It is known that not all heroes wear capes (披风), but Chris Van Dorn does, who has
saved dozens of animals in animal shelters. He has given these animals a second chance of
life while dressed as the Dark Knight.
Van Dorn has been a big fan of Batman and grew up watching the TV series about
animals. He also became a fan of animal rescue when his family adopted a dog named Mr.
Boots.
“While dressing like Batman is not necessary to rescue animals — anyone can be a
superhero by adopting shelter animals — it does keep the focus on saving animals, not the
man behind the cape. The dress just makes everybody happy and smile. It’s special to see
Batman walking around, and when they find out that he’s doing a good deed in the world,
they get even more excited,” Van Dorn said.
Van Dorn always wanted to be an unknown hero. “When I was first starting out, I
would sign everything ‘Bruce Wayne’ and not put my real name out there,” Van Dorn
said.
Van Dorn will spend long hours in his “Batmobile” taking four rescued animals at a
time to their new homes. He hopes to be able to buy a large truck so he can transport even
more animals. He also hopes to use his pilot’s license as a means to transport animals further
away quickly.
Now Van Dorn wants to share what he does with more people, saying, “I challenge
everyone to go to their local animal shelter because it’s a sad place, but if you can help out
第4页 共11页in any way, whether that’s to adopt a dog or just volunteer your time, then you should do
it.”
24. What made Van Dorn a fan of animal rescue?
A. The advice from his parents.
B. The experience of adopting Mr. Boots.
C. The influence from the TV series.
D. The visit to a local animal shelter.
25.Why is Van Dorn dressed as the Dark Knight?
A. To learn from Batman.
B. To show others his cool clothes.
C. To bring others happiness.
D. To make himself the focus of attention.
26. What words can best describe Van Dorn?
A. Creative and caring. B. Talented and generous.
C. Intelligent and determined. D. Independent and ambitious.
27.What does Van Dorn advise others to do in the last paragraph?
A. Share their stories. B. Get ready for challenges.
C. Take care of their pets. D. Support animal shelters.
C
“If you ask people which sense they would be most willing to give up, it would be the
olfactory (嗅觉的) system,” says Michael Leon, a neurobiologist at the University of
California. But a loss of smell has been linked to health problems such as depression and
cognitive (认知的) decline. Now a team of researchers led by Leon has successfully
boosted cognitive performance by exposing people to smells while they sleep. Twenty
participants over 60 received six months of overnight olfactory enrichment, and all
significantly improved their ability to recall lists of words compared with a control group.
The scientists are unsure about how the overnight odors (气味) may have produced this
result, but Leon notes that the neurons involved in olfaction have “direct superhighway
access” to brain regions related to memory and emotion. In participants who received the
treatment, the study authors observed physical changes in a brain structure that connects the
memory and emotional centers — a pathway that often fails to function properly as people
age.
Previous successful attempts to boost memory with odors typically relied on complex
interventions (干预措施) with many exposures a day. If the nighttime treatment proves
successful in larger trials, it promises to be a less troublesome way to achieve similar
effects, says Vidya Kamath, a neuropsychologist at the Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine, who was not involved in the recent study.
第5页 共11页Larger trials may also help answer some remaining questions. The new study used
widely available essential oils such as rose, but researchers aren’t sure if any odor would get
the same results. They don’t know how much an odor’s qualities — whether it smells good
or not to people, for example — affect the cognitive gains. It is also unclear how much
novelty plays a role, says Michat Pieniak, a psychology researcher at the University of
Wroclaw in Poland. Though the results are promising, they should be checked with more
participants, he says. Leon plans to conduct a larger study later this year — work that he
hopes will clear up any doubt.
28. What can be inferred about the olfactory system from paragraph 1?
A. It helps to improve sleep quality.
B. It is commonly underestimated.
C. It tends to decline in people over 60.
D. It causes people to experience mixed emotions.
29. What might be an advantage of the nighttime treatment over previous attempts?
A. It might be effective in larger trials.
B. It might expose people to various odors.
C. It might be less complex yet equally effective.
D. It might lead to more yet equally cheap discoveries.
30. What is Leon going to do next?
A. Build a bigger question database.
B. Carry out a larger research project.
C. Explore other uses of essential oils.
D. Remove doubts among experimental participants.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. The Nose Knows
B. Odor Clues of the Ages
C. Developments of Olfaction
D. The Olfactory Memory Differs

