Icehouse and ice ticket
As early as Pre-Qin Dynasty, people used natural ice to keep food fresh and make cold drinks.
The Zhou royal court had a specialized department called “ice administration”. They collected
natural ice blocks each December to store in the icehouse. During the Qing Dynasty, “ice tickets”
were used and they were available only to officials and the rich.
Ice container
The most commonly used cooling tool is called “Jian”, which is a big container filled with ice.
It was made of clay in early Chinese history, and was later made of copper (铜). The “Jian” can beseen as an ancient refrigerator, which can be used to make cold drinks.
Hiding food in the well
During the Qin and Han dynasties, for common people, the most common way to cool off is
by using their wells. Some families put a pot in the well as a cold closet, or put food in a basket and
lowered the basket into the well with a rope.
Herbal drinks
During the Qing Dynasty, taking Chinese herbal medicine was popular in Beijing. In hot
summer, some people preferred to drink ice water, some boiled perilla leaves, and liquorice as
summer soup to keep off the heat. Ancient people also loved to make lotus seed soup in summer for
the benefit of strengthening the body.
21. What does “Jian” have the same function as?

Society looks down on people who collect the wastes of others, but what they don’t realize is
that they could get more money in one day than what they get in one week working at their daily
job from selling other people’s unwanted goods.
I am no “make-money-quick guru” but I have made a couple thousand dollars from selling
what others throw out to the garbage. As the saying goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
You don’t have to start a business. You could simply sell second-hand things people give away
and profit from it. In my high school days, I had my first experience selling an old pre-loved Logitech
keyboard to a buyer on Gumtree.com.au for $50. I remember how exciting it was for me to make
money from something I no longer needed. I technically made a $50 profit in less than an hour.
How to make $1,000 with $0 in a day?
Go on platforms such as Facebook market or Gumtree and find things people are giving away
for free in your local area, then sell them. I found an abundance of household items like cupboards, shelves, mirror cabinet, and chairs that sell very well. Don’t worry what people think of you,
remember that you could get a few hundred for those.
Reinvest your money and buy something with a higher value that someone might be happy to
get rid of, and sell that for a profit of $600, etc. Your action is not just about making money, but also
seeing it as using the earth’s resources efficiently and not wasting them in the trash.
If there is one thing I learned from this practice, it is that: there is always someone out there
who considers one man’s trash as treasure, no matter what the item is.
24. What may a “make-money-quick guru” do in paragraph 2?
A. A person who works in a company.
B. A person who throws unwanted things.
C. A person who makes money by selling second-hand things.
D. A person who teaches people how to make great profit.
25. How did the writer start his business?
A. By buying valuable things. B. By collecting others’ trash.
C. By selling his old things. D. By giving away useless things.
26. Why did the writer suggest others buy more valuable things?
A. To collect them for later use.
B. To sell them and get a higher profit.
C. To learn from the practice.
D. To get rid of the unwanted things.
27. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Sell Unwanted Things
B. Make Money in a New Business
C. One Person’s Trash, Another Person’s Cash
D. Live an Environmentally Friendly Life

