Students work in teams of four to seven, guided by a teacher as their advisor (顾问). Together, they learn about teamwork, communication, risk, companies and industry analysis and many other important aspects of investing. Teams examine a brief case study featuring a potential client and are tasked with working closely to meet that client’s long term investment goals. Equipped with an approved stock list and the Wharton Investment Simulator (WInS), which allows them to simulate (模拟) stock trading, students develop an investment strategy, analyze sectors and companies, and build a portfolio (投资组合) using $ 100 ,000 in virtual cash provided by WInS over the course of 10 weeks. Winners are selected on the strength of their team strategies, not on the growth of their portfolios. Results Final reports are reviewed by a team of judges, who select 50 semi-finalist teams. Those teams are invited to present their strategies to a panel of expert judges at the virtual semifinals. The top 10 teams from the semifinals move on to the final of the competition, the Global Finale, at Wharton in Philadelphia. Please Remember Once advisors register for the competition, they will receive a confirmation email with instructions to set up their student team accounts on WInS, our trading platform. I feel it the most strongly when I’m worried about my health or my daughter’s health. I feel an unusual sensation and all of a sudden: panic! My worries are not limited to health concerns though, and they go in the direction of anxiety about the future of the world, worries about my finances, and fears that I’m not good enough. Let me go back a few decades, back to when anxiety wasn’t part of my life. When I was a child, I loved art. I drew and I colored because that’s what I enjoyed. I went to college to become an art teacher. When I finished school in May of 2001, I had a part-time design job, and after the event of September 11th, 2001, I knew I needed to travel, to get out of the safe life I was living in my hometown. That’s when my creative practices fell by the wayside. Luckily, after the birth of my daughter in 2014, the desire to create came back. At first, I was using a tiny corner of a bedroom in our rental house to paint. Eventually we bought a house, and I had the space to spread out, ready to paint whenever the urge struck. That’s when I started noticing something important: Painting stilled me in a way that nothing else did. It eased my fears and anxieties in a way other practices (deep breathing, etc) did not, at least not as consistently. When anxious thoughts start, I know what to do. I head into my studio, grab some materials, and start creating. Soon enough, the worries are gone and instead my mind is quiet. I think the reason why painting is so helpful for my anxiety is that, in order for me to be anxious, I have to be worrying about the future and what it holds. When I’m doing an activity that requires my full concentration, I have to be in the moment. It doesn’t matter if you’re artistic. The only thing that matters is finding a way to be here, in the now, instead of in the unknowable future. 4. Which of the following best describes the author in paragraph 1? A. Cautious. B. Impatient. C. Carefree. D. Insecure. 5. Why did the author give up on art temporarily? A. Because her daughter was born. B. Because she couldn’t make a living. C. Because some big event happened. D. Because she was busy with her study. 6. How does painting ease the author’s fears and anxieties? A. Painting makes her stay in a place. B. Colors of painting calm her down. C. Painting makes less room for worries. D. Painting is a very creative activity. 7. What does the story mainly tell us? A. What is important is to seize the moment. B. Anxiety may be beneficial to life at times. C. It is necessary to learn some art in childhood. D. Painting is the best way to ease people’s mind. D 5. C 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Anxiety has followed me around like a lost dog looking for a bone for years now. I feel it the most strongly when I’m worried about my health or my daughter’s health. My worries are not limited to health concerns though, and they go in the direction of anxiety about the future of the world, worries about my finances, and fears that I’m not good enough.(多年来,焦虑就像一只寻找骨头的迷路狗一样跟着我。当我担 心自己或女儿的健康时,我感受最深。