The teenage years are usually the most stressful years in a person’s life. As teens go through great changes in
body, mind and so on, they are often easy to get angry and full of strong feelings. Teens of today face more
challenges than before. Technological improvements and even climate change are bringing new changes and
causing more trouble for teens to deal with.
One new challenge is about new technologies and ways of working, such as AI that will change the future
jobs. The challenge for a teen today is preparing for an unknown future. In the past, a teen could prepare for only
one career path and be quite certain to stay in the same area of work for a long time. The situation is different today
as AI continues to take away jobs that depend on humans.Teens will have to meet this challenge by developing a
sense of lifelong learning, being willing to learn skills that match real needs and keeping up with technology.
Finally, teens will also have to prepare for career paths of more possibilities.
In addition, as the effects of climate change become more common in recent years, many teens around the
world are in fear or anger. Disasters and the rise in sea levels have destroyed homes and taken away lives. Many
people have been hurt by these terrible climatic events, and even if a teen has not suffered, he or she is often
worried about what may happen in the future.
To manage the great challenges of the 21st century, teens should treat challenges as chances. To keep up with
technological improvements, they should continue to learn new skills. As for dealing with the climate change, they
can come together to think of new ways to accept changes and help create a more sustainable(可持续的)future.

Most people have the good fortune to be raised by caring parents, who give them not only their love but also
their time spent in doing various things for them. However, many who love their parents have trouble finding the
time to spend with them that they know they deserve(值得). Well, here are some ideas.
●A family meal
For those who live within less than an hour’s travelling distance from their parents, a weekly get together
around the dinner table is really not too much to ask. It can be at your place or theirs, or you can have other choices.
Take the chance to chat about daily happenings, and repay just a little of the time they gladly spent on you. If they
live really close by, you could even drop in on the way home from work at times.
●A weekly planned phone call
For those who live at a greater distance from their parents, there is no possibility of regular contact in person,
but this does not mean an end to personal contact. Your parents will be glad to hear the sound of your voice, so plan
to call them on the telephone at least once a week. If possible, choose a proper time when everyone is more likely
to be at home. Your parents will be even happier if this could be a video call.
●E-mail, text and social networks
If your parents feel quite comfortable in the cyber world, well, spend some time with them in that location.
Exchange e-mails, photos, and even Facebook friends with them. You don’t have to share every detail of your life
with them, just the bits you know they will have interest in.
●Ask for your parents’ advice
Whatever problems you may be having, large or small, it’s a safe bet that your parents have been through it all
before. So talk to them and ask for their advice, and if they make the way clearer for you, it might just turn out to be
the best few minutes you ever spent.
●Share relaxation time
That is, plan time together doing something you both enjoy. Women preparing for a shopping trip or to take in
a film could easily do the same thing together with Mum. Sometimes fathers and sons could enjoy golf or fishing
together. Going out for a meal can be a time for everyone to have fun, or you can get together for a weekend once
or twice a year if distance separates you.

Have you ever visited Longmen Grottoes(石窟)or Yungang Grottoes? Around 1, 800 years ago, Chinese
artists made statues in mountains. Over the years, these statues have gone through earthquakes, floods and wars.
Now in the 21st century, however, they are facing an even bigger problem: tourism. Too many tourists go to visit
those grottoes every year and this certainly does harm to the grotto statues. How?
Over many centuries, these grotto statues slowly corrode(侵蚀)because of the acidic content (酸性物含
量)of air, water and so on. But when they are open to the public, the corrosion process speeds up.
According to a study, the carbon dioxide that visitors breathe out has made the air more acidic. Also, visitors
bring in microorganisms(微生物). Even their body heat can increase the grottoes’ temperature.

Bad behaviour can cause harm to the grotto statues as well. Too many visitors touch the grotto statues and
cause their surfaces to change colour.
When we visit the grottoes, we can often see a sign saying, “No Flash!”or “No Photos!” This is because the
strong light can be bad for the statues, especially those with colour. The light can easily make them lose colour.
To protect those ancient cultural treasures, recently China has asked the workers who take care of those
grottoes not to allow too many visitors to come every day. And to keep a balance between protecting relies and
educating the public, some grotto sites have also created their own digital(数字的)museums.

