My eyes were fixed on the little screen whenever I walked down the street, had dinner with friends or lay in bed at night. Sometimes I had the uncomfortable feeling that this little machine had taken up too much of my time, and that I could have done something more meaningful than just looking at a tiny screen all day. Then the day came when I finally realized I had to make a change. Head down, eyes on my smartphone, I stepped into the road and a cars hot past, nearly knocking me off my feet! At that very moment, I made up my mind to spend a whole week without my smartphone. The first day was the hardest. I found myself at a loss, unsure of how to occupy my time. Then somehow I began to feel free. I finally picked up the classic novel I had always wanted to read and kept a journal of my feelings, thoughts and daily activities to see how much progress I was making. Best of all I began to appreciate the beauty in life with my own eyes, instead of through my smartphone camera. My offline relationships benefited as well. I went for a long walk with an old friend. Our wide-ranging conversation went so much deeper than brief texts ever could. I also made sure to spend more time with my parents. We went to the opera, played badminton, and visited museums. We had never felt closer to each other. By the end of the week, I almost did not want to turn my phone back on. Those seven days have given me a great appreciation for life beyond the screen. I cannot escape from the modern world, but I can cut back on the amount of time I spend on my smartphone every day, and I do. 4. What does the underlined word “captive” in paragraph 1 refer to? Challenging but meaningful. 7. Which is the possible title of this text? A. The Smartphone is Smart. B. Smartphone? No way! C. Smartphone: A Smart Choice? D. How to Live Without a Smartphone. C A team of researchers at ETH Zurich has the perfect long-lasting solution to our fog problem. They have developed a very thin and gold-based coating (涂层) that can turn sunlight into heat, which can be applied to glass and other surfaces to prevent them from fogging. The special coating selectively absorbs radiations from the sunlight and creates a heating effect that is powerful enough to keep fog away from the surface of an object. The coating basically employs heat to stop fogging. The coating absorbs a large part of the radiation, which causes it to heat up -by up to 8℃. Previously, products like anti-fogging sprays create a very thin film (膜) of water on the surface to remove fog. The problem with such surfaces is pollution. Along with water, the sprays also attract dirt, dust, oil, and various other dirty substances, and just a little dirt on the surface makes it useless. However, the new coating does not absorb water. Furthermore, the coating is significantly thinner, which makes it more transparent as well as flexible. It is heated passively and requires, during daytime, no additional energy source. Gold might be expensive, but the researchers stress that their coating requires so little that the material costs remain low. Their coating is produced with standardized procedures that can be easily scaled up, ensuring cost efficiency. However, although this product can work at very low levels of solar exposure, it does depend on a certain amount of light. The researchers will develop the coating further for other applications. In the process, they will examine whether other metals work just as well as gold. The researchers have already filed a patent. Hopefully, this groundbreaking product will soon be available on the market. 8. How does the new coating work? A. By cooling air away from the object. B. By reflecting sunlight selectively. C. By creating a thin film on the surface. D. By transforming sunlight into heat. 9. What is the weakness of previous anti-fogging products? A. They are too thin. B. They tend to get dusty. C. They are heated passively. D. They do not absorb water. 10. What do we know about the new coating? A. It is rather costly. B. It relies on sunlight to work. 第5页/共16页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. It is difficult to get the raw material. D. It occupies too much time to produce. 11. What will the researchers probably do next? A. Reduce the cost of the product. B. Promote the sales of the new coating. C. Put the product to use in more fields. D. Conduct a survey on the availability of the new coating. D There are some sounds most of us regard are annoying — the chewing of chips, the low noise of air conditioning or a screaming baby. These noises, for many people, act as a mere inconvenience that can distract them from the task at hand. However, there are some amongst us who have a much more severe response to these noises. Has a noise ever made you feel so angry that you could explode with rage? If the answer is yes, you may be suffering from misophonia (恐音症). The word “misophonia” literally means “a hatred of sound” and is sometimes called Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome. There are some experts who doubt the existence of the condition. However, for those who claim to suffer from it, the experience can be painful. Certain sounds could set off intense emotional or psychological (心理的) responses that may seem over the top compared with an on-sufferer’s complaints. The sound of people chewing their food could start sufferers’ anxiety, or make them feel panic. It may even activate their fight-or-flight response, making them want to run away. In extreme cases, that feeling of panic may result in intense anger and even end up expressing rage physically. Sadly, there’s no known cure. But cognitive (认知的) behavioural therapy and counselling could help sufferers put up with noises and manage the condition. According to James Cartreine, a clinical psychiatrist, the condition can lead to separation. Sufferers use coping strategies that include avoiding places with lots of noises, like restaurants, or moving away when they feel like raging against someone due to their breathing. , So the next time you see someone fly into a rage because of a sound that is driving them crazy, it may be due to a difficult condition they are trying to manage, and not just because they hate a certain sound. 12. How do many people react to annoying sounds? A. They become very angry. B. They scream at the sounds. C. They concentrate on the work. D. They consider them no big deal. 13. What can we infer from paragraph 2? A. Misophonia means sensitivity to all uncomfortable sounds. B. Sufferers hardly experience great pain. C. Some experts are uncertain whether there is misophonia. D. Non-sufferers don’t complain about the annoying sounds. 第6页/共16页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司14. What are sufferers unlikely to do with the annoying sounds? A. Avoid places with a lot of noises. B. Consider them as a minor inconvenience. C. Show their anger through their behaviour. D. Leave those who produce annoying sounds. 15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To introduce a physical condition-misophonia. B. To advise readers to mind their behaviour in public. C. To tell people to control their emotion in noisy places. D. To persuade people to get on with people with misophonia. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 Money habits are the small daily decisions we make that influence how we spend and save our money.____16____But with a little awareness and effort, we can make improvements that will help us achieve our financial goals. One afternoon, while wandering aimlessly through the town, James saw an old and dilapidated (破旧的) house. It was surrounded by at all broken fence covered in ivy, and the yard was a mess of overgrown weeds. The old man, Mr. Smith, had a reputation in the town for being bad-tempered and strange. He never seemed to mix with the neighbors, and many people avoided him. But James, with his young and open mind, saw something different in Mr. Smith. The old man reminded him of his grandfather. So, James thought this was just alonely man who needed a friend and he was willing to get to know Mr. Smith. James introduced himself and, despite Mr. Smith’s original coldness, they struck up a conversation. They only exchanged a few words that time. But in the following days, James often came to visit Mr. Smith and brought him some homemade cakes and fruits. They began to warm up as they learned more about each other. Over the next few weeks, James and Mr. Smith began to spend more time together. James helped clear the overgrown yard and repair the fence, while Mr. Smith shared stories of his past adventures.
