Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of
experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei
remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in
1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old
wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei
volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall
or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly
picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the
stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection
organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also
became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the
history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.”
Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and
thousands of guardians joined.
Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei
says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in
protecting it.”
4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall?
A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends.
C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers.
5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed.6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian?
A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous.
C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed.
7. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A lifelong guardian of the Great Wall. B. Villagers’ deep love for the Great Wall.
C. The progress in protecting the Great Wall. D. A practical Great Wall protection program.
C
Unclear guidelines for when to keep a child at home if they are sick might play a part in the nationwide
problem of students missing too much school.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization (组织) for doctors who treat children. It
suggests that children stay at home when there are signs of sickness like fever or when students are not well enough
to attend classes. But many schools go far beyond that, offering different signs of sickness that would stop parents
from sending their children to school.
Trenace has a five-year-old daughter who was sick a lot last year. The mother followed school guidelines and
kept her daughter home when she had a cough, painful throat, or fever. Near the end of the year, school officials
called her in to talk about why her daughter had missed so much school. “In the past, if the child didn’t have a
fever, then it’s okay to send them to school,” said the mother. “But now it’s like if they have a cough, you have to
keep them home. Which is it?”
Children who missed school a lot found it more difficult to catch up. Missing 10 percent or more of the school
year puts students at risk. Students who miss school also might miss meals, socializing with other students and
teachers, physical exercise, and health care services.
Recently, the state of California decided to change their stay-at-home guideline for the autumn. The new
guideline says children with low-level signs of sickness can come to school.
Noha Aboelata, who leads the Roots Health Centre in Oakland, California, said the change in guidance might
make a big difference. She hoped that parents and schools will learn about the new guidance and that students will
miss less school. “The most important place for our kids to be is school,” she said.
8. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To voice worries. B. To express thanks.
C. To offer a suggestion. D. To introduce the topic.
9 What can we infer about the health guidelines in each school?
A. They were difficult to follow. B. They were well received.C. They troubled many parents. D. They put teachers at risk.
10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about missing school?
A. Its lasting value. B. Its bad influence.
C. Its background. D. Its common cause.
11. What does Noha Aboelata say about the new rule?
A. It will play an active role. B. It will come to an end soon.
C. It will make no sense to kids. D. It will leave parents surprised.
D
In today’s digital age, there exists a phenomenon (现象) where excessive learning can lead to inaction, a state
of being overwhelmed by too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting extensive
research, diving deep into the subject. As you take in more information, it paradoxically (矛盾地) feels like your
understanding weakens. Each new concept (理念) or strategy reveals further layers, making the goal seem more
complex and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit (追求) of more information. Although there’s nothing
wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this effort gets in the way of practical application. If learning
continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to achieve your desired outcomes.
An alternative and more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and
doing. Gather essential information, then jump into action rapidly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is
often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical (理论的) knowledge alone
cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting
and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall
what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually grasped. This method is applicable to
goal achievement too. By taking action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually
move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s important not to let it become a barrier to action.
Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interplay of gathering knowledge
and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
12. What stops people from achieving the goal?
A. The distraction caused by unrelated tasks.B. The inability to find related information.
C. The confusion caused by the information.
D. The desire to learn basic concept or strategy.
13. What does the author try to advocate in paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Sticking to continuous learning. B. Taking practical action without delay.
C. Gaining as much knowledge as possible. D. Focusing on theoretical knowledge in study.
14. Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. To compare different learning styles.
B. To show the importance of making mistakes.
C. To stress the need for parental guidance.
D. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
15. What makes the best title for the passage?
A. The Balance of Learning and Doing. B. The Process of Accessing Information.
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge. D. The Significance of Hands-on Experience.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life in senior high schools can be exciting, but also tiring. ___16___ Therefore, it’s easy to forget things,
especially in the morning when you’re still a bit sleepy. How can you reduce stress levels and make sure you leave
home feeling unhurried and prepared? Here are some tips for creating a productive, focused and energizing
morning routine.
Prepare the night before
The best way to ensure your morning runs smoothly is to prepare for it the night before. ___17___ Select
books and check you have the essentials, like reading glasses. Lay out your uniform. And if you take a packed
lunch, check whether it’s ready.
___18___
Some people rise very easily, but others take more time to feel awake. Build extra time into your routine if you
find mornings hard. If you have an alarm clock, try to get up as soon as it goes off. Doing something right away can
help you feel awake. You could also do some stretches as you listen to a song.
Do essential tasks in order
There are a few things you need to do in the morning. To build a routine, it can be helpful to do these in the
same order each day. Examples are taking a shower, cleaning your teeth, dressing and checking your school bag. Ifyou’re forgetful, have a list pinned up so you can check things off as you go. ___19___
Eat a good breakfast
Not everyone feels hungry when they wake, but this changes when you start moving — such as walking to
school. After sleep, your body has been without food for a long time. The word “breakfast” reflects this — it’s a
meal you use to “break” your “fast” (a fast is a period of time where you don’t eat). ___20___ Foods like bread or
porridge provide energy. Have a drink, too.
A. Wake yourself your way.
B. Early to bed and early to rise.
C. Your brain can feel overloaded.
D. Soon it will become second nature.
E. Eating something tops up your fuel tank.
F. Skipping breakfast increases the risk of heart diseases.
G. Check your timetable and pack what you need for school.
