One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public
library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her
to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children's Room.” I sat down on the
floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my
eye. It presented a picture of a beagle. I had recently had a beagle, the first and only
animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he
was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I
never forgot my beagle.
There on the book's cover was a beagle which looked identical(相同的)to my dog. I
ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title,
Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the
book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly
with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about
a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way
back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of
the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost
dog and I were, in my mind, running together.
My mother's call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had
read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I
had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
I never told my mother about my“miraculous”(奇迹般的)experience that summer,
but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the
next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was
awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The
power of the words has held.
24.The book caught the author's eye because ________.
A.it contained pretty pictures of animals
B.he found its title easy to understand
C.he liked children's stories very much
D.it reminded him of his own dog
25.Why could the author manage to read the book through?
A.He was forced by his mother to read it.B.The book told the story of his pet dog.
C.He identified with the story in the book.
D.The happy ending of the story attracted him.
26.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The author's mother read the same book.
B.The author's mother rewarded him with books.
C.The author has become a successful writer
D.The author has had happy summers ever since.
27.Which one could be the best title of the passage?
A.Mum's Strict Order
B.Reunion with My Beagle
C.The Charm of a Book
D.My Passion for Reading

There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual(个体的)ant
hardly weighs anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind.
They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles.
For animals their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their
wonderful social behavior.
In colonies(群体)that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they
organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they
achieve this level of organization. Where we use sound and sight to communicate, ants
depend primarily on pheromones(外激素), chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled
or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a
pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant
comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to
prepare for a conflict as a defense unit.
In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely
fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large
groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the
colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help
defeat an enemy.
Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on
Earth for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as
one, they have a collective(集体的)intelligence greater than you would expect from itsindividual parts.
28.We can learn from the passage that ants are________.
A.not found around the poles
B.not willing to share food
C.more successful than all other animals
D.too many to achieve any level of organization
29.Ants can use pheromones for________.
A.communication B.escape
C.warning enemies D.arranging labor
30.What does the underlined expression“take on”in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Accept. B.Employ.
C.Fight against. D.Play with.
31.Which of the following contributes most to the survival of ants?
A.Their size. B.Their behavior.
C.Their number. D.Their weight.

Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other
and pass on their wealth to the next generation?
UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us
ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of
the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true : trees
survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary
nutrition“depending on who needs it”.
Nitrogen(氮)and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi(真菌)networks,
making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right
amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the
networks of neurons(神经元)in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all.
Simard talks about“mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all
other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next
generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow.
When humans cut down“mother trees”with no awareness of these highly complex“tree
societies”or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival
for the entire forest.
“We didn't take any notice of it”Simard says sadly.“Dying trees move nutrition
into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.”If we could putacross the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our
environmental protection efforts for the future.
32.The underlined sentence“the opposite is true”in Paragraph 2 probably means that
trees ________.
A.compete for survival
B.protect their own wealth
C.provide support for dying trees
D.depend on each other
33.“Mother trees”are extremely important because they ________.
A.pass on nutrition to young trees
B.look the largest in size in the forest
C.seem more likely to be cut down by humans
D.know more about the complex“tree societies”
34.The underlined word“it”in the last paragraph refers to ________.
A.how trees grow old
B.how“tree societies”work
C.how forestry industry develops
D.how young trees survive
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Old Trees Communicate Like Humans
B.Young Trees Are In Need Of Protection
C.Trees Contribute To Our Society
D.Trees Are More Awesome Than You Think
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you,
it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be
surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness,
anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
36_____Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. 37_____ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives
you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend toapologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. 38_____
Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person
who upset you.
Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives
power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your mounded feelings, learn to
look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
39_____If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of
unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s
point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 40_____ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you
don’t do it.
A.How should you start to forgive?
B.Why should you forgive?
C.For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
D.Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
E.Try to see things from you offender’s angle.
F.If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.
G.To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp
overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came
up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that
she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp”and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had
climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she
saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly
realized that she was lost.
“Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept
moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was
beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in
the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold
him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴
落) somewhere at a distance . Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great
joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life
had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream
and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for
me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few
minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse , thinking
that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.
