Dear Mike,
I’m delighted to share my experience at our school sports meeting last week. I
signed up for the 800-meter race — not only because I’m interested in running, but
also hope to challenge myself.
The most unforgettable part was during the race: I started well, but halfway
through, my legs felt heavy and I wanted to give up. Just then, I heard my classmates
shouting my name and their cheers echoed around the track. Gathering my strength, I
kept running and finally crossed the finish line.
Looking back, I don’t care much about the race result. It is the courage I
gained and the warmth of their support that make a big difference to me.
Yours,
Li Hua
Paragraph 1:
Hearing the news, I was almost close to tears. A wave of despair grew in my
heart. The idea of being left alone onstage made me tremble, let alone singing in front
of so many audience. I murmured to myself, “without Alice’s company, this talent
show would definitely be an impossible task”. As I stood there, feeling at a loss, a
gentle touch on my shoulder brought me back to reality. It was my mom, who stroked
my hair and looked at me with a a comforting smile, “I believe you can make it.”
Hearing my mum’s words, I made up my mind to give it a try. Memories of countless
rehearsal came flooding back, drowning my fears and losses. I practiced singing in no
time.
Paragraph 2:
Finally came the big moment. Seized by nervousness, I felt my heart was pounding
so hard that I paced back and forth backstage. The moment my name was called , I
could feel butterflies in my stomach flying wildly. I gathered my courage, took a deep
breath and stepped onto the platform. I cast my eyes randomly to the audience and
spotted a familiar face at the corner. It was Alice who came to watch my performance
and cheer for me. With the music rising, I began singing and immersed myself in it
completely. When I finished, the audience cast approving glances at me, with
thunderous applause echoing around the hall. From this experience, it dawns on me
that only when you make great efforts to defeat fears and overcome self-doubt can you
gain confidence.

Text 1
M: I’m only working three days a week now. How many days do you work at the store, Jenny?
W: Usually Monday through Friday, but sometimes I work on Saturday too.
Text 2
M: Was everything all right?
W: Yes, it was wonderful. I especially liked the dessert.
M: It is one of our specialties.
W: May I have the check, please?
Text 3
M: Penny, I don’t know how to set up the wireless printer.
W: Well, you do need to run the set-up program before you can print from your laptop. Have a look
at the instructions. Here they are.
Text 4
W: How long have you been in this area?
M: We moved here five years ago. Before that, we were in a very small office building in the center
of town.
W: And when was the company set up?
M: Ten years ago, by our boss Simon Donna.
Text 5
W: Excuse me. I was just wondering where you bought that.
M: This sandwich? Just down the road at the cafe.
W: OK. Thanks. I’ll go and get one myself.
Text 6
W: What are you doing this weekend?
M: I’m going to the flower festival with my parents. You’re going to the music festival then,
aren’t you? I heard they’ve got some fantastic bands this year and are expecting thousands of
visitors!
W: Yes, that’s right. My friend’s father is organizing the event, so we’ve got free tickets.
M: Lucky you!
W: Yes, but we’ve both got to help. My friend’s got to check tickets. He’s asked me to take photos,
and I don’t mind doing that.
Text 7
W: Did you see that documentary, Nature Watch, last night?
M: I did. I wouldn’t want to miss anything from that series. I didn’t think it was as good as last
week’s one on elephants, though.
W: I actually find dolphins much more interesting, so I thought last night’s one was better. The next
one’s about bears, which should be great.
M: Yeah, I can’t wait. There is one problem with the series though.
W: Oh, what’s that?
M: I really can’t find any problem with the camera work, but I think whoever wrote the music
shouldn’t be asked to do it for a nature series again. It’s a bit annoying, especially when I try to
focus on the story.
Text 8
M: Sally, tell me something about your gap year.
W: Oh, well, my gap year was very different from yours! I decided to stay at home and work.
M: Oh, why did you decide to do that?
W: Actually, I had to. My family are not rich, so I had to work to pay for my university courses.
M: And did you enjoy that?
W: Hmm, it was OK. The pay was not that good, and the work itself was not creative, but I got on
well with the people I worked with. So, do you feel a gap year is a good thing?
M: Yes! It was a great chance to see the world before I went to university.
W: You’re lucky, Rob!
Text 9
W: So, I’ve decided to make a wish list like I was telling you. I’ve put down some ideas, but now I
can’t think of anything else. Any ideas?
M: Have you ever been on a hot-air balloon ride?
W: No, I haven’t.
M: It’s really fun — you get great views of the city and the countryside. You should definitely add
it to your list.
W: Right, OK, hot-air balloon ride.
M: Have you thought about joining a drama club? You could perform in a play.
W: Well, that’s a challenge! I’ve never performed in a play. Anything else?
M: Here’s another idea. Have you ever been to a film festival?
W: No, I’ve never done that, but I’d like to.
M: And here’s another one. I know you care about animals. Why don’t you start a local group to
raise money for wildlife?
W: Yes, that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.
Text 10
M: Good morning, everyone. If you ask me which city I really want to visit, it’s Rome, the capital
of Italy. It’s a city that has always attracted me because of its culture. I’m particularly interested
in its architecture since it has examples from all major European styles of building. Besides, it
was the capital of the Roman Empire, so it has a wonderful collection of public buildings from
that time.
What I think is great about Rome is that many of the beautiful and historic buildings are still in
use, as galleries, public offices and even houses. They are not all locked up as museums, so it’s
really living history there. Even though it’s an expensive city to stay in, I’d like to go there for
at least a month, as there’s so much to see and do. During my time there, I’d have to be careful
that I didn’t spend too much on Roman food! Plus, I’d like to find a cheap hotel. It would
probably be in the centro storico, the old center of the city, probably within walking distance of
the River Tevere. Most visitors to Rome would agree that it is a very special place but for me, it'
s Europe’s most historic and romantic city.

