Sumi has a daughter named Anna who carries a nickname: “Number 23”. No matter what the exam subject or
school term is, Anna always lands 23rd out of 50 students in her class. Sumi can’t help but feel worried.
One day, Sumi went on a weekend trip with her friends and their families. During lunch, two boys got into a
heated argument over a single candy. Even their parents couldn’t calm them down. Anna walked over calmly and
said, “Let’s throw a coin. The winner gets the candy.” Simple as that, the fight ended.
Later, on the way back, they got caught in a traffic jam. The kids grew bored and impatient. Anna stepped in.
She told silly jokes like a caring big sister, making even the adults laugh. She also cut leftover candy boxes and turned
them into cute paper animals and gave one to each kid as a gift. The other parents thanked her with bright smiles, and
for the first time in years, Sumi felt proud of her daughter.
Then one afternoon, Anna’s teacher called. “Anna’s grades are still around 23rd,” she said gently, “but we
added a question to the last exam: ‘Who’s your favorite classmate, and why?’ Almost every student wrote Anna’s
name. They say she’s kind, listens carefully when others talk, and always helps people in need. She’s a truly wonderful
child.” Sumi’s eyes were filled with tears of joy. Sumi suddenly realized that grade isn’t the only type of success.
Being kind, staying happy, and being true to yourself are the truest kinds of success. Maybe being “Number 23” isn’t
such a bad thing after all.
4. What made Sumi anxious?
A. Anna’s exam results.
B. Anna’s lack of hobbies.
C. The family’s poor condition.
D. The mother-daughter relationship.
5. Which of the following can best describe Anna?
A. A quiet loner.
B. A book fan.
C. A day-dreamer.
D. A problem-solver.
6. What did Sumi realize at the end of the story?
A. Anna should study harder.
B. Anna has her own strengths.
C. Anna has improved in study.
D. Anna needs to be more confident.
7. Which could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Grades: A Mother’s Anxiety
B. Anna’s Small Acts of Kindness
C. Number 23: The Quiet Hero
D. Sumi’s Expectation for Anna

Students and teachers came together to paint something on glass in a community effort to reduce window
strikes during the fall migration (迁徙).
The windows at E.J. Pratt Library just got a bird-friendly improvement, after students painted white trees on
the glass to help keep birds from crashing into Victoria University’s beautiful buildings.
A partnership between BirdSafe U of T and Victoria University in the University of Toronto, the bird-friendly
building initiative (倡议) event brought together students and teachers who care about protecting the birds that
share our space. The window-treatment process included drawing dense (密集的), high-contrast patterns on the
outside surface, which can help break up the reflection and warn birds about the glass. The goal is to reduce the
number of bird-window collision fatalities (撞击死亡事故) on Vic U’s campus this fall migration.
Hearing the concerns (担忧) about bird safety on Vic U’s campus from students and teachers, Kam Jahresi,
senior manager of campus operations, helped organize the event with BirdSafe U of T. Students and teachers set up
prints of the bird-friendly drawings, using them as guides to paint the outside windows of E.J. Pratt Library. Vic U’s
president Rhonda McEwen also joined the event.
Jahremi was thankful for the community support. “Students loved both the art and the event’s environmental
focus,” he said. “They are interested in taking part in similar events in the future! The partnership shows that
sustainability (可持续性) is a team effort.”
BirdSafe U of T co-creator Carly Davenport was gratified to see the results of the event. “Everyone showed
interest in our cause and took part,” she said. “It was great to speak with students from different backgrounds who
came to learn about the event.”
