【答案】17.A 18.B 19.B 20.C
W: Now, as you’re new, I’m just going to show you a map of the hospital and point out a few key places. At
the moment, we’re in the main building, that’s there...and if you go out of the main entrance and just along the main
road to the east, you’ll find the staff leisure center. There’s a range of things that you can do here to help you relax.
If you get ill, we do have a health center for all employees, and this is directly behind the main hospital building.
And there is a small garden next to it. Many of you might like to go to the 24-hour swimming pool. They’re very
close by, and it doesn’t cost much money to get in. If you walk out of the main building, there’s a road straight
ahead of you. Go down that and turn left into Tye Road—you’ll see the pool entrance at the end of that road.
Finally, if you want a healthy meal and you have very little time to get it, of course there’s always the dining hall
inside the main building. But I would recommend a place called Jenny’s Restaurant which is near the main
building. You can get a number of excellent dishes here at a reasonable price. Well, I think that’s all. Thank you.

As a college student in Boston, I formed the habit of buying used books. I enjoy the hunt, the good price and
the unrecognized treasures. I find old textbooks, ex-bestsellers, and books on subjects I’ve never heard of and now
must learn all about. I don’t search for rare books, first editions, or leather-bound editions but books that are worth
reading.
Rereading, for me, is a pleasure during retirement. The theater and the concert hall become less appealing tome, along with crowds. Staying alone and reading books have become extremely important to me. Literature needs
the flesh of experience to have its full effect. Different books offer me insights and ways of expressing that stuck in
my mind as grains of sand in an oyster now shine like pearls. My taste in books improves with age.
While packing for a move, which occurs at intervals of five to seven years, I clear my shelves and pick my
books. I abandon a few, later regret my decisions, and look for them again. Several years ago, I got rid of books
related to my job-architecture. Some were design guides, reference books, product catalogs, and things that went
out of date. Some were historical or centered on a period or an architect. These had given me many hours of
pleasure. Will I ever open their covers again? Certainly. I held on to the red bulk of Sir Banister Fletcher’s A
History of Architecture and books on Paris, Rome, and Boston.
I gave away drafting equipment and instruments. I threw out rolls and rolls of paper, and old drawings of
projects completed long ago, some of which had even been damaged. This time, I stay put in a cottage that suits my
status and I’ve moved on in spirit. No doubt I will acquire more used books and throw away more books as
passions grow and fade, like feathers changing with the seasons.
24.What does the author consider most important when choosing used books?
A.Their appealing covers. B.Their reasonable prices.
C.Their excellent content. D.Their collection value.
25.What does the author realize as he grows older?
A.He has a small circle of friends. B.His attitude towards work changes.
C.His communication skills improve. D.He has a deeper understanding of life and books.
26.Why does the author mention books on architecture?
A.To show some books are worth reading repeatedly.
B.To recommend Sir Banister Fletcher’s books.
C.To suggest we avoid making poor decisions.
D.To explain his love for architecture.
27.What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?
A.He will stop throwing away used books.
B.He likes updating his collection of used books.
C.He is bad at using advanced drafting equipment.
D.He enjoys leading an active life in the countryside.
【答案】24.C25.D26.A27.B

I don’t search for rare books, first editions, or leather-bound editions but books
that are worth reading.”(我不寻找珍本、第一版或皮面版的书,而是那些值得一读的书。)
根据第二段“Different books offer me insights (见解) and ways of expressing that stuck
in my mind as grains of sand in an oyster(牡蛎) now shine like pearls. My taste in books improves with age.”
Will I ever open their covers again? Certainly. I held on to the red bulk
of Sir Banister Fletcher’s A History of Architecture and books on Paris, Rome, and Boston.”(我还会再打开他们
故选A项。
No doubt I will acquire more used books and throw away more books as
passions grow and fade, like feathers changing with the seasons.”(毫无疑问,我将获得更多的二手书,并扔掉

