完整的短文。
Initially, I totally believed that Daddy wanted a boy. I could just imagine his disappointment when I was born.
What always frustrated me was that he never tried hiding his feelings from me. He had hoped a boy who would
help him with the farm and finally step into his shoes. But a girl…
I tried to do everything just to please Daddy. Not only did I get up early to help with the housework, but also
some tidy work on the farm. What’s more, I went home straight from school, expecting that I was needed. But he
didn’t seem to be moved by those at all, let alone putting on a smile.
The year I turned thirteen was the 100th birthday of our town. The town council decided to hold a parade(游
行), and they wanted a young lady who could lead the parade. The families in the area were asked to send pictures
of their children. Every parent in the area hoped that their daughter would be chosen, every parent except Daddy.
Mommy sent in a picture of me without telling me. I was always so busy being the boy Daddy wanted, and I
never considered having the chance to lead the parade. So it was quite a surprise when the town council stopped by
one evening to tell us I had been chosen. Mommy was excited. As I anticipated, Daddy showed no interest in thematter.
The day of the big parade finally arrived. I was dressed in a beautiful white dress. At first I felt shy-I’d hardly
ever worn dresses. But soon I felt like a princess in a fairy tale.

【答案】
As the parade passed down the main street of our town, I saw Mommy and Daddy on the side. Compared to
Mum who rejoiced with wild excitement the moment she saw me, Daddy just remained cold, poker-faced. The
ignited happiness inside me suddenly vanished into thin air. “Hey, you look so gorgeous!” I was grabbed back to
the parade by those compliments shouted out from the crowd. I straightened up my body, and resumed my duty of
leading the parade. Looking at those smiling faces on the side, I surprisingly noticed that my mood was improving,
especially when I suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure, my father, moving to the end of the parade together
with my proceeding. Maybe I was expecting something. But what was it?
As I went back from the parade, Daddy stood in front of the gate, smiling. As if being kissed by God, I leapt
three feet high, or even pinched myself. I murmured,“Was Daddy smiling to me? Was that a dream?” What
confirmed my idea was Daddy’s warm hand. He stroked my head, praising that I did quite a good job, and I was the
best girl he had ever known. Never in my wildest dream had I imagined that those words came out from his mouth.
I finally proved myself! I was finally accepted as a girl! When I was basking in the afterglow of my father’s
recognition, it suddenly dawned on me that we all have our own glittering merits, and being a true and confident
self is always a way out.

I like staying overnight at my Gramma’s house — that is, until Gramma starts telling me how wonderful my
cousin Maya is. Then it’s Maya this and Maya that until I don’t ever want to hear another word about her.
That’s why I wasn’t too excited when Gramma called me on the phone to “come on over and bring your
pajamas.” When I got there, it was worse than I’d expected. There, in Grandpa’s big leather rocker, sat Maya, all
dressed up and formal-looking and wearing fancy shoes as if she’d just been to a party.
“Surprise, Kristen!” Gramma said. “Your cousin Maya and her parents have traveled in from the East Coast on
business. Maya gets to stay with us this afternoon.” Gramma chattered away about how excited she’d been for this
surprise get-together, and how cousins ought to get to know each other better.
I hung my baseball cap in the closet and set my backpack by the stairway, all the time smiling and nodding as
if I’d been waiting forever for this chance to spend an afternoon with Maya. Grandpa’s chair squawked (咯咯叫) as
Maya rocked back and forth. It’s the chair I like best in the house, the one I usually sit in. I sat down on the sofa
across from her.
Shortly, Gramma went off to the kitchen to “see about some lunch,” she’d said. That left me stuck in the livingroom with rocking Maya.
She was still small but taller than I’d remembered her from her last visit four years ago. She was good at small
talk, though, and was chatting away about how nice it was to see me again. But I could tell that she didn’t really
think so. The last time she was here, we’d had hours of fun together building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows.
After that, I’d heard about her only through Gramma’s tales. Maya taking piano lessons. Maya learning math.
Maya, Maya, Maya. Now Maya was here, looking great with the latest haircut and a fancy dress.

