While many teenage girls are busy with their nails and music, Faye Carey, a 16-year-old from Waikato,
devotes her time to helping abandoned dogs find new homes. She volunteers at her local Animal Control branch
and has set up a Facebook page to advertise dogs in need of adoption.
Faye’s journey began during her work experience week at Animal Control. “I picked up a puppy (小狗) on my
first day, and he was still there on my last day. I felt so sorry for him,” she recalls. She decided to advertise the
puppy on TradeMe, which led to him finding a loving home in Auckland. Inspired, Faye created a Facebook page
advertising puppies and dogs that needed to be adopted.
Her page now has nearly 30,000 likes. To date, Faye has successfully rehomed over 60 dogs. “Her efforts take
a lot of pressure off the shelter,” says Vaughan Oliver, an Animal Control officer. “She presents our dogs in the best
light, giving them a second chance at life.”
Every Friday, Faye volunteers at Animal Control, grooming (梳理) puppies and photographing them for her
Facebook page. She also spends several hours each night arranging viewings, setting up adoptions, and replying to
emails. It can be stressful to balance this with school assignments and household duties, but Faye is passionate
about her work. “It’s rewarding and makes it all worthwhile,” she says.
The shelter receives up to 20 new dogs each week, mostly surrendered by owners who can’t care for them
anymore. With Faye’s help, these dogs often find suitable homes quickly. “She restores my faith in the community,”

Despite still being in high school, Faye hopes to pursue a career in Animal Control. “I enjoy working with
people and making a difference,” she says. Animal Control is grateful for her contribution. “We’re lucky to have

Cockatoos are known for their intelligence and problem-solving abilities. Unlike crows, they have strong
beaks (喙), which help them tackle complex challenges. In the past, scientists observed them opening heavy trash
can covers to find food.
In 2018 Dr. Barbara Klump noticed a cockatoo drinking from a public drinking fountain. She thought
someone had left the water running by mistake. But after looking at a video, she realized that the bird was actually
turning on the fountain by itself.
Dr. Klump and her team decided to study the cockatoos more closely. They labeled 24 cockatoos and set up
two cameras near a drinking fountain that the birds used often. The cameras recorded 14 hours of video over 44
days and gained 525 instances of the birds using the fountain.
The study found that about 70% of the birds made efforts to use the fountain. Each bird used at least one foot

would drink.
“It’s a bit of an awkward body position they have to hold,” said Lucy Aplin, one of the scientists involved in
the study. “The birds only got water in about 41% of their efforts to use the fountain. They had an especially hard
time when they were in a hurry or when other cockatoos were trying to use the fountain at the same time.”
The scientists aren’t exactly sure why the cockatoos started using the drinking fountains. They say one
possible reason is that the clean water tastes better to them than water from a stream. Another possibility is that
drinking from the fountain feels safer, since it makes it easier to keep an eye out for birds that might attack them,
like eagles. Dr. Klump noted the birds might simply enjoy the challenge of making the fountain work. “If… you’re
not dying of thirst,” she says, “Then why not do something you enjoy?”

Having nightmares (噩梦) on a weekly basis seems to speed up aging and may increase the risk of early death,
according to a study by Abidemi Otaiku at Imperial College London. Otaiku and his colleagues analyzed data from
over 183,000 adults aged 26 to 86 who had participated in several studies. At the start, participants reported their
nightmare frequency, and were subsequently tracked for up to 19 years.
The research revealed that those with weekly nightmares were more than three times as likely to die before
第 6页/共 12页reaching 70 compared to those who rarely or never had nightmares. Otaiku emphasized a clear link between
nightmare frequency and premature death, noting it was a stronger predictor than smoking, overweight, poor diet,
or lack of physical activity. He is set to present these findings at the European Academy of Neurology Congress in
2025.
To assess the participants’ biological age, the team measured telomere (端粒) length, which shortens with each
cell division and is associated with premature aging. The study also included data from about 2,400 children aged 8
to 10, whose nightmare frequency was reported by their parents. Adults’ biological age was further evaluated using
epigenetic clocks (表观遗传时钟).
Otaiku found a consistent association between frequent nightmares and sped-up aging. Children with more
frequent nightmares had shorter telomeres, indicating faster cellular aging. In adults, this sped-up biological aging
accounted for about 40% of the increased death risk.
Otaiku suggested two possible reasons for this association. First, nightmares raise stress hormone cortisol
levels, linked to faster cellular aging. Second, disturbed sleep impacts the body’s nightly cellular repair processes,
increasing the risk of various medical conditions, including heart disease.
Otaiku advised simple steps to avoid regular nightmares, such as avoiding scary movies and seeking treatment
for anxiety. Guy Leschziner from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust highlighted the biological
reasonableness of the findings but stressed the need for more research to establish causality, as nightmares could be
associated with other age-related medical conditions and medications.