It’s hard not to notice that companies keep adding so-called artificial intelligence (AI)
to every type of product these days.
We’ve been here before, though. Not with AI, of course, but with every innovation that
came before it. Whenever some great new technology comes along, businesses of all types
try to integrate it into their products to make them sound more useful, or at least more
attractive to consumers.
Some of those products do prove useful and stick around. A few become essential and
push progress even further. Most, though, go out of production, and the leftover products
show up first at closeout shops, then at resale shops, and finally in garbage cans.
Each powerful new technological advance becomes a gimmick in the hands of
第6页 共11页consumer culture. People calling themselves innovators try to stay ahead of their
competitors, hoping that they’ll become millionaires by integrating cutting-edge technology
into what they sell.
This means that, at any given time, there are thousands of silly, poorly designed, and
quite stupid products with brief existences filling up the consumer space. But it also means
there’s absolutely nothing wrong with preferring a traditional clock over a smart watch, or a
printed newspaper over a news app, or a paperback book made from paper and ink. Those
products have all survived its endless cycle of “progress” and proved their value. The
cycle will continue, but there’s nothing wrong with you if you don’t want to participate.
The current trend toward all-AI all the time probably won’t begin to end until we see
the next big technological breakthrough. Of course, the next big thing— a new,
groundbreaking technology — must be integrated into everyday products. Time will
tell whether it will be programmable desks, low-cost hand-held computers, space
communication, or something else, but one thing’s for sure: Someone will use it to
create a toothbrush with more computing power than the International Space Station,
but it won’t get your teeth any whiter.
32. What does the author say about the trend of adding AI into products?
A. It is a necessary step toward progress.
B. It would create personalized demands.
C. It helps companies make more profits.
D. It would create many useless products.
33. What does the underlined word “gimmick” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. A groundbreaking invention.
B. A detailed product introduction.
C. An attention-seeking marketing strategy.
D. An overdone business competition.
34. Why does the author mention some traditional products in paragraph 5?
A. To increase their sales.
B. To defend their timeless worth.
C. To criticize technological advances.
D. To regret their gradual disappearance.
35. What can be inferred about the next big thing?
A. It will be misused by some.
B. It will be affordable for most.
C. It will make life more convenient.
D. It will drive out old-fashioned devices.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)

项为多余选项。
How to Write a Satisfying Ending for Your Novel
One of the most important novel-writing skills is knowing how to end a story.
Follow these five writing guidelines as you begin to develop how your hero’s
journey ends:
Build tension in the lead-up to the end. Before you get to the climax (高潮)
and things are looking positive for your hero, create suspense (悬念) by making it
seem like they might not succeed. 36 This last-minute suspense will make
the payoff even more satisfying.
Leave room for understanding, if your book is part of a series. For example,
in J. K. Rowling’s book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry defeats his
enemy in that book, Professor Quirrell, in the dramatic climax. But the reader
knows something bigger is on the way as long as Lord Voldemort still exists.
37
Stir up emotions. 38 Emotions make a story stick in a reader’s
memory, and that can mean the difference between a good story and a bestseller.
Make sure your ending finishes the storyline. Write a strong ending that
brings a sense of closure to the reader and ties up all loose ends in your story.
39 Thus, you can settle all of the elements you have introduced throughout
your story.
40 As you outline your story, map out your character’s journey and the
different possible ways the story could end. Your character might come full circle,
back to the normal life they knew before. You can also create a surprise ending.
Guide the plot in one direction, then abruptly change course — the reader will
suddenly see that the clues were there all along.
A. Try different endings on for size.
B. Stick to the first ending you think of.
C. The ending implies more adventures to come.
D. You need to make sure you haven’t left any plot holes.
E. When you’re deciding what ending to include, brainstorm.
F. Throw in an unexpected turn that adds challenges for your main character.
G.Whether it’s a happy ending, a sad ending, or a little of both, let your reader feel
something.

High school can be a tough time for many students, but for me, it was a time to discover
who I was and to grow. I loved science and technology, and my school had clubs for these
interests. One day, I found the robotics club and decided to join.
The club was full of students who loved to create and build things. My best friend,
Alex, was the vice president, and our teacher, Mr. Thompson, was a former engineer. We
spent hours after school working on our robots, learning to code, and joining in contests. My
parents were very supportive and encouraged me to follow my interests.
Our school participated in robotics contests every year. These contests were not just
about winning; they were about learning and teamwork. We spent weeks designing and
building our robots and programming them to perform tasks. It was a complex process that
required patience and hard work.
One year, our school decided to join in a national robotics contest. Our team, “the
RoboRaptors”, worked hard to design and build a robot named “Omega” that could perform
various tasks. We spent many weekends perfecting our design, and as the contest
approached, we felt excited and nervous. We knew this contest would be a big challenge
with teams from across the country.
The day of the contest finally arrived, and our team was ready. We had practiced and
prepared as much as we could, and now it was time to see if our hard work would pay off.
We loaded our robot into the car and drove to the contest venue, feeling both excited and
worried. But just before we left, we discovered that an important part of Omega was
missing, which could ruin our chances.