8. What problem do birds face on Victoria University’s campus?
A. They may be driven away by local people.
B. They may be attacked by homeless cats.
C. They may crash into the buildings.
D. They may lose their way.
9. What action did the students and teachers at Victoria University take?
A. Painting on window glass.
B. Increasing the area of trees.
C. Changing the color of buildings.
D. Putting on a show of bird drawings.
10. What does the underlined word “gratified” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Sorry.
B. Anxious.
C. Curious.
D. Satisfied.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Better sharing of space with birds
B. Making a school building a new home for birds
C. Training birds for the ever-changing human world
D. Better understanding birds’ importance to the campus

Ever wondered how many calories (卡路里) are on your plate? Cal AI, a smart fitness app, provides fast
answers. Simply take a picture of the food, and the app will provide you with an accurate (准确的) calorie count to
help you make smarter eating decisions.
Cal AI is the brainchild of Zach Yadegari. The 18-year-old teenager came up with the idea in 2023 after having
a hard time with traditional calorie-counting apps. “I was tracking calories on MyFitnessPal,” he explains. “After
three days, I stopped. I was having so much trouble using their app, typing in everything — it took so much time.”
In order to find a better way, Yadegari teamed up with some high school friends to build a simpler, more
accurate tool. They focused on accurate calorie counting. They trained Cal AI using pictures from three different AI
models. This helped it to recognize what’s in packaged foods and meals like mixed bowls. The final challenge was
estimating portion sizes (估算分量). This was solved by comparing user photos to standard portions. The
developers say that Cal AI is 90% accurate in recognizing foods and counting calories.
Since it came out in May 2024, Cal AI has been downloaded (下载) over five million times. More than 30% of
users continue to use the app. In February 2025 alone, it brought in over $2 million, and the numbers continue to
grow.
Most of Cal AI’s popularity comes from online marketing. Yadegari uses his own social media (社交媒体) to
find fitness influencers who can help share Cal AI with their followers. As a result, Cal AI is especially popular
among young users aged 15–25.
Yadegari will graduate from high school this summer. Although he has been accepted to many universities, he
plans to take a year off to focus on Cal AI, which now has 17 workers. His goals include improving the app’s
accuracy to over 90% and drawing users of all ages.
12. What is Cal AI mainly used for?
A. Delivery foods.
B. Counting calories.
C. Sharing cooking skills.
D. Offering exercise instructions.
13. How can users get Cal AI to work?
A. By taking photos.
B. By giving voice directions.
C. By typing in their food choices.
D. By feeding their health information.
14 What do the numbers in paragraph 4 show about Cal AI?
A. It has been questioned by the public.
B. It has few users.
C. It is highly accurate.
D. It is well received.
15. What will Yadegari do with Cal AI next?
A. Enter a competition with it.
B. Bring down its costs.
C. Grow its user group.
D. Rewrite it.
第二节(共5 小题;每小题2.5 分,满分12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
Imagine understanding rapid conversation between native speakers, easily following your favorite English
podcasts (播客), or knowing exactly what is going on in an important business meeting. ____16____.
If you’ve spent hours reading textbooks, memorizing verb changes, and remembering phrases in front of a mirror
to learn English, you’ve been doing it wrong. Although these methods are useful in their own way, they’re missing
one key point. Your ears. Listening skills form the foundation (基础) of language mastery. You can’t communicate
without them. ____17____. It’s also about understanding how the voice, feelings, and the context of those words
contribute to their meaning.
Learning English by listening helps you understand native speakers and learn how to find important differences in
conversations. ____18____. Addicting yourself completely to active listening is the only way to build that strong
foundation.
____19____. Did you start with grammar rules? Of course not. You listened. You understood. You spoke again
and again. Now, it’s time to recreate that process with English.
Passive listening is the only problem. When the TV is on but you’re using social media on your phone, that’s
passive listening. Or, when you’re in a group conversation but you’re actually thinking about what you’re going to
have for dinner. Active listening goes beyond simply hearing the words that another person says. ____20____. It’s
active listening that will help you become a fluent English speaker.
A. It’s easy but should follow some rules
B. It is achievable through active listening
C. You must know the benefits of active listening
D. Think about how you learned your native language
E. Listening is not just hearing the words someone says
F. It also helps you feel confident in English-speaking environments
G. It’s about digging deeper to work out the meaning behind each word
