Now it’s the perfect time to teach kids about growing things. Try one or more of these plant experiments for
fun and learning.
*Color carnations (康乃馨)
Fill a glass with water and color the water. Add a white carnation stalk (茎) and watch the plant become
colorful as it “drinks” the colored water. This is a great, short experiment to show how plants take in water.
*Plant root vegetables
Find out how root vegetables form underground by planting them in a clear container. First, fill the bottom of
the container with small stones. Next, add potting soil and plant rot vegetable seeds, trying carrots or onions,
evenly. Keep the soil wet and enjoy watching the rot form. Best of all, when the vegetable is done growing, you can
eat it!
*Study speedy sunflowers
Sunflower seeds sprout (发芽) and grow quickly, making this the perfect flower for impatient children. These
seeds can be started just about anywhere, even in a paper coffee cup or yogurt container. Kids love seeing the plant
push its way out of the soil, wearing the seed’s outer part like a hat! Move your plant to a flower pot after it sprouts
to observe the lower as it forms.
*Make a grass basket
Grass is another seed that grows quickly. Make a living basket by lining a basket with plastic and filling it with
potting soil Put grass seeds on top and water them lightly every day.
Growing plants is a great way to bring some leaning—and a little sunshine—to your daily life. Try any of
these inexpensive garden experiments for a fun project this spring.
1. Which garden experiment will you choose to see how plants “drink” water?
A. Color carnations. B. Make a grass basket.
C. Plant root vegetables. D. Study speedy sunflowers.
2. What is special about the experiment of “Plant root vegetables”?
A. It has strict requirements for temperature. B. It offers you the tasty fruits of your labor.
C. It is prefect for impatient kids. D. It is boring to carry on.

When I lived in Prague in the Czech Republic, I often took weekend trips to explore the countryside of
neighboring cities. One particular weekend, I took a three-hour bus ride to visit a nearby city. Before I got off the
bus, I checked the schedule for the time to return to Prague; I was only planning a day trip and did not intend to
stay overnight.
After a delightful day of sightseeing, I made my way to the bus station to catch the 6: 15 bus back to Prague.
However, upon reaching the station, I discovered there was no queue for the bus. Despite the language barrier, I
managed to gather from gestures and expressions that the last bus of the day had already left at 5: 15. This caused a
serious problem for me.
About a month earlier, I had fallen victim to a pickpocketing (扒窃) incident, losing around 8100. To prevent a
similar occurrence, I only caried enough cash to cover my daily expenses. With only 9 crowns left in my pocket, I
thought if no hotel charged less than 9 crowns, spending the night on a park bench would be my only choice—an
uncomfortable idea for a man in his late 60s.
After careful consideration, I went into a hotel to try my luck. Naturally, I assumed it would cost more than 9
crowns. I approached the manager, shared my story with her, and made a request. I proposed that if I could spend
the night there, I would give her 9 crowns as payment and mail the remaining amount to her the next day. To my
great surprise, the manager said I was welcome to stay, and that she would accept what I had in my pocket as the
full payment for a room. Additionally, she offered me a nice meal for free.
Eventually, I spent the night in a clean and tastefully decorated room, not on a cold, hard park bench. Upon my
return to Prague, I wrote the manager a note of thanks for her kindness. She reminded me that kindness is an
international characteristic, and has no boundaries (边界) .
4. What was the author’s original plan for his weekend trip?
A. Exploring rural transportation tools. B. Going one-day countryside sightseeing.
C. Practicing speaking the Czech language. D. Enjoying local food and accommodation.
5. What problem did the author meet with during his trip?
A. Having his money stolen. B. Failing to find a good hotel.
C. Missing the last return bus. D. Finding it difficult to communicate.
6. What might the author think of the manager of the hotel?
A. Open-minded and sociable. B. Optimistic and confident.
第4页/共15页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. Generous and considerate. D. Hard-working and responsible.
7. What lesson can we possibly learn from the author’s experience?
A. Who laughs last laughs best. B. What goes around comes around
C. Emergencies come in all forms and times. D. Kindness goes beyond cultural boundaries.

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless society,
pocket money is going digital.
To reflect “the change”, many mobile budgeting (预算) apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as
GoHenry, Osper and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service to children, often for a monthly
fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children’s accounts, set limits and monitor transactions (交易).
Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a pre-paid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts (概念), such as budgeting, interest rates and income.
For example, the Swedish app Gimi—1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can put
money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a prepaid card that is currently available in Sweden
only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.
Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. “You don’t
become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It’s more about the attitude and
the relationship you have with parents’ money when you’re 6 to 12 years old,” he says.
But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking & Finance,
warms people that while digital tools can help, there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education.
The area should “have regular, designed classroom time and ideally should be taught as an independent subject”, she
says. “Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money.”
8. What do we know about Gimi?
A. It provides a prepaid card for free. B. It can be used only in Sweden now.
C. It pays children interest as they save. D. It can teach children concepts of money.
9. What does the underlined word “launched” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Introduced. B. Contributed. C. Conquered. D. Interrupted.
10. What do Catherine Winter’s words mean?
A. Digital tools can help a lot with finance.
B. Money management requires financial ability.
C. A regular classroom-based financial education is needed.
D. Children can get the most out of their money with the apps.

