On May 24, 1869 on the Green River, ten men were putting bags into four small boats. They were about to
leave for a dangerous, exciting exploration along the great Colorado River. The leader of the group was John
Wesley Powell.
Powell wrote in his diary, “The good people of Green River City turn out to see
us start. We raise our little flag, push the boats from coast, and the water carries us
down. ”
So John Wesley Powell’s story of his trip began on the river. The trip was just as
dangerous as expected. The rivers were filled with rocks and waterfalls. Sometimes,
the boats turned over and one of them even broke into two against a big rock. The
explorers suffered from the hot Sun and cold rain. They lost many of their things.
But they went on.On August 13th, 1869, they reached the mouth of the Grand Canyon （大峡谷. Situation became so bad that
three of the men left to try to reach the land. Two days later, the rest of the group sailed out of the danger of the
Grand Canyon.
It was one of the greatest trips in the history of North America. He and his men were the first whites to travel
in that area. Until then, the land had been known only to Indians who said others could not be successful to get
there. But John Wesley Powell believed it could. And he believed it would provide wealth and valuable
information about that part of America.
The story of the brave explorers was introduced in newspapers all over the country. John Wesley Powell
became famous. Powell explorations led to the birth of the United States Geological Survey （地质调查局）in
1879.

Chinese space exploration(探索) made great achievements in 2020， with the most significant event being the
Chang’e 5 mission(任务)，China Daily reported.
The Chang’e 5 was China’s first sample(样本) return mission. It traveled in space for 23 days and brought
back 1.7 kg of lunar(月球的) rock and soil samples to Earth. This was the world’s first lunar return mission since1976 and made China the third country to complete a lunar return mission after the United States and the former
Soviet Union.
The lunar samples have been sent to laboratories for research that will improve understanding of the state，
temperature，and material content(物质含量)of the moon. Some of the samples will be put on display to
encourage scientific interest. "This will greatly encourage people, especially young people, to study and explore the
worlds beyond Earth, " Xiao Long, a planetary scientist said..
China also views the mission as part of mankind's exploration of the moon as a whole.
The Chang’e 5 landing site was very deliberately(审慎地) chosen. The Mons Rumker site, which had never
been sampled before, is geologically younger than the sampling areas of the US and Soviet missions. Scientists
believe the new samples could help to understand the moon’s volcanic(火山的) activity and evolution(演变).
China has promised to share its samples with scientists from other countries. Some foreign scientists have
shown interest. Lunar exploration is for the benefit of international scientific research. Mankind will explore the
moon together, as large exploration projects will require international cooperation in the future. China will play a
leadership role in the international scientific community, China Daily noted

Christopher Columbus (哥伦布) , who is one of several historical persons regarded as the first European to
discover the Americas, was born in 1451 in Italy. His father was a wool businessman. When he was young,
Columbus loved sailing adventure very much. When he was 26 years old, he began to make business voyages(航
行). The farthest countries he reached were Iceland and Guinea.
At that time, many European countries became stronger and stronger. Their ships reached Africa and Asia.
They got gold, silver, silk, tea and other things from the countries of Asia. The book The Travels of Marco Polo
greatly influenced him, in which China and India were written perfectly. Columbus wanted to make another way to
these two countries. Since he didn’t have enough money, he asked some countries for help, such as, Portugal,
Spain, the UK and France. He told the leaders the earth was round and if they helped him, he could easily get to
China. Nobody believed his words and he was regarded as a cheat. Of course, he didn’t succeed.
It was not until 1492 that his dream came true. The queen of Spain persuaded the King to support Columbus.
On August 2, 1492, Columbus left Spain and began his voyage. He had three ships. After two months' hard sailing
on October 12, they got to an island in the Bahamas. On October 29, they reached Cuba. But a few days later, one
of his ships left them. And on December 25, his flagship sunk. Luckily, the ship that left them joined him again.
They went back to Lisbon on March 4, 1493.
Although they didn't get to rich Asian countries and took back wealth, they found a new place that nobody had
gone to. Columbus thought it was India and called the islands the West Indians.
From 1493 to 1504, he sailed to America three times. He reached most of the coast of southern America and
set up many colonies.
On May 20, 1506, Columbus died because of a disease.

Five Famous Explorers in History
Christopher Columbus (1452 — 1506)
As an Italian explorer, Columbus made four important voyages to the
Americas (1st journey was in 1492 to the Bahamas). Sailing in unknown
seas, Columbus made humans know about the knowledge of crossing the
Atlantic and the Americas.
Vasco da Gama (1469 — 1524)
Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who was the first European to
reach India by sea. Da Gama made a direct voyage to India — travelling
around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa — arriving in Calicut in
1498, which connected Europe and Asia for the first time by ocean route.
Roald Amundsen (1872 — 1928)
Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer and an important person during
Antarctic exploration. His Antarctic expedition (探险队) of 1910 - 1912
discovered the South Pole. In 1926, he led the first successful expedition
to reach the North Pole. He also made the first voyage through the
Northwest Passage.
John Cabot (1450 — 1499)
Cabot was an Italian voyager and explorer. In 1497, he discovered parts of
North America (later named Newfoundland). This is widely considered to
be the first European discovery of North America since the Viking
journeys of the 11th century
Sir Francis Drake (1540 - 1597)
Drake was an English explorer who successfully made the second
Voyage around the world from 1577 to 1580. He also discovered the