【答案】
Glancing down at my jeans and my old sneakers, I wished I hadn’t come. A rush of shame flooded over me as
I compared myself to Maya-Gramma’s favorite. She was smarter, prettier, and more talented than I could ever hope
to be. The thought of being loved less by Gramma because of Maya was unbearable. “I hear you like to skate,”
Maya’s words crashed through my thoughts. What she announced was totally beyond my expectation. Astonished
and speechless, I wondered how she knew about my skating. “I hear you are the captain of your basketball team.
Even better, you are always competitive and aggressive in any sports activities,” she exclaimed, her eyes full of
envy and admiration.
“How do you know all these things about me?” I asked Shrugging and looking down, Maya told me that my
Gramma wrote about me in her letters and that I was her favorite person to write about. Numb with shock, I stared
at Maya’s face, and the only thing that came to my mind was, “You won the first prize in the math competition,
didn’t you?” Maya looked up, confused. I explained that my Gramma talked about her all the time. We laughed,
chatted about everything, and had fun building caves out of Gramma’s sofa pillows. Time flew by, and as Maya and
her parents drove off, Gramma and I waved goodbye until they were out of sight. “Isn’t Maya a lovely child!”
Gramma grinned. “She’s really nice,” I agreed, now understanding that Gramma had two favorites.

The Right Thing
My mother worked as a housekeeper and she was often given used toys as well as many other goodies by her
clients. My elder sister and I always loved sharing the recycled books and board games brought home by my
beloved mom, which we considered great gifts life presented us.
The long-awaited Christmas finally approached. One December day, an old model toy car arrived in the load
of goods. It was as long as my forearm and took both hands to lift. My sister didn’t want it, so it was all mine. I
immediately set down to wiping it clean and polishing it to a bright candy-apple red. It turned to be a thing of
beauty, and I became overjoyed at possessing it. My elder sister was amazed at the newly-polished, refreshing toy
car, with a hint of regret and envy in her eyes.
As was planned, our relatives from France came to visit us that Christmas. It was a time when the family bond
got strengthened. I shared the prized toy car with Alex, my young French cousin. Eyes glued to it, he fell in love
with the wonderful, shiny red automobile the instant he saw it. It was a rare moment to see him feeling so relieved
and happy. He’d been unlucky so far in life, suffering severe, life-threatening illnesses as a child, leaving him
mentally and physically stuck and the family starved of cash. Of course, such lovely toys like my dear model car
were unreachable dreams for him.
Seeing Alex’s consuming thrill brought by the red car, I was seized by immense joy as well. But contrary to
Alex’s excitement, a voice inside me constantly reminded, “Watch out! He’d keep it for himself.”, which got mefaintly worried. I followed my cousin for fear of something.
My mother also noticed Alex’s fondness for the car. Approaching me, she asked gently in a low voice, “Would
you like to give it to Alex?”

【答案】
Giving or keeping? I struggled with myself. Giving it? Hardly could I imagine life without the model car!
After all, it was my most precious treasure, which I had been proud of. My heart kept aching at the prospect of
giving it away. Nope! I shook my head determinedly. Glancing at my mother’s expectant eyes, I couldn’t help
sobbing. Keeping it? Definitely, it would otherwise upset Alex. Torn between the two tough choices, I was totally at
a loss. Nevertheless, deep down, I could feel my affection to Alex. Yep! I resolved to do the right thing.
In the moment of parting, my model car went with Alex. Though I was crushed to see it go, my heart sang
when I saw his beaming face as he tightly clutched it. Seeing the thumbs-up from my mother and sister, I did swell
with relief, pride and joy, for I knew it was not a gift; to some extent, it was our concern and love for him. Plus,
sharing the model car also strengthened our bond, which, I was fully convinced, would always uplift him. An effort
made for the happiness of others lifted us above ourselves as well.

