I am very appreciative that you have been taking good care of me in the past 18 years, making me
what I am today. I know it’s tough for you to accept my choice to apply to the universities in Peking

M: Yeah, I saw. I’m not surprised, though. It had been struggling for years. They were last seen in the
wild 19 years before the declaration was made. (11)
W: It’s sad. They were amazing creatures. They could grow up to 23 feet!
M: Really? Wow!
W: They were already at risk years ago because of overfishing and habitat loss. Then a barrier was
built across the river which prevented them from getting to the place where they laid their
eggs. That was what really killed them off. (12)
M: Sadly, many other species have stepped on the way of extinction in the last twenty years. For
example, the northern white rhino(北部白犀牛) and the baiji dolphin(白鱀豚).
W: There is also good news, though. For example, crested ibis(朱鹮), a beautiful bird, was listed as
endangered by the IUCN. (13) Luckily, through the joint efforts of China and other countries, its
wild population has been over 7000, (13) and it can be seen in many nature reserves now.

Welcome back to this week’s book review. Well, I am still reading what has become one of
my favorite books of all-time — Spider-Man Legends. (18) To be fair, this is more like a collection
of short stories and each one is related to each other. But you don’t know exactly how they’re related
until you’ve read the entire thing two or three times. I’ve read it 20 times! This new approach to
storytelling is so perfect for superhero characters. It can easily go back and forth between the pure
fantasy of a cartoon world and the raw emotions of the real world. Most importantly, we get to spend
a little more time learning about the history of the other characters besides Spiderman. (19) We
learn things about Spiderman’s family, and even some of the bad guys he meets have interesting
backgrounds. This book is great for both kids and adults because the language is so descriptive. Anyone
can see themselves swinging through the streets of New York, stopping criminals, and performing good
deeds. The level of detail in each story is amazing. It’s honestly better than any Spider-Man movie or
comic. On a sadder note, Spider-Man Legends came out just after the death of Stan Lee, the
man who created Spiderman. But I think he would be especially proud of this book. (20)
