Bob Cheek grew up on his parents farm in northern Tasmania and became a
professional Australian rules football player. While many of his footballing
peers went into running pubs, he was more interested in fitness, and invested in
gyms “with varying degrees of success”.
He borrowed money to put into opening his first 24-hour gym in Hobart,
Tasmanias capital. “It was a risk. If it hadnt worked out, I probably would
have lost my house and everything else.” It was a struggle at first, he says, to
get the local government officials to agree to it. “Twenty-four-hour gyms were
unknown. They thought they were going to be the headquarters for drug
distribution and murders. They couldnt believe that people were going to go in
at night and there would be no supervision (监管).”
The first opened in March 2009.It was far cheaper than most gyms and
appealed to a wider range of people, including those who worked shifts and wanted
to exercise at less common times. 700 people joined before it even opened. He
built more in Tasmania, usually taking over old video rental shops, which had gone
out of business.
Cheek ended up owning 37 gyms across Australia, with plans to move into
south-east Asia. Most of the members were under 40, and he says “it kept me
学科网(北京)股份有限公司young, too, being involved with all these younger people coming in. Gyms are the
new meeting places for young people. In my day, everyone went to the pub; now they
go to the gym. It was great seeing all these young people getting fit and having
a good time, and older people as well.”
“It gave me a new lease of life,” he says. “My life has got better as
its gone on: My 60s were one of the best decades of my life, and I think my 70s
are even better. I know health can have a big say in that, but for me it was like
a magic carpet ride, flying into my 60s. I didnt even feel it—I felt like I
was 35 again—and thats about having a sense of purpose, building something and
helping people. I worked really hard, but I loved it.”
24.What was the barrier to Cheeks opening of his first 24-hour gym?
A.Lacking fund. B.Getting government approval.
C.Making profits. D.Addressing security issues.

C.The curiosity about novelty. D.The shift in their way of life.
27.What does running gyms bring Cheek?
A.A great wealth. B.A meaningful life.
C.A virtual world. D.A heavy burden.