然而,我的担忧并不仅限于健康问题,还包括对世界未来的焦虑、 对财务状况的担忧,以及担心自己不够好)”可知,作者多年来一直被焦虑所困扰,担心自己和女儿的健康, 以及对未来的担忧等,说明作者感到不安全。由此可推断出,作者在第一段中给人的印象是“不安全的 (Insecure)”。故选D项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“When I finished school in May of 2001, I had a part-time design job, and after the event of September 11th, 2001, I knew I needed to travel, to get out of the safe life I was living in my hometown. 根据第三段“That’s when I started noticing something important: Painting stilled me in a way that nothing else did. It eased my fears and anxieties in a way other practices (deep breathing, etc) did not, at least not as consistently. When anxious thoughts start, I know what to do. I head into my studio, grab some materials, and start creating. Soon enough, the worries are gone and instead my mind is quiet.(就在那时,我开始注意到一件重要的 事情:绘画以一种其他任何方式都无法做到的方式让我平静下来。 通读全文,尤其结合最后一段“I think the reason why painting is so helpful for my anxiety is that, in order for me to be anxious, I have to be worrying about the future and what it holds. When I’m doing an activity that requires my full concentration, I have to be in the moment. It doesn’t matter if you’re artistic. The only thing that matters is finding a way to be here, in the now, instead of in the unknowable future.(我认为绘画对我的 焦虑如此有帮助的原因是,为了让我焦虑,我必须担心未来和它所带来的东西。当我做一件需要全神贯注 的事情时,我必须活在当下。你是否有艺术天赋并不重要。唯一重要的是找到一种方法,活在现在,而不 是不可知的未来)”可知,作者认为绘画对她的焦虑有帮助,因为当她全神贯注于绘画时,她必须活在当下, 而不是担心未来。由此可知,文章通过讲述作者通过绘画来缓解焦虑和担忧的经历,强调了活在当下的重 要性。故选A项。 C The invasive (入侵的) species, also called introduced species or foreign species, is any nonnative species that significantly changes or damages the ecosystem it invades. Such species may arrive in new areas through natural migration, but they are often introduced by the activities of other species. Human activities, such as those involved in global commerce and the pet trade, are considered to be the most common ways in which invasive plants, animals, microbes, and other organisms are transported to new habitats. Most introduced species do not survive extended periods in new habitats, because they do not possess the necessary adaptations to adjust to the challenges posed by their new surroundings. Some introduced species may become invasive when they possess a built-in competitive advantage over native species in invaded areas. They change native food chains and in some cases even get to the top of the food chains, which means the ecosystem lacks natural enemy capable of keeping them in check. Under these circumstances, new arrivals can get the chance to reproduce in large numbers. The ecological damage that tends to follow such invasions often reduces the ecosystem’s biodiversity and causes economic harm to people who depend on the ecosystem’s biological resources. Invasive species may be so good at catching preys that victim populations decline over time, and many victim species die out in the affected ecosystem. Other invasive species, in contrast, may prevent native species from obtaining food, living space, or other resources. Over time, invasive species can effectively replace native ones, often forcing the localized extinction of many native Invasive plants and animals may also serve as disease carriers that spread parasites (寄生虫) and viruses that may further do harm to the invaded area. 8. How do introduced species mainly travel to a new place? A. Through natural reproduction. B. Through natural migration. C. Through human activities. D. Though social interactions. 9. What happens to most introduced species in new habitats? A. They become extinct worldwide. B. They survive from any challenges. C. They dominate the new world. D. They die off in a short period. 10. What does the underlined word “preys” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Creatures that are hunted and eaten. B. Species that die out in a new place. C. Species at the top of food chains. D. Creatures at the bottom of food chains. 11. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Invasive Species Around the World B. Invasive Species and Their Impact C. The Ways Invasive Species Spread D. The Classification of Introduced Species 【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第一段“Human activities, such as those involved in global commerce and the pet trade, are considered to be the most common ways in which invasive plants, animals, microbes, and other organisms are transported to new habitats.