Gliding (滑行) down theTambopata River in the PeruvianAmazon, I understand the luxury of being on
a boat at night in the jungle. The air is thick with 35°C heat and 99 percent humidity(湿度). The constant
breeze generated by our moving boat offers much-needed escape from the heat, while also keeping the
endless mosquitoes at bay.
仿真模拟新高考I卷英语试卷 第 3 页 共 10 页I am part of a team of five, led by Chris Ketola from Fauna Forever, a conservation NGO
(non-governmental organization). We’re here at night, when caimans(凯门鳄) are most active, to record any
sighting and to catch one for crucial data such as body measurements. This will help us to learn more about
caiman biology andassess population health toaid inthe species’conservation.
A massive shape appears in the current ahead. Our driver Pipi, blind from his back position, reacts
instantly to Chris’s torch signals. The boat turns sharply, missing the log by inches. I let out a sigh of relief
but everyone acts as if the near miss is simply part of the night’s routine. Moments later, the reflective eyes
ofacaiman catch Chris’storchlight.Wechange ourcourse, approaching slowly and quietly.
My lovefor theAmazon began during my 2017 visit toTambopata, where I dreamed ofdocumenting its
unparalleled biodiversity. Now,with Fauna Forever,I’m livingthat dream.
Pipi cuts the engine and glides alongside a caiman, stopping about an arm’s length away. He slowly
extends his hand above the reptile, pauses, and then plunges his hand into the water. Securing a hold on the
animal, hepulls itout. “Ajuvenilewhite caiman,”he states, “about ayear old”.
This is my first close-up look at a wild caiman and I’m in awe: its eyes, tiny white teeth and tough skin
are beautiful and detailed. These animals reached evolutionary perfection millions of years ago and their
unchangedshape sincethetimeofdinosaurs reflects this.

A.They treat it calmly without surprise.
B.They remind Pipi ofpotential threats.
C.They briefly pause fordamage check.

Seeing or hearing someone yawn can make you yawn. This phenomenon is not limited to humans; some
animals experience contagious yawning, too.But why isyawning contagious?
Brain cells called mirror neurons(镜像神经元), which respond toactions that we observe in others, may
play a role. “When you see someone yawn, those neurons fire up,” said Andrew Gallup, a professor of
behavioral biology. This mechanism may explain why yawning spreads so easily within social groups.
仿真模拟新高考I卷英语试卷 第 4 页 共 10 页Research has also shown that people and animals are more likely to yawn in response to yawns from
familiar individuals compared with strangers. For example, in a 2013 study, dogs yawned more frequently
when watching their owner yawn than when watching a stranger yawn. This pattern, known as the
“familiarity bias”, is likely driven by attentional biases, as individuals naturally pay closer attention to those
withintheir social circles.
One hypothesis(假说) is that contagious yawning evolved to boost threat detection within groups. In a
2007 study published in Evolutionary Psychology, Gallup and colleagues found that yawning helps cool the
brain. This cooling effect may improve alertness and mental processing efficiency in the yawner. If yawning
spreads through agroup,it could helpenhance thegroup’s threat awareness, theteam proposed.
Another hypothesis is that contagious yawning evolved to keep groups in sync. Yawns follow a natural
rhythm and often signal transitions between activities. So, when yawning spreads within a group, group
members are consistent in activity patterns and behavior. Support for this hypothesis comes from a recent
study on wild African lions. The researchers observed yawns from 19 lions and tracked the connection
between contagious yawning and behavioral consistency—when individuals show the same changes in
behavior. The results were striking: Lions that “caught” a yawn from another lion were 11 times more likely
tomirror themovements of thelionthat yawned first, compared withlions who hadn’t caught theyawn.
At the end of the day, contagious yawning is less about being tired and more about connection. “It’s
your brain’s quiet way ofgetting in tunewiththe people(and sometimes pets)around you.”
28.What isthemechanism ofcontagious yawning?
A. Drawing special attention tofamiliar individuals.
B.Activating themirror neurons to reduce yawning.
C.Triggering mirrorneurons to imitateobserved actions.
D. Observing similaractions tomake constant responses.
29.What canbeinferred from paragraph 3?
A. Familiaritybias stimulates group behavior.
B. Socialbonds drive contagious yawning.
C. Fullattention dominates yawning patterns.
D. Social circles grab more group attention.
30.What does theunderlined phrase “in sync”in paragraph 5mean?
A.At thesamefrequency. B. In closecooperation.
C.With thesamebehavior. . D. In similarcircumstances.
31.Whyis yawning contagious?
A. For protection of evolution. B. In pursuitof empathy.
C. In consequence oftiredness. D. In light ofconnection.

It’s like watching a rerun while you’re sleeping: Once again, you show up for a class not knowing there’s
atest, orlosecontrol ofyour car while driving, or get chased byashadowy figure.
Recurring dreams have a way of popping up again and again. Research has found that most recurring
dreams have a negative tone with themes often related to helplessness, failure, or being chased. But
sometimes they can have positive themes, such as discovering a new room in your home or excelling at an
activity likeskiing.

