三、阅读理解(本题共20小题,每小题2分,共40分。)A
My grandfather is an eighty-year-old man. He changed, and he often says that life used to be better.
Families aren’t families the way they used to be. A lot of families have broke down. If husband and wife have
problems with their marriage, they no longer stay together. And mothers used to stay at home and take care of
their children, but now everyone’s working. No one has time to look after children at home.
And the cars! No one walks any more: everyone drives. We used to walk five miles to school every day, even
in winter. But now they don’t. And in schoo1, the children don’t have to think any more. In math class, for example,
we used to add, subtract, multiply and divide in our heads. Kids don’t use their heads any more;instead, they use
calculators(计算器).
Most families have computers now. In the past we didn’t have computers. We didn’t even have lights. My
mother used to spend all day cooking in the kitchen. But now nobody eats home-cooked food any more.

think……

Over the last few centuries, there have been many changes in our lives.
To start with, people were not able to travel such a long distance in such a short time in the past. Planes were
not very popular at that time because they used to be a very expensive way to travel. Nowadays, more and more
people can travel by plane and we can take many other fast and comfortable vehicles, such as cars and high-speed
trains.
Secondly, in the past, people had to work much harder because they did not have the tools we have today.
Today, most of the difficult and dangerous work is done by computers and machines.
Thirdly, in the past, the living conditions were not as good as they are now. There were no bathrooms or
running water in many houses, and many people could not buy things like refrigerators, TV sets or washing
machines. Now, most families have several of these things.
Lastly, communications have become much easier than before. In the past, we kept in touch with others by
writing letters or sending faxes, but now we have many other ways to choose from, such as making a phone call,
sending e-mails or messages and chatting online. Moreover, we can even see the people whom we are making a
phone call with through mobile phones, and we can see each other while chatting online. The most surprising thing
is that we can make a phone call with the astronauts and see them when they are in space. What a magical thing!

At my primary school, I was one of the smartest kids there. I never studied, but always got perfect scores. I
thought I was born clever. At least I believed so. I was also a prodigy in music according to myself. I could sing
better than almost everyone else in my school. I was pretty sure that once I got to sixth grade, everyone would be
surprised by me. But actually, they weren’t.
When I arrived at my new class, I couldn’t wait to show everyone what I could do. However, there was always
someone else who could do them better. My grades began to suffer. More talented girls often sang solo(独唱). I
believed I wasn’t talented. I believed I was a failure.
Over the next two years, I had to work very hard. Every prize for the singing competition was given to me for
hard work and efforts. Grades were still very low but improving little by little. I worked really hard. However, I was
never the best at everything.
I haven’t realized until recently that I really don’t have to be the best at everything. I was too hard on myself.
In fact, when I did badly in a test, my classmates never laughed at me.
No one is perfect. There will probably always be someone better than me at something. Anyway, there are

After my graduation, I worked as a software(软件)developer for a few years. But I realized that no job
could provide me with the satisfaction that I experienced while teaching.
I feel nervous on my first day of teaching. But now I can say that giving lessons was one of the best
experiences of my life: I was a Computer Science major(专业), but I tried to help my students with subjects that
were not within my field. Every morning I would feel energetic and excited thinking about the class and the bright
faces that would be there to greet me, “Good morning, Madam.”
To me, each day was a new beginning, with new feelings and new experiences. I loved to open their young
minds and read their curious(好奇的)faces while they tried to deal with difficult topics. It was very wonderful to
motivate(激励)them to take part in the class, think critically(批判地), question and also respect others’
views.
Although the students didn’t always feel like it was easy, it was very exciting to prove to them that they could
really learn anything. That is why I loved to teach.
