M: I want to be known as a modern Columbus when I grow up.
W: But there are no new places to open up now.
M: That’s not really true. Most places in space haven’t been explored yet. Who knows? There may be other
planets like the Earth.
W: That sounds crazy.
M: No, it doesn’t. Perhaps I could go on a trip to space and find these new planets. I would be a real pioneer. And
if I find other people on these planets, I could develop a relationship with them. I could even set up trade with
them and make a lot of money.
W: Keep dreaming! I don’t think you will travel into space.
听下面第二段对话,回答第8-9两个问题。W: Ben, who do you think was a great man in history?
M: George Stephenson. He invented a lot of things in his life.
W: Oh, he invented the telephone, didn’t he?
M: No, I am afraid not. Actually he built the first public railway in the world. We can now travel from place to
place by train because of him.
W: You are right. He was really great.
M: So how about you?
W: Mm ... I think Confucius was great.
M: What do you know about him?
W: Well ... he was wise and he was the greatest thinker in Chinese history. People from all over the world learn a
lot from his famous sayings.
M: That’s true. Oh, the bell is ringing. It’s time for Mr Smith’s class.
W: We’d better hurry up.
听下面第三段对话,回答第10-11两 个问题。
M: Karen, you look worried. What’s the matter?
W: Well ... it will be my turn to give a speech in the history class next week. But I still have no idea about what I
should talk about. Could you give me some advice?
M: What about introducing a famous explorer?
W: That’s a good idea. But who should I introduce?
M: What about the famous French explorer, Jacques Cartier?
W: Jacques Cartier? Can you tell me something about him?
M: Well ... Jacques was ordered to find a way to Asia which was believed to be a place full of treasure. Although
he never found it in his life, he discovered Canada and gave the country its name. Also, his travels had great
meaning to French early exploring in North America.
W: He was amazing. But how can I learn more detailed information about his voyage?
M: I have a great book about that and you may find something useful for your speech.
W: But I am bored with reading.
M: Well ... there are many videos about the great explorer on the Internet. I am sure they can help you a lot.
W: Sounds great. I’ll do it right away.

James Cook, also known as Captain Cook, was a famous explorer of Britain. Early in the 18th century, he saw
an unusual animal during his first visit to Australia. The animal had a large mouth-like head and jumped along on
its large legs. Captain Cook was surprised. He pointed to the animal which was eating grass in the distance and
asked his local guide what that animal was. The guide seemed not to know what he was pointing at and finally
said Kang a roo. Cook carefully wrote down Kang a roo as the animal’s name in his word book. The Europeans
who later got to Australia were also interested in the unusual animal “Kang a roo” and wanted to have a look at it.
However, when they were saying the animal’s name to the local, none of them knew what the animal was. Later
the Europeans found out that the local guide who made the answer to Cook’s question really meant, “I don’t know
what you are pointing at.” Funny enough, the name “Kang a roo” is still in use today.

Amsterdam attracts many visitors every year. It’s known as the “Venice of the North” because of its system
of bridges and canals. Amsterdam Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. It’s located in the southwest
of the city. You can catch a train from the airport to Amsterdam Central Station. It’s not a good idea to drive a car
to the city centre because parking is difficult to find. You can choose cycling which is popular here, and it’s easy
to find cheap bikes around town. Most visitors start their trip in the Old Centre, where you can find many
traditional buildings, shopping centres, and coffee shops.答案1.A 2.B 3.B 4.A 5.C 6.C 7.B 8.B 9.A 10.B 11.A