Running with a group has lots of benefits especially when running long distances. But group running also
requires that you follow some basic etiquette (礼仪) and behavior rules. Here’s advice on running etiquette for
group running.
Leave your headphones at home. Sure, music helps push some runners along. However, it’s antisocial to wear
headphones during a group run. It can also be dangerous because listening to music means you’ll be less aware of
your surroundings. ___12___
Don’t jingle (发出叮当声) . ___13___ But you can bet that it will annoy at least one person in your group.
You don’t want to become known as “The Annoying Loose Change Guy”.
Be prepared with what you need. ___14___ Carry your own water and food, as well as some cash or a credit
card, just in case you need it.
Don’t run without considering the safety of others. Not only is it rude to take over a path and block other
runners, walkers, or cyclists, but it can be a possible safety risk. To make other runners and cyclists easily pass,
make sure you’re running no more than two abreast (并排), especially on busy roads, sidewalks, or paths.
___15___ For example, run in a clockwise direction on a circular route.
___16___ Runners join groups for the social element, but that doesn’t mean they want to hear the same
person talk non-stop about their running achievements, injuries, or life problems during every run. Ask people,
especially the new members of the group, questions to give them a chance to speak.
A. Be silent sometimes.
B. Give advice to others.
C. You can’t know some group members very well.
D. Don’t expect to rely on other runners for supplies.
E. Running with coins or keys in your pocket may not bother you.
F. Be aware of any special rules for running in parks or on paths.
G. Besides, you won’t be able to hear instructions from other runners in your group.

Looking out of the window of our new house, I was impressed with the colorful leaves that had dropped onto
our yard from the neighbor’s tree. Then, I noticed an old gentleman raking ( 耙 ) in his yard. Feeling the coolness
of the fall, I came outside with my son Sam and started to rake leaves in our yard.
Just then, I saw the old man leave his house and get into his car. I waved happily at him, smiling, while he
simply gave me an icy look before turning his back. “That’s unfriendly,” Sam said.
Then two boys stopped by, saying they were our neighbors. They helped us rake our leaves, making a large
pile (堆) in our yard. While we were taking a rest, they warned us about “Grumpy (脾气坏的) Old Mr. Roberts”.
They told us they were walking to the school bus one day, and, on a whim ( 一时兴起) , they jumped into the
leaves that Grumpy Old Mr. Roberts had raked into a pile next to the bus pickup. The old man had hidden dog shit
in the leaves. “I guess he doesn't want anyone to jump into his leaves,” I said. Roling their eyes, they said, “He
doesn't want anyone in his life.”
After they left, I wondered how I would feel if I was old and alone. Sam and I decided to befriend Grumpy
Old Mr. Roberts. Carrying cookies, we went to visit him. We knocked twice and put smiles on our faces. “What do
you want?” he asked, as if we were selling him something. We introduced ourselves and offered him the cookies.
But he refused and closed his door.

【答案】Dear Miss Evans,
I’m Li Hua, monitor of Class Four, Grade Two, and I’m writing to express our thanks for the lecture on
English learning methods you delivered to us.
We benefited greatly from your lecture. To begin with, we’ve learned many special spoken expressions and the
cultural contexts behind them, which help us a lot in our communication in English. In addition, thanks to the

【答案】
I told him that we wouldn’t ask for money. Then he agreed. The neighbor boys came over just as we started
raking. Together, we finished Grumpy Old Mr. Roberts’ yard. Next, we raked it all into our yard to add to our leaf
pile, creating a large mountain of colorful leaves. The boys were exhausted and promised to come back the next
day when we were going to play in the leaves. The next day, the boys came to play with Sam. While I was cooking,
I heard noises from our yard.
I was amazed to see Grumpy Old Mr. Roberts pretending to swim in the leaves with the boys. I didn't know
when and how he joined the boys, yet I knew he was joyful. He and the boys were laughing so hard. It was on that
day that we said goodbye to Grumpy Old Mr. Roberts and hello to our neighbor Mr. Roberts. Gradually, Mr.
Roberts’ face lit up with more smiles and he became not just a friendly neighbor but a cherished member of our
community.
