I’m Jack, a sophomore whose life flipped upside down last month.

Evolution(进化) can bring extraordinary makeovers ( 变革). Today’s songbirds evolved
from the wingless dinosaurs that wandered millions of years ago. But some creatures seem to be
unchanged—in other words, escape natural selection. The coelacanth, a modern-day fish, looks
almost the same as its 410-million-year-old fossils.
Scientists have long wondered how these species (物种) do so. It has been assumed that
natural selection keeps some species unchanged by selecting for average qualities (stabilizing
selection) rather than selecting for more extreme qualities(directional selection)that would cause a
species to change.
But a study published in the National Academy of Sciences USA conflicts with this idea,
showing that evolution constantly offers different qualities to those seemingly unchanging animals
to improve short-term survival. In the long term, though, “all that evolution cancels out (相互抵
消) and leads to no change,” says the study’s lead author, James Stroud.
Stroud and his colleagues studied lizards (蜥蜴); all relatively unchanged for 20 million
years. The researchers caught members of lizard groups every six months for three years. They
measured each lizard’s head size, leg length, mass and height, as well as the size of its sticky toes
(脚趾头), noting which individuals survived. He saw clearer evidence of directional selection:
some lizards with unique characteristics, such as stickier toes, survived better.
“The study offers a good explanation,” says Tadashi Fukami, an ecologist studying
evolution at Stanford University. Many new qualities are evolving in the short term, but they don’t
provide a crucial advantage over the long term. In other words, species staying unchanged may
simply have found the best possible combination of qualities for lasting success in their
environment. So what happens when the lizards’ environment changes more dramatically? To help
answer this bigger question, Stroud is still making trips to visit the lizards.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest technology topic thanks to the boom (迅速发展) of
ChatGPT. The AI-powered chatbot, created by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, has both impressed and
shocked people with its ability to answer questions, write essays and even argue legal cases. Its
capabilities have also put another topic at the forefront of people’s minds: if, how and when AI
might impact their jobs.
The short answer to the question of whether AI will replace some jobs is a big, fat “yes”.
Certain roles are more harmed by this than others -especially ones that are highly repetitive or

based on very specific instructions or rules that lay out what needs to be done. Tasks that change
often and therefore require things like adaptability and changing skills are harder for technology to
replace. Jobs with a strong human element - such as being a therapist (治疗专家) - are especially
unlikely to be taken over.
The concerns aren’t surprising, says Steve Chase, consulting leader at KPMG U. S. “As
with most technological advancements, an initial fear of job loss and displacement among workers
is natural.” Similar disruption (混乱) has happened before: for example, the spread of computers,
or more advanced and specialized machines in factories. History shows if jobs are lost to new
technology, other roles have been created in their place.
“I think at the moment we are quite far from ‘real AI’ in the sense that all the models that
we have are about predicting the right response given a set of data. Much of what Al does is to
combine existing knowledge with a specific goal in mind,” Dimitris Papanikolaou, a professor of
finance, says. “This is quite far from creating new knowledge.”
People working alongside AI, rather than being replaced by it, is therefore a more likely
scene for now. AI allows organizations to reshape roles in a way that minimizes time spent on
repetitive tasks and maximizes strategic decision - making. So they will likely become a bigger
part of everyday working life - potentially sooner rather than later.
