One of the greatest tests of a parent’s patience comes at night when you trying to get your children to fall
asleep. You know you need to rock them, stroke their backs or just keep a comforting hand on them until they nod
off.But that time is playing a zero-sum game(零和游戏)with your own need for sleep and something else you need
to do:work, zone out on Netflix or just enjoy the quiet after the kids have gone to sleep. When my older daughter was just a baby, I figured out a way to control my impatience: I’d count to 100,along
with the slow back-and-forth sway or the calm and steady strokes of her back. It gave me the light at the end of the
tunnel that almost always did the trick. My impatience would die down because I knew that I’d reach the goal.
The result was surprising. By not thinking over the activities waiting for me, I focused on my daughter instead.
The numbers from 1 to 100 became the calm breath.I couldn’t hold complex thoughts on the top of counting, so
deeper emotions surfaced, specifically love and appreciation of the small person I was holding and touching. I was
less likely to get pulled away by unnecessary streams of thoughts and soon began to deeply enjoy these moments.
My daughter benefited from the extended touch as well. Science shows that the physical touch releases three
chemicals in our brain associated with emotional and physical health benefits. These chemicals promote feelings of
happiness and well-being, and increase pleasure while regulating mood and relieving anxiety. By holding and
stroking our children, we’re conveying safety and trust, relieving stress and activating(激活)our bodies’ special
nerves. This is what actual bonding with our child looks like.
My daughter is 1l years old now, and I still continue this nighttime ritual(惯例): Give her comforting and
loving strokes and frequent hugs, maintaining a physical connection.
24.What probably causes parents to be extremely impatient at night?
A.Making their children fall asleep.
B.Staying up late for extra work.
C.Facing too much housework.
D.Searching for information online.
25.What happened to the author when he was counting numbers?
A.He got completely lost in thought.
B.He thought of traveling through the tunnel.
C.He came to realize his deep love for his child.
D.He was constantly interrupted by other thoughts.
26.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Ways to calm ourselves down.
B.Advantages of the physical touch.
C.Benefits of keeping a good mood.
D.Roles of special chemicals in brains.
27.What could be the best title for the text?
A.The challenge for children to fall asleepB.The balance between family and career
C.A solution to conveying my impatience
D.A night routine to bond with my daughter

Whether you’re interested in green agriculture and rainforest conservation or supporting sustainable sources,
organizations worldwide are investing time and effort into various environmental protection projects. Volunteers are
always needed to help with the different initiatives to protect the environment.
The past years has been bothered by an endless report of natural disasters occurring in geographically weak
locations. Floods are affecting the places that previously never faced this problem while heat waves, droughts and
earthquakes are becoming the norm. Important wildlife and plant species are disappearing and threatening the
planet’s biodiversity. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there are other problems: deforestation,
pollution, water scarcity, illegal fishing and wildlife trade.
The ongoing industrialization and the lack of awareness are taking its toll (毁坏) and it’s time for that to
change. Most people remain inactive, believing small changes won’t make a difference. However, there are many
ways to help. Small changes carried out by some people do make a difference.
Excellent examples of this are organizations that believe small initiatives have a significant impact. These
projects arc growing steadily and positively affecting the environmental conservation and influencing the local
community. They are creating awareness among others and helping them understand the importance of
environmental conservation while creating volunteer opportunities to help the environment.
The organizations will learn valuable skills about environmental conservations but most importantly, they are
moving towards change. There are enough environmental volunteer opportunities that need your help and there’s no
time to waste! Continue reading about environmental volunteer programs abroad and take steps toward
environmental conservation.
There are plenty of options once you decide to become an environmental volunteer. The tasks will depend on
the project you have decided to volunteer with and can vary greatly. With over 130 projects focusing on the
environment, you’ll find projects that match both your skill set and travel preference.

A.They try to find ways.
B.They keep sitting by.
C.They start to get involved.

