Johnson, who likes to look up at the sky, is a volunteer advocate with DarkSky, a movement aimed at reducing
light pollution and promoting responsible outdoor lighting. DarkSky is active in more than 70 countries.
Light pollution can be disastrous for wildlife and particularly for migrating(迁徙)birds. Many migratory birds
,
are easy to be drawn to light. Once in a big city with lit up buildings birds have trouble finding their way out
again.
Johnson moved to Ridgefield years ago and loved how dark the sky was compared to living in the city. She
worked with the City of Ridgefield to help ensure new house development going up followed local lighting
regulations and passionately began sharing information about DarkSky at local events.
Johnson and other DarkSky volunteers and birding organizations made DarkSky’s Principles of Outdoor
Lighting for bird safety: Use targeted lighting; Use outdoor lighting only if needed; Turn outdoor lights to the
lowest level possible; Add controlling features to your lights; Use warm-colored outdoor lights. The Bird Alliance
of Oregon promotes a “Lights Out” campaign during migration seasons to raise awareness about responsible
lighting. This year, Portland mayor signed a declaration setting Sept. 19-Oct.19, 2024 as “Lights Out Portland
Month”, encouraging residents to turn off unnecessary lights from 11 p.m. until dawn during migration periods.

An incredibly adaptive species of coral (珊瑚) discovered off the coast of Gool-boodi Island in Northeast
Australia has weathered hundreds of years of coral bleaching (白化) and survived till now. What can this teach
scientists about preservation?
At 34 feet wide, this coral is roughly the size of a carousel. Its incredible width is a result of its hard skeleton,
which is made of calcium carbonate from the surrounding seawater. Nicknamed Muga dhambi, or “big coral”, it
stands over 16 feet tall, making Muga dhambi the tallest coral in the Great Barrier Reef. This record-breaking coral
is discovered by local citizens.
Based on the coral’s size and growth rate, scientists have calculated its lifetime is about 421-438 years,
meaning this ancient coral has survived as many as 80 cyclones and weathered 99 coral bleaching events. It has
survived through centuries of and outlived many invasive (入侵的) species.
“It’s extremely inspiring to know that these things like Muga dhambi exist, and have survived for a long time.
The colony is in fairly good health with 70% of it consisting of live coral. Even as more coral cover is lost due to
climate change, there is hope that adaptive species like Muga dhambi will continue to survive. Ancient colonies likethe Muga dhambi offer scientists a rare opportunity to learn more about reef conditions as long as these massive
corals continue to grow.
Hopefully, it helps to provide a new sense of hope for the future. There are many unexplored corners of the
Great Barrier Reef, so it is possible that there are larger coral colonies waiting to be documented by local citizen
scientists someday.
8. What’s the purpose of Para 2?
A. To raise an argument. B. To express opinions.
C. To give examples. D. To give information.
9. What helps to estimate the lifetime of Muga dhambi?
A. The surrounding seawater. B. Its size and growth rate.
C. Its admirable survival skills. D. The scaring invasive species.
10. What can be used to replace the underlined word ”documented"?
A. Displayed. B. Recorded. C. Spread. D. Reflected.
11. Which is the suitable title for the text?
A. The Great Barrier Reef Produces a Variety of Rare Corals
B. Multiple Invasive Species Surround the Great Barrier Reef
C. The Great Barrier Reef Survives Series of Coral Bleaches
.
D A Centuries-Old Coral Offers Hope for the Great Barrier Reef

For business leaders, the idea of applying AI such as ChatGPT to strategic planning is mouthwatering. But
how do we identify the areas where AI can boost strategic planning? Can AI overcome blind spots and predict the
future?
Keith is CEO of Trident, a commercial agricultural company. Keith called his members for their annual
strategy discussion. One step involved listing the “key strategic issues”. Here’s the team’s list: Competition; Branch
number and location; Product pricing; Profitability; Climate. While Keith was happy with the list, he recognized
they had a limited perspective. As agricultural scientists, they knew their game, but they didn’t know any others.
Hence, Keith raised two questions: Can AI provide a non-agricultural perspective? Can AI help forecast future
demand for service?
The first concerns a single-minded view based on the industry experience alone. Keith wanted to tap into a
viewpoint outside agricultural science to produce a fresh perspective. He turned to AI for help.
AI’s response contained multiple headings. Was there anything new? Yes. But there were also misses. AI
didn’t pick up “branch number and location” and “profitability” on Keith’s list. “Branch location” is a very specificissue to Trident and AI hardly knows about that. Not mentioning “profitability” was a big miss. Also, it didn’t
mention the critical issue of “product pricing” related to competition. AI’s large language model lacks access to
company-specific information, explaining some misses. To tackle this, Keith regenerated responses to see
alternative answers. For instance, asking AI to simply provide 10 more ideas helped create a longer list and avoid
those obvious misses.
On Keith’s first question, AI had succeeded. It presented important areas that Keith’s team missed:
technological advancements and regulatory changes. Keith’s second question proved more challenging for AI,
because it is trained on historical data and cannot predict the future.
However, with clever clues, AI can provide the team with food for thought. When asked “What will impact the
future demand for our services?”, the tool highlighted factors, from changing consumer preferences to global
population growth. These drivers help Keith’s team think more broadly about demand.
12. What does the author want to prove with Keith’s company?
A. AI’s ability to spot different perspectives.
B. AI’s function in improving production.
C. Al can contribute to strategic planning.
D. AI can boost profitability.
13. What made Keith turn to AI for help?
A. Limitations of his team’s fist.
B. Dream to invent new technology.
C. Uncertainty about future demand.
D. Change of the conventional pattern.
14. What is the main idea of Para 4?
A. AI helped to spot new possibilities.
B. AI ignored some important parts.
C. AI created automatic alternatives.
D. AI accessed large language model.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards AI’s application in strategic planning?
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Disapproving. D. Unclear.

The sports meet took place on Saturday. Hundreds of runners and audience were on my high school campus
for this huge meet. If I ran a qualifying time in this meet, I could go to Districts for a higher level race. Maybe it
would be called a miracle, but that’s my dream.
I warmed up, stretched, ran a few laps. And I also drank plenty of liquid so I wouldn’t dehydrate(脱水). No
one told me I should not have been drinking iced tea.
BANG! The gun sounded and off I ran around the track. I had a good start, and about six girls were before me.
I began to move up in the pack. The first lap went well. My pace was great. Then to my horror, I realized too late I
should have visited the restroom before the race began.
A painful and involuntary press took hold of my bladder (膀胱) and slowly began squeezing it. I imagined my
bladder growing smaller and smaller, while its contents increased in volume. Pain shot through me with every
pounding step I ran. And then the dam broke. Whispers of pain escaped my lips, and tears started flowing down my
face. Somehow I managed to keep running despite my pain and embarrassment, knowing that as soon as I finished I
could disappear and minimize my embarrassment further.
I passed people. Fifth, fourth, then third. Suddenly I found myself in second place! But I just wanted to get offthat track as soon as possible. I had to go to the restroom first!
