On Monday, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, announced a piece of news: $1
billion was given by a former professor, Dr. Ruth Gottesman. This means so much to a lot of people.
The news brought tears of joy and cheers from the students as Dr. Gottesman announced her final decision to
make medical education free of charge.
The measure is expected to reduce the heavy financial (财务的) stress on students, as the Albert Einstein
College of Medicine had previously charged the students nearly $59,000 per year. The donation will not only cover
all education costs for new students starting in August but also provide some financial support for the outstanding
students who are in their final year.
Dr. Ruth Gottesman, now 93, has a close connection with the college, having begun her teaching career there
in 1968. Her gesture represents a lifelong commitment (奉献) to education and a firm belief in the impact of
medical research and training.
In an interview with a newspaper reporter, the former professor shared the inspiration behind the gift. Dr.
Gottesman’s husband, David “Sandy” Gottesman, was a famous figure in the financial world who founded a well-

On November 8, a huge new airship called Pathfinder 1 made its first test flight in California. At 121.9 meters
long, it’s far longer than a football field. It’s the largest airship of its kind since the 1930s. But Pathfinder 1 is built
using a lot of new ideas, and new materials.
Airships were especially popular in the early 1900s. They were used for transport, for spying (侦探), and were
even used in war. But most of that ended in 1937, after an airship called the Hindenburg caught fire and burned as it
was landing. The Hindenburg disaster scared people away from airships. From then on, most air travel focused on
airplanes.

quickly, and most importantly, without pollution. The builders have been working on Pathfinder 1 for about 10
years. From the outside, Pathfinder 1 looks similar to the airships of the 1930s. But Pathfinder 1 is completely new.
The ship gets its lift from helium-a lighter-than-air gas that won’t catch fire easily. Hydrogen gas, which does burn,
was responsible for the Hindenburg disaster.
Pathfinder 1 has 12 electric engines, which can be powered by either batteries or generators (发电机). The
engines make it possible for the airship to take off and land without a runway. Pathfinder 1 can fly at a speed of up
to 120 kph. But it will be flying much more slowly during its early test flights. The first 50 flights are limited to 457
meters high.
Pathfinder 1 can carry about 4 tons of people and things. In time, builders hope to show that airships can
provide a low-pollution way to move loads over long distances. They are also interested in using airships to help
people out in emergency situations, such as after an earthquake or a hurricane, when roads are closed and there’s no
place for planes to land.

Daniela Ventura, a bird biologist at the University of Havana in Cuba, recently caught a catbird using a net in a
plant garden. This small, gray bird is among the migratory bird species that migrate from the United States and

Ventura shared her observations with her students, who took notes nearby. She depicted the species, its
weight, and its body fat. This information provides valuable data for a joint project between Canada and Cuba.
Ventura and the other researchers involved in the project aim to discover more about how and where these birds
spend their winters in Cuba.
To make it possible to carry out this research, they have put up a radio telemetry antenna（遥测天线）in
Cuba. This antenna operates as part of an international research network called MOTUS, marking the first time
Cuba has been included in the network.
The antenna can track birds that have been radio-tagged（无线电标记）in other parts of North America.
Recently, it discovered a small Swainson's thrush（a kind of bird）in Cuba, which had originally been tagged in
British Columbia, Canada—a distance of 5,000 kilometers from Cuba.
Two Cuban researchers, Mugica and Acosta, remember the challenges they faced during their scientific
careers. Mugica mentioned that she lost over 30 kilograms during her research many years ago, when food was
difficult to find in Cuba. Even today, conducting research can be difficult at times. For instance, their 20-year-old
truck required a push start on a recent morning.
However, the team celebrates their small successes. The catbird that Ventura recently caught had been tagged
with a leg band at the same location.

This man’s generous behavior is really a timely help. Thanks to his behavior, my brother and I had new clothes
for the school year. I couldn’t imagine what our life would be like without the stranger who saw we were struggling
and decided to help, purely out of the kind heart. In honor of him, my brother and I made up our minds to help
anyone in need when we grew up. So now, whenever I see people struggling, I try to reach out a helping hand.