(人类活动,例如涉及全球商业和宠物贸易的活动,被认为是入侵植物、动物、微 生物和其他生物被转移到新栖息地的最常见方式)”可知,引进的物种主要是通过人类活动传播到一个新的 地方,故选C。 根据第二段的“Most introduced species do not survive extended periods in new habitats, because they do not possess the necessary adaptations to adjust to the challenges posed by their new surroundings.(大多数 引进的物种不能在新的栖息地长时间生存,因为它们没有必要的适应能力来适应新环境带来的挑战)”可知, 进入新栖息地的大多数引进物种会在短时间内死亡。 根据划线词上文“Invasive species may be so good at catching(入侵物种可能非常善于捕捉)”和 下文定语从句“that victim populations decline over time, and many victim species die out in the affected ecosystem.(随着时间的推移,受害物种数量减少,许多受害物种在受影响的生态系统中灭绝)”可知,preys 指的是被猎杀和吃掉的生物。故选A。 根据第一段的“The invasive (入侵的) species, also called introduced species or foreign species, is any nonnative species that significantly changes or damages the ecosystem it invades.(入侵物种,也被称为引进 物种或外来物种,是任何非本地物种显著改变或破坏其入侵的生态系统)”和第二段的“They change native food chains and in some cases even get to the top of the food chains, which means the ecosystem lacks natural enemy capable of keeping them in check.(它们改变了当地的食物链,在某些情况下甚至到达了食物链的顶端, 这意味着生态系统缺乏能够控制它们的天敌)”及第三段的“The ecological damage that tends to follow such invasions often reduces the ecosystem’s biodiversity and causes economic harm to people who depend on the ecosystem’s biological resources.(这种入侵往往会造成生态破坏,往往会减少生态系统的生物多样性,并对 依赖生态系统生物资源的人们造成经济损害)”可知,本文主要讲的是外来物种的定义及其对新环境的影响。 B。 D In the midst of an already record-breaking heat wave, Phoenix, Arizona, set a particularly eye-popping record: the temperature only dropped to 97 degrees Fahrenheit overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, setting an all- time record high for a nighttime low. When temperatures stay high overnight, they place a particularly heavy burden on the body, raising the risk of heat illness and death. The U.S. —and the world—has seen a spate of extreme heat so far this year, including the planet’s hottest-ever June and hottest week on record during the first week of July. Rising global temperatures from burning fossil fuels are the main driver of more frequent and more intense heat waves. And an El Niño event is also boosting global temperatures this year. A heat dome has been in place for weeks over the U.S. Southwest and Texas, and it has fueled many heat records. Phoenix has now seen 20 days in a row with a daytime high of 110 degrees F or higher, a record that is likely to continue for several more days. A heat dome is an area of high pressure that parks over a region. High- pressure ridges, as they are also called, feature sinking air, which compresses and heats up. These ridges’ typical clear skies also allow the sun’s rays to beat down on the ground, further raising temperatures. Prolonged heat extremes pose a major public health threat because heat is the number-one weather-related 第9页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司killer in the U.S.; it causes more human deaths than hurricanes, tornadoes and floods combined. Heat can cause dehydration, which leads the blood to thicken and makes the heart pump harder. That organ and others can be damaged by too much exposure to heat. The soaring, triple-digit high daily temperatures grab the headlines, and they definitely are a concern—but when temperatures only drop into the 80s and 90s at night, the body doesn’t get a chance to cool down. This is particularly a concern for those who lack air-conditioning, including unhoused populations. And heat is especially a health risk for the very young, the elderly and those with preexisting health conditions such as asthma and heart disease. 12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs? A. Extreme temperatures can cause damage to our hearts. . B Burning fossil fuels contributes to the hottest-ever June and July. C. El Nino is the dominant cause of soaring global temperature. D. The temperature at night has reached a record high in Phoenix, Arizona. 13. What is a heat dome according to the passage? A. It’s a weather phenomenon that contributes to high temperatures. B. It’s a peak that the low pressure should reach. C. It’s the damage caused by too much exposure to heat. D. It’s the extra heat trapped in the sinking air. 14. According to the passage, what’s the influence high overnight temperature has on humans? A. It is the top one killer in America. B. Exposure to heat contributes to heart diseases. C. Human organs might be impaired. D. People accommodate to 80s and 90s Fahrenheit at night. 