How important is music? When they are asked this question, students and parents usually answer that music is
nice, but not very important. It is often considered only as entertainment, but not the first choice for education. This
opinion is shortsighted. In fact, music education is necessary and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are. Music reflects(反映)the creators’ thinking and values, as well as the social
environment it came from. For example, just as Mozart music represents a lifestyle, rock music represents a
lifestyle too. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously
American because it came from American musical traditions.
Music provides a kind of ability to know the world in a different way. Science explains how the sun rises and
sets. Music explores the emotive(情感的)meanings. We need every possible way to discover and respond(回
应)to our world because no one way can get it all.
Music is a form of thought, as powerful as science. It is a way we human beings “talk” to each other. Through
the language we express our feelings, our discoveries, our ideas, our imagination and our hopes so that they can be
shared with others. When we do not let our children receive good music education, we take away from them the

So music education is much more important than people generally realize.

One day, when I wake up, I find myself the ruler of the world…
We would have half an hour of “keep fit” every day, away from the Internet. My theory is that almost all
Internet fights would be solved if we were all forced to walk away from computers and do some exercise in fresh
air. I think a lot of our anger comes from the fact that we’re just not getting enough of it.
We must be kind to animals. Once a year, we would have a day completely devoted to animals; everybody
would be allowed to have the day off and just spend their time with their dog, cat or mouse. Sometimes people are
too shy to say that they love animals as much as they love humans. And I guess that I am as well. I wish I could talk
about that more freely. I’m always happy when I meet other people who feel the same way, and devote their lives to
taking in homeless cats and dogs, and raising money for animal charities.
Everybody would have a free Michelin-starred(米其林星级)dinner. We live in a world where we hear
about these places a lot. It’s considered as the pinnacle(巅峰)of experience to go and enjoy food there. But in
fact, for almost 99 per cent of people in my city don’t get the chance. It’s very expensive and might be far away, so
people just don’t go. They might watch it on TV, but they never witness a two-Michelin-star restaurant for

themselves. Since I come to power, everybody will get a free ticket and enjoy themselves in the restaurant.
All people would speak good English. I studied English—really badly—for nine years, in a school in south-
east of China, I wasn’t very hard-working, I just did it because I kind of had to. And I really feel sorry for that,
because now I’m circled by business people speaking English all the time. So, when I come to power, all people
would speak English well, and things will work out.

When it comes to football, a man called Lionel Andres Messi enters our minds.
Messi started to play football when he was a young child. Then, six years later, he developed a serious illness
at the age of 11. Luckily, Football Club Barcelona offered to pay for his medical bills. Messi and his father moved
to Barcelona where Messi joined the club. In 2003, he not only took part in his first match but also won it.
Messi is highly creative, and has the skills to play either in the middle or on the two wings. As other people
say, Messi is the most talented football player in nearly 20 years. Messi has won FIFA’s Golden Ball award(奖) and
the World Cup champions successfully. In 2022, Mesi played in his fifth and final World Cup and won finally.
However, as the most excellent football star, Messi is kind and helpful. In 2007, Messi set up a charity(慈善组

Also, Messi always tries to encourage himself to be better and never feels tired. He is on the way to “The King of

Cars powered by gasoline(汽油)were sold for many years before cars that use electricity. Car companies
are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity only. How do these electric cars measure up to(符合标
准)traditional gasoline cars?
Electric and gasoline cars look similar on the outside. They have very different parts under their hoods(引擎
盖), though. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gasoline cars have hundreds of parts, often
requiring frequent maintenance(保养). Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to maintain and less
likely to have mechanical(机械的)problems.
Electric cars are energy efficient(高效的), also making them cheaper to operate. It costs about $1.00 to
travel 43 miles in an electric car. But it costs about $1.25 to go 18 miles in a gasoline car. Basically, an electric car
can go twice as far as a gas car for the same price.
Electric cars do not have tailpipe emissions(尾气排放), making them more friendly to the environment,
too.
While some details make electric cars seem attractive, other details aren’t as favourable. For example, some
electric cars can travel only 60 to 120 miles on a full charge(充电). Most gas cars can drive hundreds of miles

on a full tank(油箱).
An electric car has to stop more often to get recharged. Therefore, a gas car would be a better option(选择)
if you have far to drive. And electric cars aren’t as convenient(方便的)to power up as gas cars are. There are
plenty of gas stations, but not many charging stations for electric cars. Then, once an electric car reaches a charging
station, it can take up to six hours to charge.
There are certainly advantages to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It’s good to know that there is a choice.
Which one do you prefer? It’ s up to you.

