The benefits of singing karaoke
C.British people’s debate over karaoke
D.The development of karaoke in the UK

Think about all those successful people in your life that you know. How many of them build their success
overnight? How many of them didn’t care about their goals? How many of them gave up after the first failure?
Most of the people we know to be successful were very persistent and devoted to their dreams. In other words,
they work hard towards their dreams and keep trying, even if their goals aren’t easy to achieve. They didn’t give up
just because they faced barriers and problems. They might even get encouraged by them.
Persistence really matters. It can help build your character. Nothing builds your character more than
overcoming failures and problems in life. You get tougher and can handle anything life might throw at you. Each
time you win your urge to give up, you make your mind and personality a bit stronger. Each of those wins will
build your character to be healthier and to handle more stress.
When you are committed to something, you are willing to learn what it takes to be successful. You will be
required to learn new skills and solve new kinds of problems. When you are persistent about your goals, you will
have to learn new ways of doing things. Sometimes you might notice that to solve a particular problem, you need to
learn more about it. When you study more about the topic, you discover new exciting subtopics to know about. As
you think more in-depth into that problem, you will be exposed to new ideas and thoughts. Persistence is the driver
behind your ability to learn what you need to know.
When you keep building your persistence and willpower, you will face many failures. Things don’t always end
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂up as you have planned. With persistence, you will learn how to solve those problems and get back up after a
failure. You will learn that failure is not the end of the world. Life goes on, and so can you. Each time you decide to
overcome your failure, you will learn something new, and you will be a bit stronger than before. Those changes
won’t show daily, but slowly they will start to stack up. If you look back and analyze your process, you will
discover that you handle the stressful situation more efficiently, and after failures, you won’t go into despair. You
rather know how to handle each failure as you have accumulated experiences from them and handle challenging
situations.
Persistence is a basic quality to develop in life because it is closely related to personal development and
improvement. As you already know, it is not easy, but it is worthy of your effort.
12.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to________.
A.dreams B.successful men C.most of the people D.barriers and problems
13.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Persistence builds your character.
B.Persistence teaches you how to manage failures.
C.Persistence improves your skills and abilities.
D.Persistence helps you handle a stressful situation.
14.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.People with persistence seldom suffer from failures.
B.Learning new skills will make you more persistent.
C.Persistent people are easier to get out of a bad mood.
D.Successful people usually have stronger personalities.
15.The author writes the passage to__________.
A.explain the importance of being persistent
B.analyze the character of successful people
C.offer some suggestions about being persistent
D.show how to deal with problems and face failures

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder
sister, chasing(追逐)the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.
One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We
were so happy that we didn't notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the
rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder
and harder. We got into a panic, waving, and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped(滑)and fell
into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the

"Help! Help!" We cried. I could feel my body tingling(酸麻)as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to
swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that
the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in
the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn't able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart
from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.