15. What’s the passage mainly talking about? A. Soaring temperatures are hitting the headlines. B. Anew eye popping overnight low record is set. C. Hot overnight temperatures threaten human health. D. Global heat waves are causing concerns. D 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第一段中“In the midst of an already record-breaking heat wave, Phoenix, Arizona, set a particularly eye-popping record: the temperature only dropped to 97 degrees Fahrenheit overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, setting an all-time record high for a nighttime low.”(在已经破纪录的热浪中,亚利桑那州凤 第10页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司凰城创造了一个特别令人瞠目结舌的纪录:周二至周三夜间,气温仅降至华氏97度,创下了夜间最低气温 的历史最高纪录。) 根据第三段中“A heat dome is an area of high pressure that parks over a region. High-pressure ridges, as they are also called, feature sinking air, which compresses and heats up. Especially it was a beach party. It had been almost the only thing my friends had been talking about for the last couple of weeks. But My mom had said no. The more desperately I pleaded her case, the more forcefully my mother said no. “I don’t care who’s going,” said coldly my mother, “you are not going.” I was heartbroken. This was my best friend’s party. Sunday dinner came around and my grandmother joined the family for the meal. Gran noticed my depression but didn’t say a word. It was my turn to wash up and Gran said, “Let me help you.” “What’s up?” asked Gran as I dumped the dishes into the foaming water. Gran wiped a plate with a tea towel. “Mom won’t let me go to my best friend’s party.” I said sadly. “Has mom explained why she doesn’t want you to go?” asked Gran. “No.” I replied. “Then for a moment, put yourself in her position.” said Gran. “If you were mom, what would your objections be?” I hadn’t stopped to think about my mom’s side. “Well,” I answered, “it’s a beach party. Maybe she doesn’t trust us or thinks we’ll get into trouble.” “Are there going to be any adults there?” asked Gran. “No,” I said, “who wants their parents hanging around when you’re trying to have fun?” “Might it just be,” said Gran, “your mother doesn’t want anything unfortunate to happen to you.”“Nothing will happen.” I objected. “Maybe you’re right,” said Gran, “but maybe mom’s worried in case it could.” Gran looked at me gently, seeming to expect my agreement. For a minute or so, I kept silent, pondering for a while about my eagerness for the party. “Maybe, you are right, however, is there no hope?” I inquired. “Not necessarily.” answered Gran, lost in thought. Paragraph 1: “Then maybe think of a compromise.” suggested Gran. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The long-awaited beach party finally came. 第20页/共22页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】“Then maybe think of a compromise.” suggested Gran. But I sobbed uncontrollably and couldn’t say a word. “Well, if you could let me go with you, I’d say yes.” My mom added. I wasn’t fond of my mom hanging around like a bodyguard, but to get to the party I had to compromise. “I suppose your mother won’t disturb your party, will she?” Gran looked at mom with a kind smile. “Well, I promise I won’t.” Mom finally gave in to me. My mood gradually improved. I ran to my grandmother and gave her a big hug. I was looking forward to the wonderful party desperately. The long-awaited beach party finally came. I made it at the beach with my mom. At a tree near the destination, mom stopped suddenly, taking out a red mat to sit on and signaling to me to join my friends. I rushed for the crowd. Joyful and excited, we sang, danced and chatted. Occasionally, the red mat in the near distance caught my eye. Mom held a book, leaning against the tree. The moment my eye fell on her, a wave of appreciation surged through me. It became dark when the party was over. I said goodbye to my friends and turned to mom. Under the tree sat mom waiting patiently. Tears of happiness blurring my eyes, I took her hand tightly, heading home. ③回家:head home/go home 情绪类 ①高兴的:joyful/delighted ②兴奋的:excited/thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1] Well, if you could let me go with you, I’d say yes.(由if引导的条件状语从句) [高分句型2] The moment my eye fell on her, a wave of appreciation surged through me.
