My brother and I were driving home together and became absorbed in a conversation. Because of this, my
brother took a wrong turn.
第3页/共16页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Unluckily, the wrong turn took us towards a bridge and we had no way to turn back. Unwillingly, my brother
paid the bridge toll(费) and drove on. He was clearly annoyed about the mistake and the needless waste of $4.
We eventually reached an exit slip-way and, as we took it, my brother noticed a beat-up black Mustang pulled
over to the side of the road. A young guy was standing nearby trying to phone someone. I was busy trying to figure
out which way we went next but my brother pulled over and asked the guy if he needed any help. And he did. He
had a flat tire and needed a wrench(扳手) to get it off.
My brother gave him a wrench, and then offered to help him change the flat. We started getting to know the
young man from a rough neighborhood nearby. He said this has been a bad week for him; earlier he had gotten into
a minor car accident, and now this flat on his way home from work. But he called us, “A breath of fresh air,” and
kept thanking us because he really would have been stuck if we hadn't come along. After we had finished the job,
he thanked us again and pulled out $20 and tried to give it to us. “No,” I said. “We were never supposed to even get
on that bridge and took a wrong turn. But now we know why we did. Thank you for turning our mistake into an
opportunity to serve.”
What I loved most was watching my brother throughout this process. He was able to turn his agitation for the
mistake into positive energy and managed to see a chance to help even in an otherwise negative situation, which
can only come from a calm mind and an open heart. That was the bridge we were meant to cross.
4. Why did the young guy call the author and the brother “A breath of fresh air”?
A. Because they rejected his money. B. Because they also got on that bridge.
C. Because they offered a chance to serve D. Because they turned up when he needed help
5. What does the underlined word “agitation” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Fright. B. Anxiety. C. Excitement. D. Embarrassment.
6. What impressed the author most in the experience?
.
A The brother's calmness and bravery. B. The cooperation in getting the flat tire off.
C. The young guy's generosity and politeness. D. The brother's positive attitude and open heart
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Bridge We Were Meant To Cross B. A Terrible Experience We Experienced
C. My Brother Who Took A Wrong Turn D. A Young Guy We Were Grateful To

Every day, Americans throw away 500 million plastic straws (吸管), enough to circle the Earth twice, or fill
125 school buses.
Made from fossil fuels, they are almost never recycled because they’re too small and could be made from
several different types of plastic. They simply contribute to the big problem of plastic pollution; 8 million tons of
第4页/共16页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司plastic enters the oceans every year.
Plastic straws are now the target of a growing movement to reduce their use. One of such programs, Be Straw
Free was started in 2011 by Milo Cress, who was only 9 years old at the time. “I noticed that whenever I ordered a
drink at a restaurant, it would usually come with a straw in it, and I don’t usually need a straw,” he said.
“This seemed like a huge waste. Straws are made of oil, a precious resource. Is making single-use plastic
straws, which will be used for a matter of minutes before being thrown away, really what we want to do with this
resource?”
Cress began asking restaurants in Burlington, Vermont, where he lived then, to stop offering straws to
customers and make them optional instead. Many agreed and his request made ripples nationwide. He says that
restaurants that make the change report a reduction in the number of straws they use between 50 and 80%.
Some people use straws to reduce the damage of sugary or acidic drinks (酸性饮料) to their teeth, or due to
special requirements. “There are disabled people who write me to tell me they carry reusable straws with them —
many reusable straws even come with a carrying case (收纳盒),” said Cress. “There is reusable glass, bamboo, and
several other kinds of reusable straws.”
“I am not out to stop using straws. I think it’s much more effective to encourage people to make the choice not
to use them. Sometimes, forcing people to do things is not always the most effective way to make a change.” said
Cress.
8. How do the first two paragraphs stress the problem of plastic straws?
A. By comparison. B. By offering a research result.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing figures.
9. What do we know about Be Straw Free?
A. It has a history of more than 10 years.
B. It was the first campaign to reduce plastic straw.
C. It has turned into a global non-profit organization.
D. It was established by Cress working in a restaurant.
10. How did Cress help to reduce plastic straws?
A. By encouraging disabled people to stop using straws.
B. By asking restaurants to provide reusable straws.
C. By letting customers choose straws personally.
D. By forbidding using plastic straws at restaurants.
11. Which of the following statements will Cress agree with?
A. Reusable straws are less expensive than plastic ones.