Allowing women to give birth in hospital with their pet dog by their side
could make them less anxious, one of the first women to use a “birth dog” has
said.
Charlotte Beard, 24, who suffers from non-epileptic seizures, was supported
through her 50-hour labour by her aid pet Flump, who is trained to detect
seizures before they happen.
Flump was prepared for the birth by being played audio tracks of babies
crying at home and being introduced to staff at the maternity ward (产房) in
Poole hospital. Beard joked. “He was visiting the maternity hospital on a very
regular basis, getting to know staff, getting to know the different rooms and the
setups.”
It is a legal requirement that assistance dogs are allowed into hospitals,
but Beard said a lot of hospitals were not aware of this.
“It would have caused high levels of anxiety if Flump was not there,” she
said. “I would have certainly been more concerned about my safety.”
学科网(北京)股份有限公司“I am not suggesting that if I were to have a seizure, staff would not have
been able to look after me. But no staff member can detect beforehand whether you
are going to have a seizure or not. That is something that Flump can do that
nobody else can, and it gives them such valuable time to make sure that I am safe
and have the right support in place before it happens. Prevention is always much
better than treatment.”
Beard got Flump at 10 weeks and has trained him since then. “From a human
standpoint I cannot help but think how lovely it is that Flump was there. He was
one of the first to see Alfie,” Beard said. “Being present there from the birth
and meeting Alfie within moments of him being born, whether it has increased the
bond or not, it was such a lovely experience for everyone. Flump was absolutely
besotted (痴恋) with Alfie from the moment he first saw him.”
28.Why did Beard have an assistance pet present during birth?
A.To cure her disease. B.To monitor the doctors.
C.To ease her anxiety. D.To keep the door.
29.What was the assistance dog trained to do before doing the job?
A.Understand human voices. B.Get familiarized with the hospital.
C.Play music for babies. D.Learn about medical devices.
30.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 6 refer to?
A.Detecting the disease. B.Medical treatment.
C.Looking after the patient. D.A seizure.
31.What does Beard think of future bond between the dog and her son?
A.It will be close. B.It will be tense.
C.It needs improving. D.It is hard to say.
D
Even tree-planting can increase health risks to local human populations if
it focuses too narrowly on a small number of species, as is often the case in
commercial forests. Outbreaks of infectious diseases are more likely in areas of
monoculture plantations, according to a new study.
The researchers of the study said this was because diseases are filtered
(过滤) and blocked by a range of predators (食肉动物) and habitats in a healthy,
biodiverse forest. When this is replaced by a palm oil plantation or soy fields,
the specialist species die off, leaving generalists such as rats and mosquitoes
to thrive (繁殖) and spread pathogens across human and non-human habitats. The
net result is a loss of natural disease regulation.
The researchers examined the correlation between trends for forest cover,
plantations, population and disease around the globe using statistics from
international institutions such as the World Health Organization and the Food and
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Agricultural Organization. Over the period of study from 1990 to 2016, this
covered 3,884 outbreaks of 116 diseases that crossed the species barrier and 1,996
outbreaks of 69 vector-borne infectious diseases, mostly carried by mosquitoes,
ticks or flies.
The new study adds to a growing body of evidence that viruses are more
likely to transfer to humans or animals if they live in or near human-disturbed
ecosystems. This is shaped by trade patterns and consumer behaviour. A quarter of
global forest loss is driven by the production of commodities such as beef, soy,
palm oil and wood fibre.
Morand, lead-author of the study, said his study showed that disease risks
need to be added to risk-benefit analysis of new projects. “We should take the
costs of public health into account when considering new plantations. The risks
are first to local people, but then worldwide because we have seen with Covid how
quickly diseases can spread.”
Morand is now working on a more detailed study that will use satellite
analysis of forest cover to examine links with disease. With more information, he
believes it may be possible to predict future outbreaks and to work with local
communities to build ecologically diverse and economically productive landscapes
that reduce the risks.
32.Why are outbreaks of infectious diseases more likely in areas of monoculture
plantations?
A.The specialist species are wiped out by their predators.
B.Biodiversity decline destroys natural disease regulation.
C.Local human populations have no knowledge of health risks.
D.Commercial forests provide food for disease-carrying insects.
33.How did the researchers get their findings?
A.By conducting data analysis. B.By referring to another study.
C.By making field investigation. D.By consulting authoritative agencies.
34.What does Morand intend to do by his words in paragraph 5?
A.Criticize policy-makers. B.Offer a solution to Covid.
C.Make a suggestion. D.Support evidence for her findings.
35.What does the last paragraph talk about concerning Morand-led study?
A.Its theoretical basis. B.Its appeal to the public.
C.Expectations for future studies. D.Researchers with new perspectives.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Im from the fishing town of Kinsale, in Ireland. Life is pretty good
there, but Dubai caught my attention when I was 18.I moved there myself 10 years
ago as a 30-year-old film-maker. Its been a wild ride, full of chaos and wonder.
My wife, Christine, lives here with me; when her sister Angela came to visit
in April this year, the three of us set off in my pickup truck. It was a
cloudless day, touching 40 ℃. The heat and humidity were violent, so we had to
sightsee from the car.
We took the scenic route between Dubai and Ras al-Khaimah, a charming city
in the north. A year earlier, while off-roading with a friend, I got stuck at a
water crossing there, at the only inlet on the coast, where the sea flows into a
swampy lagoon (咸水湖). I had to be rescued, and learned how quickly the tide (潮
水) could come in.
Christine spotted what looked like the Loch Ness monster stuck in the sand.
We decided to investigate and drove up to where the sand met the lagoon. It was a
camel, not moving.
Since relocating here, I have always kept a shovel, rope, torches and knives
in my car—getting stuck in the desert can be debilitating (耗费体力的).
I got out my shovel and approached the camel. It was a female; we nicknamed
her Stucky. It looked as if she had been trapped for hours—she was in quite deep.
Ive been around camels a lot in Dubai; they are massive. They can be friendly,
but they can also be fierce. I approached Stucky slowly and started to gently dig
away the sand around her. I kept patting her. I knew if she swung her head around
quickly, she could injure herself, or me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Christine filmed my rescue attempt and posted photos on social media.
Luckily, at that point, a pickup arrived carrying 7 guys with all sorts of
apparatus(装备).

Summer Day Care Programmes in My Community
To provide both enrichment and child care, my community organized a series of activities
during the summer holidays.
School children were fully immersed in the extracurricular courses, ranging from judo,
baking, music and chess to computer programming, which were on offer for students attending day
care programs during summer vacation. The kids ran toward each other with open arms in the
playground, beautiful melodies float out of the classrooms, and the whole classroom was
enveloped by the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked cookies.
The programmes have relieved burden for both parents and children, and has been well-
received.
第二节
Christine filmed my rescue attempt and posted photos on social media. Angela gave Stucky
water. I focused on digging out her back legs. When I tried to wipe the sweat from my eyes, I
would get sand in them. An hour later, we still werent making much progress—whenever we
nearly freed a leg, which took about 20 minutes, she would get sucked back into the sand. And
the more she struggled to get free, the more stuck she became. We were worried it would get
dark and the tide would come in.
Luckily, at that point, a pickup arrived carrying 7 guys with all sorts of apparatus (装
备). Someone saw posted photos of the camel rescue on social media. Word then quickly spread
to the small farms a few kilometres away. They joined in and worked super-hard. Everyone was
working on all four of the camels legs at the same time, using different techniques. When we
finally got her out, Stuckys legs were effectively dead. Then the guys massaged her legs to