Do you find it hard to say no whenever someone comes to you for help? Do you feel guilty (内疚的) when

answered yes, you may be a “people-pleaser”.
Being friendly and helpful is a good thing. It helps you build lasting friendships. However, going too far—
trying to please others even at the cost of your own happiness—can leave you feeling stressed. Luckily, there are
some steps that you can take to stop being a people-pleaser.
To start with, it’s important to create “boundaries (边界)”in your life. Be clear about what you really like to
do. You can also tell others that they can only come to you during a certain period of time.
When someone asks you for help, tell him or her that you need some time to think about it. Use this time to
ask yourself: Do you really want to do this? How much time will it take? By giving yourself a few minutes, you’ll
be better able to decide.
Some people always try to please others because they have little confidence in themselves. They place a low
value on their own happiness. In this case, try positive self-talk. Remind yourself that you have dreams, too. You
don’t have to give away your time and energy to do things that don’t bring you joy.
Making a sudden and big change can be hard, but you can break huge task up into pieces. You may, for
example, text to say no. Then, go straight to the person and say no. Practice this in less difficult situations first, such
as talking to a salesperson or ordering at a restaurant. Then try refusing your friends or relatives.
Stopping being a people-pleaser doesn’t mean you have to give up being kind and helpful. You can still do
good things—but don’t take away your own happiness.

When talking about the symbols of Chinese culture, lanterns must be one of them. There are three kinds of
lanterns that are widely used in China.
Hanging lanterns
The most common type (种类) of lanterns is hanging lanterns. In cities and the countryside, you can see
hanging lanterns decorating (装饰) street lights, public buildings and shops. A few lanterns will be hung outside
windows, especially during festival seasons. It’s said that lanterns hung during the Chinese New Year can drive
away the monsters (怪兽) “Nian” and bring good luck.
Flying lanterns
On special festivals, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, you can see flying lanterns. They are flown into the sky
all over China. They are beautiful to watch and are often flown outdoors. However, flying lanterns may be
dangerous sometimes. For example, they may cause fires.
Floating lanterns
When people hold some celebrations near rivers or lakes, we can see floating lanterns easily. For example, we
often see floating lanterns during the Dragon Boat Festival. There are different shapes of floating lanterns. The
most common shape is like lotus (莲花). People light floating lanterns in order to create a wonderful view on the

When the first person looked up to the sky, people’s imagination of space began. In China, there are many
stories about the exploration(探索) of space.
Thousands of years ago, there was a lady named Chang’e that flew to the Moon and lived there with a rabbit.
It’s just a story in myths(神话).
In the Ming Dynasty, a man named Wan Hu used a machine which was made of a chair, some fireworks and a
kite as a rocket to fly to space but failed. He was considered as the first human that tried to explore space.
Our exploration of space never stopped until it became a reality in modern times. Without doubt, Chinese
space technology has made great progress.
In 2003, when Shenzhou V set off successfully, Yang Liwei’s words “I am proud of our motherland” brought
tears to our eyes. Carrying the flying dream of the Chinese nation for thousands of years, as the first space visitor of
China, he started the Space Age for the Chinese.
In 2008, Zhai Zhigang in Shenzhou VII had the first Chinese spacewalk, “I am out of the capsule(太空舱),
and I feel good,” he told the world proudly.
In the next years, China kept making its way in order to step further on exploring space. Especially in the
recent years, China has sent up Shenzhou XI and Shenzhou XV. Six astronauts have been sent to space with two
women included. On May 30, 2023, Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao in Shenzhou XVI were sent into

