The Miao Sisters Festival is held every year in Guizhou’s Taijiang County, where 97
percent of the 168,000 people there are from the ethnic(民族) Miao group. It is an ancient
tradition, which brings men and women together through food, gifts and music.
In the days before the festival, young women gather leaves and wild flowers, which they
use to dye sticky rice with bright colors. This brightly coloured rice, known as Sister Rice, gives
the festival its name.During the festival, the young women dress in beautiful traditional clothes
with large amounts of silver jewelry.
The festival includes parades, horse races and musical performances. But the real focus is the
interaction between the young women and the young men who visit from surrounding villages and
sing songs. In one traditional type of song,a man and woman take turns singing to each other,
and the first one to make a mistake loses the game. The loser must give the winner a gift, but the
winner is expected to give a gift in return too.
After meeting the men,the women send them home with a bamboo basket containing dyed
rice and hidden objects with special meanings. For example,a pair of chopsticks means she wants
to marry the man, while garlic shows that she is not interested.
One of several stories is about the festival’s beginning of a girl and a boy who fell in
love. The girl’s parents wanted her to marry her uncle’s son as it was traditional at the time. She
refused, and the boy likewise refused to marry anyone else. For a time, they could only meet in a
field and pass hidden messages to each other through rice in a bamboo basket. Finally, the pair
overcame their parents’ opposition and were allowed to marry.
The Miao Sisters Festival is perhaps the oldest festival in Asia that encourages love.

Cengiz Ozek sits at his desk in the poorly lit back office of his shadow theater near Taksim
Square in central Istanbul. The theater is one of the last in operation in the city.He holds a piece of
camel leather,a sheet of paper with some drawings on it,and a small cutter. In front of him are a
few bottles of paints that he will use to create jointed puppets(皮影人偶).Ozek, one of the most
influential contemporary Turkish puppeteers, hopes to appeal to a younger audience and boost the
culture of Turkish shadow theater.
“There might be around 50 people, more or less, who do shadow theater in Turkey
today, but only five or six of them are real professionals who are completely devoted to it,”
says Ozek while he works on a figure of Karagoz, the most famous figure in Turkish shadow
theater—so famous is the character that the art itself is often called Karagoz.
To date, scholars have not been able to determine where this type of theater began to
exist.Suggestions range from China to Central Asia, and from India to Byzantine Greece. Some
scholars have focused on Bursa, the first capital city of the Ottoman Empire(奥斯曼帝国),and
believe that the two main characters,Hacivat and Karagoz, were real people who lived in that
city at the time. The two men were construction workers who often told jokes to amuse their co-
workers, resulting in delays in the completion of their work.In the end, they were sentenced to
death. However, the people of Bursa missed them so much that they began to tell their stories in
the form of puppetry.
Ozek wants to open a Karagoz museum in his city in order to keep this art alive. He’s also
developing new characters to catch the attention of children.“We first try to attract them with
modern characters that they know ,and while they’re watching ,suddenly we bring out
Karagoz,” Ozek says.“We introduce him to them once again. When they watch it,they are
satisfied, and we are happy as well. And like that,Karagoz survives in a way.”

A.It came to Turkey from India directly.
B.It first appeared at a construction site.
C.It is now on the path to decline.
D.It is usually known as Hacivat.
11.What is stressed in the third paragraph?
A.The influence of shadow theater.
B.The origin of puppetry in Turkey.
C.The history of Bursa as a capital city.
D.The punishment in the Ottoman Empire.
12.Why does Ozek want to open a Karagoz museum?

Hurricane season can be wild and unpredictable. 1 Here are some ways you can beef up
your home security in hurricane weather, even if you need to move out.
2 That actually does nothing to ensure your safety in the powerful winds.Sticking to
hurricane shelters or plywood(胶合板) is the only way to go when it comes to protecting those
points of entry in hurricane conditions.Buy sheets of plywood, measure your windows and use
brackets(支架) to hold the plywood in place.
Sandbags are very useful. While sandbags won’t be able to help in the extreme storm, many
people will be able to prevent flooding and extensive damage to their belongings by placing
sandbags. 3 Any storm water that is kept out of your home is storm water that won’t be able
to damage the belongings inside your home,so sandbags are well worth having at your doorways
during a hurricane.
It’s important to prepare the inside of your home for strong winds and rain. But you should
also keep an eye on the outside of your house, too.Trim(修剪) trees, especially dead branches,
to prevent anything else that could fly through a window and cause damage during a hurricane. 4
You should also take pictures of expensive items like electronics and keep notes of their serial
numbers. 5 Also, there are always bad people out right after a storm. If the worst happens and
your home is broken into right after a bad storm, having pictures and detailed notes about what
was in your home prior to the hurricane will make it easier for police to track down stolen items.
A.You should have a camera at home.
B.It can be strong enough to resist the forceful winds.
C.Making sure nothing is loose in your yard is important.D.You may see people taping windows before a hurricane comes.
E.They will be able to effectively keep storm water out in many cases.
F.It will aid with your insurance company if anything needs to be replaced.
G.These dangerous storms can bring damage to your home and belongings.
