One Bite at a Time
One summer day when I was heading for the teaching building, I met Philip, one of my colleagues ( 同 事 ),
who worked in the same office with me. Beside him stood another young man. Philip introduced me to the young
man, named Stephen. He told me that Stephen would take one of my classes Introduction to American History.
Stephen asked if my class was going to be hard. I felt he was worried about failing before the opening day of
classes. We talked about what the class would cover and I saw Stephen’s eyes getting big with fear.
Then I remembered a classical dialogue: Question: “How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a
time.”
.
I told him to deal with his work that way — to do all his assignment (作业) and to hand them in on time
I added that most successful students I knew made a timetable in order to plan their study well.
As time went on, I learned more of Stephen’s story. He had difficulty in study when he was in the middle
school. Family members, including his mother, kept telling him that he was a failure. He told me that before
coming to our college no one had believed he had much potential (潜力).Stephen didn’t become an “A” student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in class every
day, turning in all of his assignment on time and breaking down his studying into bite-sized parts. By passing
course after course he began to build up bit of self-respect.
Every time I saw him, he would brighten up and say, “One bite at a time.” He told his friends that he was
succeeding when he was supposed to be failing. His secret, he said, was that he was practising what I taught him
before classes ever started: “Take it one bite at a time.”
24. What is the relationship between the writer and Stephen?
A. Father and son. B. Teacher and student.
C. Classmates. D. Colleagues.
25. To plan their study well, most successful students .
A. made a timetable B. chose many courses
C. asked teachers questions D. took notes carefully
26. Stephen’s story mainly tells us that .
A. it is hard to pass courses in college B. we all need good luck to make a success
C. bad things can turn out to be good sometimes D. taking one bite at a time can help students succeed

Paris is the city of dreams. If you plan to head to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is
in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the
official processes I had to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations
and assignments first, rather than last. This method proved to be very helpful.
Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to
explore, and cafes to sit in. Read books about Paris. Talk to locals and other foreigners living there. But the one
thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris
on foot. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy
that I experience in Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere
that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to
the market each Sunday to enjoy the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in
saying bonjour to the passers-by.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, "Bonjour Monsieur," as I passed the little store down the street. Iguess the best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own way. And I know
mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.
27. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. The special working experience in Paris.
B. The charming neighborhoods in Paris.
C. Living abroad in Paris as a student.
D. The stressful study in Paris.
28. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Happiness. B. Imagination. C. Confidence. D. Competition,
29. Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most?
A. Enjoying a cup of coffee in his spare time.
B. Greeting people in French in the street.
C. Buying vegetables in the market.
D. Wandering in Paris on foot.
30. According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression(印象)?
A. The steps he went through before the exchange program.
B. The presentations and assignments he did in class.
C. The academic achievement he made in his study.
D. The special culture he experienced in the city.

A Fluent Advantage
When schools go through budget (预算) cuts, foreign language classes are often placed on the cutting block.
School administrators often do not understand how important foreign language study is for their students, success
in the real world. Far from cutting language classes, schools should be demanding them for all students. Studying a
foreign language should be required (要求) in middle schools.
Language study strengthens students' minds. Many studies have suggested that multilingual people—people
,
who speak more than one language—are better at certain tasks. Specifically multilingual people have better
executive function (执行力) than people who speak only one language. Executive function is the way the brain
manages all the information it's given, such as performing different tasks and deciding what to focus on. In brain
scans (扫描), multilingual people show increased activity in the areas of the brain that control executive function.
Researchers have guessed that this advantage exists because multilingual people must constantly decide which
words from which language to use. As a result, multilingual people get lots of practice with executive function.Their brains can then apply those skills to other tasks, like paying attention or multitasking. This effect is especially
strong for people who grow up speaking more than one language. The earlier students start language classes, the
more benefits they may get from language study.
Moreover, language study helps prepare students for their future careers. Today, language skills are in high
demand on the job market and more and more businesses work in many countries across the world. As businesses
become global, they need people who can communicate easily across national borders. To prepare for their careers
(事业), more students should be learning foreign languages. From 2010 to 2015, the demand in the United States
for workers who speak a second language doubled. This trend (趋势) included workers of all skill levels and
backgrounds.
Of course, in order to make better use of the advantages of foreign language study, middle school foreign
language classes should not just make students memorize new words and sounds. They must also teach students
about new cultures. Foreign language classes should be required to include lessons about history, literature,
customs, and government along with the languages themselves. These subjects will help students become better
global citizens and support their studies in other subjects.
Requiring middle schoolers to study a foreign language offers them opportunities to sharpen their brains. It
also gives them tools that will help them become productive members of today’s global society.
31. How does the author feel about foreign language study in middle schools?
A. More foreign language classes should be offered in middle schools.
B. Studying a foreign language should be a middle school requirement.
C. Foreign language classes should be cut because of the limited budget.
D. Taking a foreign language class in middle schools should be a choice.
32. What's the author's purpose of writing Paragraph 4?
A. To put forward a solution. B. To stress his point of view.
C. To summarize his argument. D. To introduce a suggestion.
33. The author believes ____________.
A. people's executive function improves after foreign language classes
B. people learn languages better as young people than when they are older
C. being able to work in another country doubles people's job opportunities
D. people who speak more than one language have better executive function

Young Inventor Creates Plastic from Fish Scales
Lucy Hughes, a 24-year-old English inventor, has used fish skin and scales(鳞)to create a new kind of plasticthat will break down in about six weeks. Her invention won 2019 James Dyson Award, which was created by the
famous English inventor James Dyson to encourage students to try to use their creativity to solve problems in the
real world.
Lucy Hughes studied how to design products at the University of Sussex in England. As a designer, she knew
a lot about how wasteful many products are. Plastic bags, for example, are often used once for a short time and then
thrown away. She decided to challenge herself to make something out of waste instead
The University of Sussex isn't far from the coast. Ms. Hughes spent some time studying the fishing business
and the waste from fish that were thrown away. After some tests, she decided that the fish skin and scales seemed
like the most likely parts for her product. She tried more than 100 different experiments before getting things just
right. Ms. Hughes called her finished product "MarinaTex". It solves two problems: the single-use plastic and fish
waste.
MarinaTex is clear and feels like plastic, but it's stronger than normal plastic that is of the same thickness. It is
also cheap to make since it's made from fish waste. The process of making MarinaTex also doesn't use much
energy. Most importantly, MarinaTex doesn't take hundreds of years to break down. On its own, it breaks down in
four to six weeks.
For winning the contest, Ms. Hughes will earn f,30, 000. Her school will get f,5, 000. She is looking forward
to moving ahead with her idea. She hopes the award money will help her with the process of getting MarinaTex
into use as quickly as possible. She thinks that one of the best uses for MarinaTex will be in some kinds of food
packaging.