Sometimes these recurring dream themes may feel random. Other times they may relate to
an experience from your past or to something that’s currently worrying you. Research has
found that people who feel ineffective in their lives and disconnected from others are more
likely to experience negative recurring dreams. “These dreams often correlate with periods of
heightened stress or significant life changes, suggesting that they may serve as indicators of
underlying anxiety,”says Deirdre Barrett, a dream researcherat Harvard Medical School.
The content of the recurring dream can affect how you feel. Positive recurring dreams can
leave you feeling inspired, hopeful or delighted. Meanwhile, recurring dreams that are
upsetting can leave you with an emotional hangover the next day. “Recurring negative dreams
can cause significant emotional distress, leading to feelings of fear, anxiety, or helplessness
upon waking,” Barrett says, “This emotional remains can linger throughout the day, affecting
mood and mental focus.” If these distressing dreams occur frequently, these patterns can even
lead you to dread going to sleep, which can interfere with your overall sleep quality.
Fortunately, if negative recurring dreams persist, experts say a technique called
imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) can help. With IRT, the basic idea is to select an upsetting
dream, visualize the dream while you’re awake, change the narrative or outcome in some way,
then rehearse thenew dream inyour mindduring the day.
“Change it however feels right to you,” Brette says. “You might change everything or a
small detail or the ending. This has an empowering effect on people during the day and allows
you tohave somecontrol overwhat happens inyour dreams.”

A.Togive anegative toneto dreams.
B.Todirect focus to recurring dreams.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项
为多余选项。
You’re in the middle of the afternoon, eyelids heavy, focus slipping. You close your eyes
for half an hour and wake up feeling recharged. But later that night, you’re tossing and turninginbed, wondering why you can’t fall asleep. 36
Napping is a double-edged sword. Done right, it’s a powerful way to recharge the
brain, improve concentration, and support mental and physical health. Done wrong, it can
leave you foggy, disoriented, and struggling tofall asleep later. 37
Most people experience a natural decline in alertness in the early afternoon, typically
between 1 pm and 4 pm. This isn’t just due to a heavy lunch. 38 The early
afternoon period is part of this cycle, which is why so many people feel sleepy at that
time.
Studies suggest that a short nap during this period can help boost alertness, and
improve cognitive function without interfering with nighttime sleep. 39
Napping too long may result in waking up feeling worse than before. Once a nap extends
beyond 30 minutes, the brain transitions into slow-wave sleep, making it much harder to
wake up. And if a nap is taken too late in the day, it can make it harder to fall asleep at
night.
40 Keeping naps between 10 and 20 minutes prevents dizziness. The ideal
time is before 2 pm—napping too late can push back the body’s natural sleep schedule.
The best naps happen in a cool, dark, and quiet environment, similar to nighttime sleep
conditions.
A.That midday nap might bethereason.
B. But napping is notsuitable foreveryone.
C. But there’ssomething worth paying attention to.
D.Tonap effectively,timing and environment matter.
E. Ourinternal bodyclock creates cycles ofwakefulness and tiredness.

Eighth grade meant a new classroom and a new teacher, but I barely noticed the change. As far as I was
concerned, a classroom was a classroom. I longed to be outside, wandering around the hills of Tennessee,
where I grew up. My teachers didn't appreciate hidden caves, running streams and wild bears any more than
Iappreciated algebra, history and calligraphy. My report cards always included notes, like"Douglas needs to
apply himselfinstead ofstaring outthewindow."
My parents tried their best with me, but school hadn't been a big part of their lives either. Daddy left
after the third grade, Mama after the sixth. "He'll grow out of it," Daddy said when another teacher had
concerns about me being too much of a dreamer. "Our boy came along a hundred years too late," Daddy
said." If he'd been bornin1842,he would have fitright in."
The rugged(崎岖的) land, the wild life, the adventure — more for me to dream about while chained to
my eighth-grade desk. It seemed there were two kinds of people in the world: those who belonged in the
classroom and those who belonged in the mountains. The teacher, Miss Cook, seemed to know which one I
was and had put mefar away from thewindow.
"Douglas Clark." The sound of my name pulled me out of my daydreams. Miss Cook had appeared at
my side without my even knowing. "If this daydreaming continues, I'm going to have to pay a visit to your
parents," shesaid.
Igave her agrin. "If you ain't going to helpcook supper, you might as well not come," Isaid.
The class laughed, but Miss Cook did not. "That's very clever," she said. "I think you should stay after
school and share more ofyour cleverness."
I sighed. My joke was going to keep me where I didn't belong. That's the way it was with teachers. They
never missed achance toremind me ofthat.
As soon as the bell rang, I took out my notebook to get a head start on writing “I will not be clever in
class” 200 times. But Miss Cook had something else in mind. She called me to the front and told me to sit
facing her.
