Eva spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. One of the major headaches for her
was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four
directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a
library, a cafeteria, and a gym.
Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different
hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize
where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist.
In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the
track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than
having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to
her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car!
When Coach Pitt blew his whistle(哨子), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her
classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. ” It’s just the beginning, “she thought. “I’ll come in last for
sure. ”
Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a
mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word” mile. “Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast
on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved(拐弯).
After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. One lap turned into two, then three, then four.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he
would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn't
assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and
apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately matched
everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he
treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't mean
or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it
and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the
hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by
both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who
had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually
wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my
chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn't
sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

It was a bright and sunny day, but inside the classroom, Tom was feeling anything but cheerful. He had just
received his test results, and they were far from what he had hoped for. His heart sank as he stared at the disappointing
marks.
Tom had always been a diligent student, and this failure came as a huge blow. He couldn’t understand how he
had performed so poorly when he had put in so much effort. He felt defeated and wondered if he was just not good
enough.
As he walked home, he couldn’t help but think about what had gone wrong. He replayed the moments leading
up to the test, trying to figure out where he had made mistakes. Maybe he hadn’t studied the right way? Or perhaps
he had been too nervous during the exam?
When he got home, Tom decided to talk to his elder brother, Jack. Jack was always wise and had a way of
making things seem better. Tom poured out his heart, telling Jack about his failure and how discouraged he felt.
Jack listened patiently and then said, “Tom, failure is not the end. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow. Every
great success story is filled with failures along the way. Figure out what you need to do differently next time. Analyzeyour mistakes and use them as stepping stones to improve.”
Tom took his brother’s words to heart. He spent the next few days going over his test, identifying his weak
areas and making a plan to address them. He started studying with a new approach, asking for help when he needed
it and practicing more.
A few weeks later, another test was announced. Tom was nervous but also determined. As he sat down to take
the test, he took a deep breath and reminded himself of what he had learned from his previous failure. Just as Tom
was finishing up the test, the teacher announced that time was up.

Standing at the door of the classroom, I’m about to start the first lesson of my career. I feel excited and a bit
nervous. I decide to follow the teaching methods of the outstanding teachers. As the thought rings in my head, one
teacher in particular shines brightly in my memory.
I was seated in my 5th grade classroom one day, waiting for the arrival of a supply teacher. Supply teacherswere usually someone who filled in the gap, barely scratching the surface (浅尝辄止) of our daily lessons. But this
day was different. From the moment the supply teacher Mr. Laurance walked in, there was something about him
that awakened curiosity and hope among us. He wasn’t there just to pass the time; he seemed genuinely interested in
our learning and well-being.
Mr. Laurance introduced himself with a warm, welcoming smile that lit up the room. Instead of diving straight
into the lessons, he took a moment to connect with us, asking about our interests and how we felt about the subjects
we were learning. This was new; he was treating us as if we mattered, as if our opinions and feelings were
important.
As the day progressed, he taught with passion and enthusiasm. He made the subjects come alive, relating
them to real-life examples that we could understand and find interesting. He praised our efforts, no matter how
small, and offered encouragement and guidance when we struggled. It was exciting to feel seen and supported in a
classroom setting. As the day drew to a close, I found myself eager to express my appreciation in a meaningful
manner.
With the help of colored pencils, I created a heartfelt piece of art on a card, drawing the classroom full of
eager learners under his guidance. Besides, I wrote a message “Thank you for making learning an adventure today”.
Carefully, I folded the card and with a mixture of eagerness and shyness, I presented it to him.

The day after school, Mom asked what part I got in the tryouts (选拔). I told her Kristie got Cinderella’s
(灰姑娘) part but I, Mary, got none. I ran to my room and started drawing. Drawing always makes me feel better.
The next day, Kristie was excited. But when the last bell rang, she became nervous (紧张的). She asked
whether I could stay with her. I wanted to say no, but then I realized I couldn’t leave yet. My parents had signed me
up for the late bus because I thought I’d be in the play. So I followed her to the hall. I sat in the third row, wishing I
were in my room drawing.
I saw Ms. Carson pulled a cardboard (硬纸板) castle onto the middle of the stage. It was brown with small
windows and doors. After that, Ms. Carson turned on the music, and Kristie and the Prince started dancing. I had to
admit, Kristie was really good. When Ms. Carson hit a piece of metal with a little stick 12 times, Kristie ran off the
stage and dropped her left shoe. The curtain came down. Ms. Carson said the rest would go on the next day.
“When will we get the real sets (布景)?” Kristie pointed to the cardboard castle.
“These are the real sets,” Ms. Carson said, “We don’t have an art teacher this term. So that’s the best we
could do.”
Kristie and I walked out. I praised Kristie for her good job. I told her everyone would love the play. Kristie
thanked me but she was worried about the sets. I thought for a moment. And then I decided to do something.

Oh no. Mrs. Du just said my name - for leading the performance in the opening ceremony for the upcoming
sports meeting! Our class had chosen the theme of “Unity in Diversity.” We were required to celebrate the different
cultures represented in our country. Not the event I had wished!
Beads of sweat popped out from my forehead. Morgan, my best friend and fellow dancer, pressed her elbow
into my side, trying to offer some moral support. “Maybe Du has more confidence in you than you think.” “Or maybe
She just wants to give the rest a laugh when I struggle through the track,” I thought desperately. I walked toward
Mrs. Du and told her about my worries and my desire to quit this performance. She frowned and asked if that was
what I really wanted. I hesitated. She smiled and urged me to go practice as much as possible.
The first practice was a disaster. I struggled with the music. My feet felt clumsy (笨拙的), and my movements
were ridiculous. I felt like everyone was watching, maybe even laughing at my attempts, and my stomach twisted
with embarrassment. What if I tripped? What if I forgot the moves?
The next day at school, Morgan asked if we could practice together. We met in the gym after classes, and as
we danced side by side, I started to feel better. We began with some warm-up exercises, stretching our bodies and
relaxing our muscles. I felt the tightness in my legs ease as we laughed and tried out silly dance moves. As we
practiced, some of our classmates joined us “We’re all in this together!” We practiced the tricky sections again and
again, each time growing more confident. My classmates cheered each time I nailed a move, and their encouragement
made me feel stronger. “You’ve got this!” Morgan said, smiling brightly.
Finally, the big day came. The atmosphere was electric with expectation and the classmates were buzzing
with excitement. I took a deep breath, reminding myself of all the hard work we had put into this moment.