Though its effects are not always visible to the human eye, plastic is choking life on Earth. The process for
manufacturing plastic worsens climate change, and the spreading of plastic in the environment has led to
heartbreaking sights.
Then there came a daydream: Can we create something that will consume it?
A new study suggests that an enzyme(酶) which targets polyethylene terephthalate(PET)—a widely-used
substance found in a majority of consumer packaging products that contains 12 percent of all global waste—could
make that scientific dream, which is also necessity, into a reality.
The key ingredient was n natural enzyme known as PETase, according to the paper published in the scientific
journal Nature. Using a machine learning model, scientists at the University of Texas figured out what changes
would cause the enzyme to be able to quickly break down the targeted types of plastic waste.
“It has been a well-explored problem in many industries,” Hal AIper, a professor in Chemical Engineering,
said, “Therefore, we feel that this part of the problem is easily achievable in a short period of time. The more
challenging aspect will be making enzyme break down on a large scale with mixed plastics waste.”
This was not the first effort to solve the plastic pollution problem. In March 2016, Japanese researchers found
a bacteria that would “eat“ the plastic until it turned into sludge(泥浆). Last year, scientists at the University of
Edinburgh announced that E. Coli, a common bacterium, could be used to change PET into a kind of material,
which might be able to be safely consumed by humans.
Joanna Sadler, a biotechnology professor at the University of Edinburgh, characterized the new enzyme as the
“fastest enzyme reported to date” in terms of the speed of breaking down different plastics. “This makes it a verypromising technological development in the field, and demonstrates the better adapted usage of this enzyme,”
Sadler said.
28.What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To explain a unique phenomenon.
B.To stimulate the readers’ curiosity.
C.To analyze the cause of the situation.
D.To provide some background information.
29.What is the challenging problem scientists are facing?
A.Turning the scientific dream into a reality.
B.Causing the enzyme to work more effectively.
C.Putting a machine learning model into practice.
D.Making the enzyme dissolve plastics massively.
30.Why are the examples mentioned in Paragraph 6?
A.To evaluate the scientists’ previous efforts.
B.To introduce some similar biological means.
C.To prove the possibility of recycling plastics.
D.To stress the importance of plastic-eating bacteria.
31.Which word best describes Sadler’s attitude to the enzyme?
A.Skeptical. B.Objective. C.Optimistic. D.Critical.
Though its effects are not always visible to the human eye, plastic is
choking life on Earth. The process for manufacturing plastic worsens climate change, and the spreading of plastic in
the environment has led to heartbreaking sights.(虽然塑料的影响并不总是肉眼可见,但它正在窒息地球上的
“Then there came a daydream: Can we create something that will consume it? (然后我做了一个白日梦:我们能
创造出一些东西来消耗它吗?)”可知制造塑料的过程加剧了气候变化,塑料在环境中的扩散导致了令人心
碎的景象。那么基于这种情况我们能不能创造一些东西来消耗这些塑料呢?所以第一段是提供了背景知识。
故选D项。
29.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“The more challenging aspect will be making enzyme break down on a large
scale with mixed plastics waste.(“更具有挑战性的方面将是如何利用混合塑料垃圾大规模分解酶。”)”
根据文章第六段“This was not the first effort to solve the plastic pollution problem.(这不是
以及“In March 2016, Japanese researchers found a bacteriathat would “eat” the plastic until it turned into sludge(泥浆). Last year, scientists at the University of Edinburgh
announced that E. Coli, a common bacterium, could be used to change PET into a kind of material, which might be
able to be safely consumed by humans.( 2016年3月,日本研究人员发现了一种细菌,它会“吃掉”塑料,直
Joanna Sadler, a biotechnology professor at the University of Edinburgh,
characterized the new enzyme as the “fastest enzyme reported to date” in terms of the speed of breaking down
different plastics. “This makes it a very promising technological development in the field, and demonstrates the
better adapted usage of this enzyme,” Sadler said.(爱丁堡大学(University of Edinburgh)生物技术教授Joanna