Do you know about traditional Chinese art? There are many different kinds of traditional Chinese art and each
different part of China has its own special kinds of traditional art.
Huaguxi
Huguxi originated (起源) in Hunan Province. Some other provinces, like Hubei, Anhui, Henan, also have
Huaguxi.
People could watch Huaguxi as early as the Qing Dynasty. There were only two roles in the early Huaguxi:
chou and dan, and both roles were played by men. Now Huaguxi has more roles and women can play in Huaguxi.
Face-changing
Face-changing, or bian lian in Chinese, is an important part of Sichuan Opera (Chuan Ju). It started about 300
years ago. It is one of the greatest treasures in traditional Chinese culture. Performers wear colored costumes and
move to quick, dramatic music. They also wear colored masks and change from one mask to another with a
movement of the head, or wave of the hand.
Crosstalk
Crosstalk, or xiangsheng in Chinese, is very popular in China. Many Chinese people like crosstalk because it
makes them happy. Crosstalk is like a talk show. It makes people laugh with jokes or funny questions and answers.

The Difficult Search for American Products in the US
If you go to another country, what kind of things would you buy? Would you buy a camera in Japan, some
beautiful clothes in France, or a watch in Switzerland? No matter what you may buy, you might probably think
those products were made in those countries. However, you could be wrong. Kang Jian is a 17-year-old student
from Shanghai. Last year he went to visit his aunt and uncle in San Francisco. He found it interesting that so many
products in the local shops were made in China. “I wanted to buy a toy car for my cousin, but even though most of
the toys had American brands, they were made in China.”
Toys are not the only things made in China. “I wanted to buy a pair of basketball shoes,” he explains, “but I
had to visit five or six stores before finding a pair made in America!” He realized that Americans can hardly avoid
buying products made in China. “In fact,” he continues, “there are so many things made in China—footballs,
handbags, pet food, mobile phones. Even American flags are made in China!” Kang Jian thinks it’s great that China
is so good at making these everyday things. However, he wishes that in the future China will also get better at
making high-technology products that people can buy in all parts of the world.

As we all know, plants and animals depend on water to live and grow. In fact, water is needed everywhere.
Here are some cool facts about water.
Water in our body
Water isn’t just an important part of our planet. It’s an important part of our body, too. More than half of our
whole body weight is water. Our body loses water whenever we sweat (流汗) or take a shower. That’s why we need
to drink plenty of water every day.
Water in our life
We drink water. We use it to cook, clean, and carry waste out of our homes. Believe it or not, we probably use
between about 300 and 380 kilos of water every day.
Water and weather
Water vapor (水蒸气) is the most important gas (气体) around us. It usually stays in the air for less than 2
weeks. It can become the rain which is good for plants. It can also become the snow and children love to play in it.
Do you know that the biggest snowflake (雪花) fell in 1887? It was even bigger than a dinner plate (盘子). Is it
surprising?
From water to electricity (电)
Water can run very fast. When it rains heavily, its speed through the air may reach at 20 miles an hour.
Because of this, people use moving water to make electricity. For example, people built the Baihetan Hydropower
Station (白鹤滩水电站) in Sichuan.

To support the employment (就业) of disabled people in Guangzhou, Starbucks has opened its first “Silent
Café” in China where almost half the staff are hearing impaired.
Fourteen out of the thirty staff members have trouble hearing, and so Starbucks has created a café that doesn’t
require customers to say anything—nor the staff to hear anything. “This might be the quietest Starbucks among the
over 3800 shops on the Chinese mainland,” says Leo Tsoi, Chief Operating Officer of Starbucks, China.
The newly opened “Silent Café” has a special ordering system where all food and drinks are numbered, letting
customers easily write down their order and allowing them to place orders without having to say a word.
Chen Siting, a staff member shares her thoughts about the idea. “We cannot hear you but would like to share a
tasty coffee with you,” says Siting. “I believe more people like me could find a career they dream about in the
future,” she continues.
Like Siting, Zhu Jieying, has been working at Starbucks for about seven years, making him its first hearing-
impaired coffee master. He has hopes that Starbucks could open more opportunities (机遇) for those who are
disabled, and encourage them to prove themselves and to explore more possibilities in life.