To figure out if we can die of boredom, we first have to understand what boredom is. For help, I called James
Danckert, a psychologist who studies boredom at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “A lot of people think
about being bored as being lazy. And it’s absolutely not that,” he says. “Bored people want to be engaged with their
world, eager to do something satisfying and exciting. But any attempt to do so is failing.”
That means boredom is usually very upsetting. And it can have physical consequences. In one of his
experiments, Danckert made people extremely bored by showing them a video of two people hanging clothes to
dry. He found that when people got bored, their hearts beat faster and their levels of a hormone called cortisol (皮质
醇) went up, compared to when they watched another video that made them sad. These physical changes were signs
that boredom was stressing them out. “It’s not like having a full-on panic attack,” Danckert says. But it’s certainly
enough to make boredom unpleasant.
Let’s come back to if boredom can kill you. Back in the 1980s, scientists asked people who worked for the
British government a whole bunch of questions, including how bored they felt in their daily lives. The study trackedthe participants over time. When any one of them died, the survey recorded the cause of death. In 2010, two
researchers matched up these causes of death with the participants’ level of boredom. It turned out that people who
said they were more bored were also more likely to have died of heart disease. “We know that prolonged exposure
to stress is bad for your health,” Danckert says. A single boring day can’t kill you. But if you’re always bored, the
stress could add up into something dangerous.
“Oh no,” you might be thinking. “School is boring, my friends are boring, everything is boring! What’s going
to happen to me?” Don’t worry, Danckert says: “As you get older, you get less bored,” mainly because you gain
more independence and have to get busy to achieve your long-term goals. And trust me: that’s anything but boring.
32.According to James Danckert, people feel bored because ________.
A.they are too lazy to do anything B.they can’t gain excitement in life
C.they are too frightened to have a try D.they can’t fully understand boredom
33.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Doing housework will make people bored. B.People’s heart rate increases with boredom.
C.Physical changes can lead to extreme boredom. D.Watching something sad is a boring experience.
34.What does the underlined word “prolonged” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Continued. B.Repeated. C.Sudden. D.Active.
35.What does Danckert recommend to save people from boredom?
A.Depending on friends. B.Setting long-term goals.
C.Keeping yourself occupied. D.Trusting people around you.

Science shows that stretching (拉伸) is essential after exercise. Stretching lengthens and mobilizes the
connective tissue around your muscle. What’s more, stretching helps your blood flow and even relieves your stress.
____ 3 6____
You could feel sick. You won’t be surprised to know that when you exercise, you raise your heart rate for a
period of time. While it’s great to get that blood flowing, it’s just as important to get your heart rate back to a
normal level after the workout is over. ____ 3 7____ As your heart is beating faster and your body temperature is
higher, you could pass out or feel sick if you stop too fast. Stretching after physical activity allows a gradual
decrease at the end of the episode.Your muscles will likely become stiffer and more sore. When you exercise your muscles, it produces lactic
acid (乳酸), which is actually what causes your muscles to become sore. When you rest between periods of
exercise, your body naturally breaks down that lactic acid. One thing that helps your body get rid of that lactic acid?
____ 3 8____ . Stretching helps you distribute oxygen throughout your body, which can reduce lactic acid production
and rid your muscles of any accumulation of lactic acid.
____ 3 9____ Flexibility is closely related to injury risk. Poor flexibility will cause you to have muscles that
get tired quicker and joints that are more likely to suffer from injury. Besides, your weakened range of motion will
lead to less blood and nutrients to your joints. ____ 4 0____ Sticking to stretching exercise after physical activity
can hopefully improve your flexibility.
A.You’ll be at risk of injury.
B.You guessed it: Stretching.
C.You’ll improve your flexibility by stretching.
D.It does wonders for both your physical and mental health.
E.This is also known in the fitness world as “cooling down”.
F.There are harmful side effects if you don’t stretch after exercise.
G.That’s why people often feel pain in their “weight bearing” joints like knees and hips.

【江苏省南通市海安市实验中学2022-2023学年高三上学期9月月考】阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给
段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when
he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke
off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed
down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favorite possession. To cover his terrible
action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together quickly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise,
the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no
matter how hard he tried. It raced round the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was
quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and
opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other
family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for
lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once.
The boy thought he would now be punished, but as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to
the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push
open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