It was eight o’clock on a cold spring night. Our apartment was full of the artwork of an energeic five-year-old.
The house was in a mess.
I was so tired that night. I had depended on a walking stick to go anywhere for seven weeks, recovering from
an operation, and I couldn’t find a way to cheer myself up.
The phone rang - for the sixth time in less than an hour. I knew who it was. My mother had been suffering
from dementia (痴呆). Though we visited her every few days, she believed that her daughters had not visited in
months. She thought that her friend Jimmy never wanted to see her again, but he called her and visited weekly.
She had no idea that she had repeated the things she was about to say a million times today and a million times
the day before. She had no idea that I had an operation, nor could she remember her own grandaughter’s name. She
forgot most of her own past and she drifted in the present. Also, she was lonely.
This time I cast my anger at the easiest target: my mother, the very victim of this chance horror. “Mom!” I
shouted. “We visited two days ago! You have to believe me, and even if you don’t, I cannot talk anymore!
Everything is fine!”
Silence. Then: “I was only calling to say hi. Why are you shouting?!” she continued. “Do you have a minute?”
“No, Mom, I don’t. I can’t stand this!”
I sat on the couch, defeated. I was suddenly aware of all that my daughter was watching me shouting at my
mother and losing my patience. I have failed at being a good example to my daughter.注意:

over. My impatience to my mother was completely exposed to her. What a shame! Then my daughter reached for
the phone. “Hi, Grandma!” I heard my mother exclaim through the receiver: “Sweetheart! How are you? Did you
go to school today?” My daughter replied with a soft voice. The next moment witnessed their happy conversation.
Shock washed over me when I heard my daughter singing to her grandmother.
After many kissing noises, they eventually hung up. Words failed me when I saw my daughter’s caring for her
grandmother with extreme patience. I was ashamed of my losing temper. Touched by her warm behavior, I was soft
inside, not tired or angry any more. Immediately I dialed the number of my mother. It was my daughter who taught
me what the patience was.

I was sorting through old photos with my mother, looking for a specific picture of my father. I’d recently
gotten a scanner and was in the process of digitizing our family pictures.
“Where on earth is that picture of Mumpsy and Dad?” I asked. I’d seen the picture in a frame at my grandma
Virgie’s house when I was a child. It showed my father as a boy, in a suit, holding his beloved Boston terrier (波士
顿狗), Mumpsy. It was one of my favorite pictures of him, and the only one I hadn’t found yet.
“Maybe Jean has it,” said Mom. “We could ask her.”
I looked at Mom as if she had three eyes. She could not be serious!
Grandma Virgie had had two sons, Dad and Uncle Ralph, who was married to Jean. Mom and Jean had always
had a difficult relationship. Jean would say mean and unfavorable things to Mom while Mom tried to rise above it.
Grandma Virgie wanted to help but there wasn’t much she could do. After Grandma passed away, Uncle Ralph’s
family stayed in the house and took care of what Grandma left. My parents bought a new house and we moved out.
As Mom and Aunt Jean was not on good terms, they purposely broke contact with each other.
With that, any connection we had with Uncle Ralph and Aunt Jean fell apart, and our big family split in two.
Both my dad and my uncle were dead now. Mom and I had no contact with Jean.
Yet here was Mom, proposing to reach out to Jean nearly 30 years later.
“I’m in my eighties,” Mom said with a shrug. “Jean’s just a little younger. Neither of us has many years left.
Why not give it a try?”
I couldn’t argue with that.