By now, most of us have picked up at least one pandemic hobby. And there's a seemingly
common pandemic hobby trend: People who haven't been able to go anywhere are making imaginary
travel plans. Maybe you're among those who have spent hours researching locations-even though
you're not actually planning to travel. It turns out that you aren't alone. People who seem to be sticking to public safety
recommendations are still planning trips they don't intend to book. And, when I suddenly found
myself addicted to an imaginary girls' trip to Joshua Tree, I wondered whether this was a healthy
distraction.
,
"It's an escapist imagination " said Regine Galanti, a psychologist, adding that there's nothing
wrong with escapism during a global pandemic.
On the one hand, distractions are often beneficial right now. We are a full year into living with
COVID-19 as a pandemic, and that means you've probably had to navigate a range of emotions
like discomfort, sadness, or even boredom. So any hobby that doesn't harm anyone or endanger your
well-being is probably a worthy attempt.
Even if vacation planning is your happy place, Dr. Galanti suggests you "actually think about
what you're trying to achieve." Why? "Maybe what you're saying is, I need a vacation from work,"
Dr. Galanti explains. "Then take three days off even if you are not going anywhere. "When you
figure out what you're looking for, you might be able to find a small socially distanced adventure in
your backyard or a quiet place. Vacation planning is a good way to spend some time, but there might
be an even better way to get what you're desiring.
Anyway, when uncertainty is all around us, creating things to look forward to isn't a terrible
idea. And when things are safer, you'll have all your plans in place.
28. Why do people make imaginary travel plans during the pandemic?
A. To develop a new hobby. B. To stay safe and sound.
C. To be distracted from reality. D. To get ready for future travel.
29. Which of the following can replace the word "navigate" underlined in paragraph 4?
A. Express. B. Balance. C. Adapt to. D. Deal with.
30. What is the writer's attitude towards imaginary travel plans?
A. Objective. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D.
Unclear.
31. Which section of the newspaper does the text probably come from?
A. Figures. B. Lifestyle.
C. Food and recipe. D. Science and technology.
DThese days, many gyms require clients to wear masks or face coverings. The good news:
research suggests they don’t actually hold up your performance.
Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan gathered a group of 7 men and 7 women,
ranging from slightly inactive to excellent cyclists and tested the effects of wearing a three-layer
cloth face mask, a surgical mask, and no mask on their exercise performance.
The study participants started with a brief warm-up on a fixed bike, then took a progressive
intensity exercise test, during which it was vital for them to keep the same pedal rate while the
resistance was continually increased until exhaustion (疲惫不堪). Something like the heart rate was
recorded every 30 seconds.
The results suggested that wearing a mask had no effect on performance or muscle oxygen
levels. Since there was no difference in time to exhaustion between conditions, the highest power
reached at the end of each test was similar in mask and no-mask conditions for all participants,
Professor Chilibeck explained. Researchers also did not see any effects of the masks during exercise
on blood oxygen levels, which wouldn’t decrease if breathing was not affected.
And while droplet (飞沫) spread was not measured, all masks used were tested in a previous
study in which they were shown to effectively minimize droplet spread, according to Chilibeck.
Though the participants represented a wide range of fitness levels, it’s important to note that these
tests were conducted on a very small sample size, and more research is needed on larger populations
to draw sweeping conclusions about the general population.
32. How did the researchers draw the conclusion?
A. By doing medical tests. B. By conducting an experiment.
C. By observing normal cyclists. D. By making brief analysis.
33. What will happen if masks block your performance?
A. Your heart rate may keep stable. B. You might produce less droplet.
C. You will feel more tired than before. D. Your blood oxygen levels will drop.
34. What is the author’s attitude to the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Why Should We Train with Masks?
B. Can We Train While Wearing Masks?
C. Do Masks Affect Our Performance?D. Why Don’t Masks Worsen Our Performance?
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

“I’m sorry” are two very important words that play a big part in daily life. You might apologize
while squeezing through a crowd or using the last of the printer paper at work. It’s easy to say “I’m
sorry”, but true apologies are a different story. 36 Or you may wonder how to properly demand
an apology if the other person is at fault? With the following tips, you’ll find these are not hard.
Apologize sincerely. A genuine apology can help repair your relationship and even your
reputation — you’re showing that you can be trusted to do what’s right. But your relationship will
remain tense if your apology seems casual. 37
Apply specific principles. A meaningful apology comes down to the three R’s — regret,
responsibility and remedy (补救办法). Firstly, communicate your regret. Show the other person you
have recognized your error and can relate to his/her pain. Then take complete responsibility.
38 Lastly, show that you’re working to improve the situation. Offer to make up for the harm
you caused or promise you wouldn’t repeat it again.
39 If you’re the offended (冒犯) party, describe what’s changed in the relationship and
your true feeling. For example, you could say, “Although there’s a disagreement between you and
me, I want us to be friends again. But I’ve been hurt, and I’d like an apology. I need you to
acknowledge what you’ve done.”
Don’t expect immediate forgiveness. Most people hope for immediate forgiveness while
apologizing, but that may mean you don’t respect the others’ emotions and all you care about is
yourself. 40 After all, they were hurt and it would take them a while to recover.
A. Ask for an apology if necessary.
B. Don’t make excuses or blame the victim.
C. So you have to be truly willing to apologize.
D. Say sorry first if both parties are at fault.
E. You may have trouble finding the right way to send meaningful apologies.
F. So give them some time to come out of the pain after your apology.
G. You should make sure your words are acceptable.

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the
school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with
unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved
goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this
gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something
like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the
badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great
expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the
numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into
a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-
aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles.
Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile
and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied
on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or
riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom.
But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange
to me and me to her.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Today she showed up in a raincoat.