根据第二段“The 17-year-old boy went viral (走红) on Sina Weibo recently
for his knowledge of biology, which led him to discover a new species of freshwater crabs of
Sinolapotamon in 2022.
Zhang’s father, who was born in a rural area, loved catching
fish and crabs himself at an early age, so Zhang was always taken outdoors by his parents to
explore as much as possible and observe little creatures quietly without being interrupted.
It’s a place where Zhang can devote himself to identifying or
observing the specimens of shrimps and crabs day and night. With the help of his microscope,
Zhang concentrates on exploring the natural world. Sometimes he spends hours simply
examining a piece of fish scale, the leg of a crab or the antenna of an insect. He often works so
late that his parents have to force him to go to bed.

Instead of being addicted to smartphones and games, Zhang
Yixuan prefers to spend his summer vacation walking in nature, meeting with little creatures
like shrimps (虾) and crabs (蟹).
It’s a place where Zhang can devote
himself to identifying or observing the specimens of shrimps and crabs day and night. With

根据第三段:“ the Internet has made it much easier to reach audiences
around the world without people having to enter a career in show business in the traditional
way.”
For every success there are hundreds of others who never
get off the starting line.”(每一个成功者的背后,都有数百人从未真正起步。)
故选A 项。

The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70,
all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it
in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.(这项新研究包
“On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in
their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not
故选 A。
In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure
to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple
thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.(Jeffrey 说道:“在
The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy
treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.(研究结果表明,随着年龄的增长,红

Here are some easy steps to make a Chinese hot pot at
F 项“It will make sure that the items will cook
quickly and fully.”(这将确保食物迅速且完全地煮熟。)
D 项“Popular choices include:cabbage,
B 项“Finally, arrange the seating reasonable.”(最后,合理地安
A 项“Now
comes the turn to enjoy your hot pot!”(现在轮到享用你的火锅了!)

take down“拆掉”,set
通过后半句的“the five-hour drive from the airport”可知他们是坐飞机来的,