C. Plastic straws should be replaced completely.
D. It’s illegal to produce straws using oil.

Listening to favorite songs could reduce people’s pain, according to a new study published in the journal
Frontiers in Pain Research.
The small study invited 63 young adults to bring two of their favorite songs, and the only requirement was that
they needed to be at least 3 minutes and 20 seconds long. One selection was their favorite music of all time, and the
other was the song they would bring with them on a desert island. The researchers also had the young adults pick
one of seven songs that the team considered relaxing and were unfamiliar to the study participants (参与者).
Each person joined a 7-minute experiment where they were guided to stare at a monitor screen while listening
to their favorite music, one of the seven relaxing instrumental songs (each of which lasted for 6 minutes and 40
seconds), or a mixture of both songs and the relaxing song chosen. The mixed music was a noisy mixture of all
three songs, cut into parts so that they lacked their original structure. One 7-minute experiment had people sitting in
silence. All the while, the researchers stuck a hot object — similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on your skin
— to the participants’ left inner forearms.
When rating their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their
favorite songs compared with hearing the unfamiliar relaxing song or silence. The mixed songs did not reduce pain
either, which the authors suggested was evidence of music being more than a distraction (分散注意力) from an
unpleasant experience.
After interviewing the participants about the song they brought and their rating of pain, the researchers found
people who listened to bittersweet and touching songs felt less pain than when they listened to songs with calming
or cheerful themes.
12. What do we know about the music used in the experiment?
A. The mixed music was similar to the original in structure.
B. The seven songs chosen were strange to the participants.
C. The participants’ favorite songs had the same context.
D. All the music was played on the monitor screen.
13. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. How long the participants listened to songs. B. How the experiment was carried out.
C. Why various songs were listened to. D. How different songs reduced pain.
14. Which music could reduce pain most according to the experiment?
第6页/共16页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司A. Bittersweet and moving songs. B. A mixture of different songs.
C. Songs with calming themes. D. Unfamiliar relaxing songs.
15. What’s the purpose of the article?
A. To stress people’s preference for music. B. To recommend different kinds of songs.
C. To explain why music can cure discases. D. To introduce the effect of music on people’s feeling.

Wolf! Hank thought. The boy stared out of the cabin (小木屋) window at the animal. It was sitting a stone’s
throw away in the moonlight. The wolf howling (嚎叫), Hank shook slightly. For the first time, he felt truly alone
in the mountains.
It had felt good to be allowed to come along with Dad. Dad was a scientist who studied wild animals. Two
days ago, they had moved into an empty cabin. Here, Dad would write a report about what he had found. But they
discovered that dozens and dozens of mice had taken over the cabin. The little creatures had gotten into the supplies
of dried food and ruined almost everything.
Now, because most of the food was gone, Dad had left to get new supplies from town and would be staying
overnight. Hank had insisted on staying behind.
The wolf howl sounding again, Hank opened the logbook to write about it, but his hand shook. Dad had never
mentioned having any trouble with wolves. Hank closed the logbook and put it on the table. Quickly he looked
around for something he could use as a weapon just in case. He grabbed a stick from the fireplace, went to the door,
and took a deep breath.
Then he opened the door, waved the stick, and shouted with all his might (强大力量): “Co away, wolf. Go
away!” Shocked, the wolf sprang (跳跃) and started running away. Hank closed the door, his heart pounding hard.
When he’d caught his breath, he turned back to the window. Oh, no! There was the wolf sitting right where it had
sat before.
Hank stared at the wolf. The wolf stared right back at him. Hank was staring into the eyes of a hunter. He
knew, like all creatures, the wolf needed to eat. Hank’s dad had said wolves play their part in the environment by
eating deer, rabbits, and other animals. But maybe, like the hungry mice that were running about Hank’s feet,
wolves go for any food they can find. Suddenly, Hank heard a squeaky (吱吱叫的) noise!

【答案】Dear Joe,
,
With the approaching of the English Arts Festival I’m writing to ask a favor of you to come and provide on-
site guidance during our rehearsal, which is scheduled in Room 322 at 7:00pm next Saturday evening.
All the students are currently devoted to the rehearsal of the dramas adapted from our textbook. Originating from
Shakespeare’s famous plays, our dramas need to truly reflect their contents, but we don’t know much about Middle
English which Shakespeare used in his works. That’s why we want you to give some guidance with your rich
knowledge reserves and cultural background. As non-native speakers, we are in desperate need of the on-site guidance
from someone like you, who has impressed us with profound knowledge and deep insight into the English literature.
Therefore I sincerely invite you to guide us in person.
We really need your help. Please reply as soon as possible.
Yours Sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Holding his breath, Hank raised his head to see. He found the wolf, howling wildly, was chasing some mice
in the moonlight. Letting out squeaky noises, the mice ran about on the grass aimlessly. Suddenly the hungry wolf
sprang up, catching a mouse. Sitting a stone’s throw away, it ate the mouse it captured. Running about its feet were
dozens of noisy mice. The wolf rose, ready to catch another mouse. Shocked, Hank turned back to the table for his
logbook.
Paragraph 2:
As the wolf sprang up and tried to catch another mouse, Hank opened the logbook again. His heart pounded
hard. Grabbing the pen, Hank quickly wrote what was happening outside the cabin. Another mouse caught, the wolf
swallowed it whole. The hunting over, the wolf ran away with its stomach filled. Closing the logbook, Hank took a
deep breath, feeling so good. It was the first time that he had stayed alone in the mountains to study wild animals.
