Winter was the worst time of year if you didn’t have a home to go to. Tragically, I found myself in
that terrible situation, by no fault of my own. A string of bad luck had caused it. Losing my job after
twelve years of loyal service, then my landlord evicting me because I had no money to pay the rent.
Feeling embarrassed about the situation I faced, I kept it a secret from my parents, who lived miles
away.
Maybe I should have asked for help, but something in the back of my mind stopped me every time I
picked up a phone, hoping everything would work out in the end.
If only that were true.
In December, as happy families went shopping for Christmas, I would watch them from a shop
entrance with only a thin blanket to keep me warm. On over one occasion, I would cry under the blanket
so no one could see me. I was so ashamed. How could things have got so bad?
A few days later, the most wonderful thing happened. While the snow fell heavily and my blanket
was wet through, a man approached me with a kind smile, and he said, “It’s freezing, buddy. I can’t have
you staying out here tonight, especially on the Christmas holidays, as if anything happened to you, I
couldn’t live with myself.”
I looked up at him and a tear came to my eye. “Why would you help me?” I replied.
The man gently placed a hand on my shoulder, and then said, “It’d be nice to have someone with

me again after losing my Betty last year. And there was me thinking I was going to spend Christmas on
my own.” He laughed.

from deep down inside, and I believed in miracles again.

Imagine a chameleon (变色龙) standing on a rainbow. With every step, it changes color, trying to
match its surroundings. But the more it tries, the more confused it gets. Is it red, blue, or green? This is
the dilemma (困境) many teenagers face today — shifting identities (身份) in an attempt to belong.
Psychologist Erik Erikson described adolescence as a stage of “identity vs. role confusion.” It’s a
time when young people struggle with questions about their values, purpose, and self-worth. Take a girl
for example, a 16-year-old student named Wanjiku in Nairobi. At home, her parents remind her to
maintain cultural values — dress modestly, respect elders, and pursue a “practical” career like medicine
or law. At school, her peers laugh at her for not being “cool” enough because she doesn’t follow the
latest TikTok trends or wear designer sneakers. Wanjiku feels like a chameleon, constantly changing to
fit into spaces where she never feels truly accepted.
This tug-of-war (拔河) between cultural expectations and global influences is a defining aspect of
the identity crisis for many teenagers. Urban teens struggle with balancing tradition and modernity,
while those in rural areas feel left behind in a digital age they can barely access. Add peer pressure and
academic expectations to the mix, and the search for identity becomes even more challenging.
The good news is that every teenager has the potential to overcome this crisis and find their true
self. Like a tree bending in the wind, they may shake under pressure but can grow stronger with the
right support. Teens need to understand that their worth isn’t determined by others’ opinions. Activities
like journaling can help them reflect on their values, passions and strengths. Parents and teachers can
guide teenagers toward discovering their true selves. Teaching teenagers to critically analyze social
media can protect them from falling into the trap of comparison.

Move over protein (蛋白质), there’s a new hot nutrient-fiber (纤维)! The social media trend of
fibermaxxing focuses on eating more fiber at meals and snacks. Like all trends, it can be done correctly.
Yet many on social media are doing it incorrectly — and even dangerously.
The idea of fibermaxxing is to meet and even go beyond your daily fiber goals. According to the
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, women should aim for about 25 grams of fiber per day, while men
should aim for about 38 grams. To calculate more exact numbers, the recommendation is 14 grams of
fiber for every 1,000 calories. Americans consume on average only 15 grams of fiber per day, so upping
fiber is certainly a smart idea.
As many people think more is better, some influencers are going all out on fibermaxxing with not
only foods like vegetables, fruit, beans, peas, nuts and seeds at meals and snacks, but also by adding
various fiber supplements (补充剂), which gets them above the recommended daily fiber amount.
“Like so many TikTok trends, this one has the potential for harm if not approached properly,” says
dietitian (营养学家)Rosanne Rust, co-author of the forthcoming cookbook “The GLP-1Kitchen”. Rust
explains that many of the trending videos propose “fibermaxxing” to help treat bloating ( 腹胀),
however most people aren’t aware of how much fiber they are eating before they adopt this trend and
then add 20 grams of fiber (or more) to their diet overnight.
According to dietitian Liz Weiss, founder of Liz’s Healthy Table, balance matters. “People with
certain medical conditions often need to limit their fiber intake.” says Weiss. This is because high
amounts of fiber can be difficult for their systems to manage and may worsen symptoms.
“If you’re not sure how much fiber is right for you, a registered dietitian nutritionist can help guide
you,” says Weiss. “Trends may come and go, but a well-balanced, whole-food diet will always stand the
test of time.”
第7 页共10 页
32. What can we learn from the figures in paragraph 2?
A. Americans don’t take in enough fiber every day.
B. Men take in more fiber than women in daily life.
C. Taking in as much fiber as possible is good for health.
D. Americans’ daily fiber intake meets the suggested amount.
33. What is the problem with fibermaxxing according to Rust?
A. People overdo it unknowingly.
B. It spreads fast on social media.
C. Influencers lie about its benefits.
D. Americans lack fiber because of it.
34. What is Weiss’s suggestion for people about a balanced diet?
A. To follow the latest trend.
B. To register as a nutritionist.
C. To seek advice from experts.
D. To replace fiber with whole food.
35. What can be a suitable best title for the text?
A. Fiber: The Hidden Threat to Wellbeing
B. Fiber: The Vital Nutrient for Your Health
C. Fibermaxxing: The Best Dietary Approach
D. Fibermaxxing: The Latest Nutrition Trend

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One
reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while
another read: “
36
” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a
subtle(微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner?
First of all, decide what you want from that person.
37
Or do you just want to be physically
fit, able to move with strength and flexibility? Think about the exercises you would like to do with your
workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won't
result in a useful response.
38
If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the
same gym.

You and your partner will probably have different skills.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted
to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and
shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along
the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been
wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting
books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and
danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children
shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily
passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook
his head, and a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say,
“These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress (困境).
