When I was in primary school, my favorite place was the library. I was the kid who got shouted at for trying to
bring home sixty books at a time because I just couldnˈt decide which world I wanted to experience that week. I
remember spending my weekends glued to a book, hungering for experiencing lives other than my own. Up until
middle school, reading was a passion (酷爱) of mine.
第1 ⻚,共1 2 ⻚
学科⽹(北京)股份有限公司
Something changed after I entered senior high school though. All of a sudden, reading was a task that I could
not avoid fast enough. The books that I read in school bored me, or even if I enjoyed the books themselves, the
difficult homework we completed based on those books made me hate reading as a whole.
It actually wasnˈt until recently that I rediscovered my love for reading. How you may ask? Audiobooks (有声
书). Last summer, I spent every morning taking long walks while listening to them, and I would find myself lost in
the stories for hours. And now Iˈm rediscovering my passion for reading. I feel that pull again. That eagerness.
My love story with reading may have had a happy ending, but not everyone is as lucky as me. What went
wrong?
What will happen is that students lose their love for reading because of the way many schools try to encourage
children to read. For example, when a child is told to read for twenty minutes every night, they will read for the
required amount of time and then check the task off on their list. In this way, reading has suddenly become a boring
task instead of an exciting experience.
Making sure that kids keep their passion for reading will require us to rethink how we teach reading in schools and
how we introduce books to children outside of school as well. There needs to be less of a focus on meeting reading
requirements and more of a focus on creating an environment in which students are actually excited to read.
24. Which word best describes the authorˈs love for books before high school? ( )
A. Confusing.
B. Crazy.
C. Secret.
D. Short-lived.
25. Why did the author once hate reading? ( )
A. She couldnˈt choose what to read.
B. She found high school books difficult.
C. She was given too many books to read.
D. Reading as a task turned her off.
26. What does the underlined word "pull" in paragraph 3 probably mean? ( )
A. Desire.
B. Pressure.
C. Panic.
D. Confidence.
27. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph? ( )
A. Give kids extra-curricular reading tasks.
B. Encourage parents to introduce books to kids.
C. Improve schoolsˈ ways of teaching reading.
D. Develop kidsˈ interest in advanced literature.

During the lively Paris Olympics, while the spotlight shone on the athletes, a group of unsung heroes worked
tirelessly behind the scenes—the Olympic volunteers. This year, out of 300,000 applicants, around 45,000 were
chosen as volunteers, with 20 percent coming from nearly 150 countries. These volunteers wore bright green

uniforms(制服)to be easily noticed in the purple venues(场馆). They offered help to viewers and media alike,
making them an important part of the Olympic experience.
On my first day as a reporter, I met a technical problem with my media system account. Thankfully, Chinese
volunteer Guo came to help me out. “ I hope to improve my language, communication skills, and problem-solving
methods through this event,”
said 24-year-old Guo from Wuhan, Central Chinaˈs Hubei Province, who was
studying wireless communication at the Paris Institute of Digital Technology. As a former professional swimmer,
Guo saw this as her chance to take part in the Olympics, though in a different role. Another Chinese volunteer,
Yang, faced challenges in managing her job and volunteer duties. Despite giving up her holidays, she felt great
pride in contributing to the event.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting with a French volunteer. When I needed help to find the
visitor center, a young man on a scooter(⼩型摩托⻋)appeared, like a sort of “ Monkey King riding a cloud” ,
and offered to take me there. After helping me, he expressed his admiration for the Beijing Olympics and his desire
to visit China again.
Volunteers like them were seen everywhere—from bus stops to competition venues—offering directions and
helping with a smile. When large crowds left the venues after the events, causing overcrowding, some volunteers
sat on high chairs with loudspeakers, providing directions to go outside in both English and French with a smile.
These amazing volunteers, truly showed the Olympic spirit, making the event and Paris shine even brighter.
28. Why might the volunteers wear bright green uniforms?
A. To stand out in the crowd.
B. To show love for athletes.
C. To fit in with the venues.
D. To stand for their countries.
29. What do we know about Guo?
A. She found it hard to balance her job and volunteer work.
B. She both swam and volunteered in the Paris Olympics.
C. She wanted to improve herself through volunteer work.
D. She wasnˈt as patient and helpful as the French volunteer.
30. What is the authorˈs purpose in writing the text?
A. To doubt the organization of the Paris Olympics.
B. To praise the service of the Paris Olympic volunteers.
C. To show the meaning of hosting Olympic Games.
D. To provide a detailed schedule of Olympic events.

Scientific discovery is one of the most complicated human activities for scientists must understand the existing
knowledge, raise a research question and design and conduct an experiment in pursuit of an answer. Can this
complex process be automated?
Last week, Sakana AI Labs announced the creation of an “ AI scientist” —an artificial intelligence system
they claim can make scientific discoveries in a fully automated way. Using generative large language models
(LLMs) like those behind ChatGPT and other AI chatbots, the system can brainstorm, select a promising idea, code
new algorithms (算法), plot results, and write a paper summarizing the experiment and its findings.
Nowadays, a lot of science is done in the open, and almost all scientific knowledge has been written down
somewhere. Millions of scientific papers are freely available online. LLMs trained with this data can easily capture
the language of science and its patterns. It is therefore perhaps not at all surprising that a generative LLM can
produce something that looks like a good scientific paper—it has absorbed many examples that it can copy.
What is less clear is whether an AI system can produce an interesting scientific paper. Crucially, good science
requires novelty. Scientists donˈt want to be told about things that are already known. Rather, they want to learn
new things, especially new things that are significantly different from what is already known.
The Sakana system tries to address novelty in two ways. First, it “ scores” new paper ideas for similarity to
existing research. Anything too similar is cast away. Second, Sakanaˈs system introduces a “ peer review” step—
using another LLM to judge the quality and novelty of the generated paper.
Feedback is mixed on Sakana AIˈs output. Some have described it as producing “ endless scientific slop” . Even
the systemˈs own review of its outputs judges the papers weak at best. This is likely to improve as the technology
evolves, but the question of whether automated scientific papers are valuable remains. Is this the kind of scientific
ecosystem we want?
32. What is the primary function of AI scientist in scientific researches?
A. To help analyze scientific data.
B. To assist scientists in researches.
C. To automate the entire discovery.
D. To review human-authored papers.
33. How do LLMs work?
第1 ⻚,共1 2 ⻚

A. They grasp the scientific terms and frameworks.
B. They conduct scientific researches independently.
C. They include most advanced scientific knowledge.
D. They create papers through direct input from experts.
34. How does the Sakana system attempt to ensure novelty?
A. By adding human expertsˈ review.
B. By ruling out similar paper ideas.
C. By using published research data.
D. By borrowing ideas from new papers.
35. What may be the authorˈs attitude towards AI scientific ecosystem?
A. Unclear.
B. Supportive.
C. Skeptical.
D. Indifferent.

To make us students know about how to protect ourselves during an earthquake, our school organized an
earthquake emergency evacuation drill today.
Before the drill started, our teachers gave us some basic and useful instructions on what to do during an
earthquake. When the alarm rang, students left the teaching building in order. Within a minute, all of the students
gathered in the playground, for which we were praised by our headmaster.
This drill is really meaningful and helpful, from which we have learned some related skills in dealing with
emergencies in an earthquake.