You look up at the sky on a clear and dark night, you’ll see more stars than your eyes can count. Most of these
stars have planets, similar to our own, orbiting them. With so many celestial bodies floating out in space, you can’t
help but question whether other forms of life exist in the universe. And if that’s the case, is it possible to contact
them?
Science is still somewhat divided on this issue. Currently, no evidence exists to suggest that intelligent life
exists elsewhere in the universe. Yet with an estimated one trillion planets in our galaxy alone, it seems highly
likely that Earthlings aren’t the only intelligent creatures out there. Some claim that life can only develop under
perfect circumstances, and Earth is perhaps the only example of this. Other scientists object to this claim, and point
out that even on Earth, life can find a way under the most extreme circumstances.
Some people believe that aliens have already visited our planet, but this information is being kept secret by
governments. The most famous incident of this kind occurred in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. On that date, many
residents reported seeing an unusual flying disc streak through the sky, before it crashed in a field. When the
military heard about the crash, they quickly sealed off the area. A few hours later, the army base announced that it
had recovered a flying disk. Shortly after, this statement was retracted and it was said that it was a weather balloon
that crashed. However, years later one local mortician even claimed that the military had him secretly perform an
autopsy on a dead alien body.
Others believe that there certainly are other life forms out there, but the distance between us is too great. Even
if we could somehow create a spaceship that travels at the speed of light, it would still probably take severallifetimes to reach them. Then again, we might never have to do this if aliens reach us first.
32.Why do some scientists think there is life on other planets?
A.Because an unusual flying disc was ever witnessed.
B.Because life exists despite extreme conditions as those on the Earth do.
C.Because the government’s statement seemed suspicious.
D.Because there are a great number of planets in the universe.
33.What does the underlined word “retracted” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Examined again to guarantee the correctness.B.Emphasized again to persuade people.
C.Formally taken back what has been said. D.Seriously criticized due to poor evidence
34.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Are we alone in the universe? B.Is it possible to contact aliens?
C.Intelligent life in the universe. D.Planets floating out in space.
35.How does the author sound in the passage?
A.Objective. B.Humorous. C.Cautious. D.Anxious.
【答案】32.D33.C34.A35.A
Yet with an estimated one trillion planets in our galaxy alone, it seems highly
likely that Earthlings aren’t the only intelligent creatures out there.(然而,据估计,仅在我们的星系中就有一万
A few hours later, the army base announced that it had recovered a flying
disk. Shortly after, this statement was”以及后文“it was said that it was a weather balloon that crashed(据说是一
With so many celestial bodies floating out in space, you can’t help but
question whether other forms of life exist in the universe. And if that’s the case, is it possible to contact them?(太空
故选A。
根据第二段中“Science is still somewhat divided on this issue.(科学界在这个问题上仍然存
Some people believe that aliens have already visited our planet, but this information is
Others believe that there certainly are other life forms out there, but the distance between us is too
故选A。

How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career
When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.
____ 3 6____ . If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go,
of course, but you can’t always make money doing things you like (like video games or drinking beer). And
sometimes things you like are better as a hobby or side passion.
Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn’t sound so bad. Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer? Or
maybe that’s out of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker. ___ 3 7___ but often they are not
something you’re really passionate about. It’s kind of like just doing something because it’s there-- not very
inspired.
However, there’s another way that is perhaps better: ____ 3 8____ . For example, taking care of children,
because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into
government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help
ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease. ____ 3 9____ and if you choose one of them for
that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day.
There are endless ways to do that. The point isn’t how you serve the world, but just serving the world in some
way will help you feel filled with purpose. ____ 4 0____ .
A.These are all great choices
B.Think about what you like to do
C.You can identify your purpose and work out how to get there
D.Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids
following her and doing everything she did.
Her deskmate, Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was
teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”. Every time
Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to
crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told
them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the
opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar
one. Curling in the corner, it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?” She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told
her how chickens could act. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around
his forehead. “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it
so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little thing!” Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped the frightened chicken up in her arms,
whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her
classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s
fatter and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. She carries it around the garden, and...” Everyone was
entertained by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter lingering around the classroom.

Possible version:
Then Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the
floor as usual. It hit Catherine that the pecking order worked in school, too. Landy was just like the poor little
chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. “It’s time for me to make an
apology to Landy.” Catherine thought to herself. No sooner had she made up her mind than she announced it to the
cool kids surrounding her. Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming, “Talking to the long
spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said. “Hi, Landy. I’m sorry about the
spaghetti thing.” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening. “I know it hurts you. Can you forgive us?”
She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her
tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to
Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also gained an important life
lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.
①.意识到:be aware of/realize/it hit sb that
②.道歉:murmur an apology/say sorry to/make an apology
①.惊讶的:astonished/surprised