【答案】
Mom looked up Jean in the dusty phonebook and decided to call her. Unexpectedly, Jean answered the call.
Jean said she had inherited boxes and boxes of Grandma Virgie’s old photos, but they weren’t organized or labeled,
so Jean invited Mom over to help her look for the picture of Dad and Mumpsy. Mom agreed. They set a date for a
few days later. But I was still a little worried. “If she acts the way she used to, I’ll turn right around and leave,” she
promised me right before she left for Jean’s house.
I thought Mom would be back in an hour or so, but she didn’t return until close to dinner. After she came back
she told me what happened. She and Jean said Hi and then sat down at the kitchen table to look through photos.
After a while, Jean apologized for the way she’d behaved years before. Then Jean took out a photo album of
Virgie’s and suddenly the picture of Dad and Mumpsy caught their eyes. They both laughed. After Mom’s visit,
Aunt Jean, Mom and I started getting together regularly. We all have framed copies of that picture of Dad and
Mumpsy for it’s a reminder of how we were drawn back together as a family.

I was in 7th grade when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very sudden and unexpected for
our family and obviously I was beaten. I tried my best to balance my first year of middle school and my home life,
even if I knew this was impossible. I hated coming home from school every day for fear of what I would see when I
got home. I hated seeing my mom sick all the time; she was not herself and all I wanted was for her to stop
treatment and get better. Luckily, I had lots of support from my family, friends, and teachers during this hard time to
help get me through it.
At the beginning of the year, I was determined to stay on track with my homework and studying and get
through my first year at middle school successfully. Slowly, I started to become more distracted while at home with
taking care of my mom, cleaning the house and helping my grandma cook our meals. While I was at school, I could
escape and put my mom’s sickness in the back of my mind while I hung out with my friends and enjoyed playing. I
noticed that my quiz and test grades were increasingly getting worse, but I never brought this to the attention of my
mom because I did not want to worry her. Eventually, all of my grades were lower than C’s.
I knew that I was not doing well at school, and I needed to get my grades back up. I knew that a lot of my
teachers were cutting me some unimportant work because they knew what was happening at home. Ms. Zazoski,
my English teacher was the most supportive teacher that I have ever had and I am so glad that I was in her class that
year.

One day my teacher had me stay after school to have a talk with her. As I stepped up to her huge wooden
desk, I could feel myself getting more and more nervous, surely knowing that she would have a talk with me about

said, in the most kind tone. “Thank you so much.” I said as she hugged me, warmth and love like my mother
melting in my whole body.
That was the motivation that I needed to improve my grades. Walking out of her office, I was extremely
relieved, as though a 1000 pound weight was lifted off my shoulders. It warmed my heart to know that even with

Two things changed my life: my mother and a white plastic bike basket. I have thought long and hard about it
and it’s true. I would be a different person if my mom hadn’t turned a silly bicycle accessory(配件) into a life
lesson I carry with me today.
We had to earn our allowance by doing chores around the house. I can still remember how long it took to
polish the legs of our coffee table. My brothers can no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. Like the
two little girls growing up at the White House, we made our own beds (no one left the house until that was done)
and picked up after ourselves. We had to keep track of our belongings, and if something was lost, it was not
replaced.
It was summer and, one day, my mother drove me to the bike shop to get a tire fixed — and there it was in the
window. White, shiny, plastic and decorated with flowers, the basket winked at me and I knew — I knew — I had
to have it.
“It’s beautiful,” my mother said when I pointed it out to her. “What a neat basket.”
I tried to hold off at first. I played it cool for a short while. But then I guess I couldn’t stand it any longer:
“Mom, please can I please, please get it? I’ll do extra chores for as long as you say. I’ll do anything, but I need that
basket. I love that basket. Please, Mom. Please?”
I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back while we both stared at what I believed was the coolest thing
ever, “If you save up you could buy this yourself.”
“By the time I make enough it’ll be gone!”
“Maybe Roger here could hold it for you,” she smiled at Roger, the bike guy.
“He can’t hold it for that long, Mom. Someone else will buy it. Please, Mom, please?”
“There might be another way,” she said.

And so our paying plan unfolded. My mother bought the beautiful basket and put it safely in some hiding
place I couldn’t find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing savings increased by extra work here and there
(washing the car, helping my mother make dinner, delivering or collecting things on my bike that already lookednaked without the basket in front). And then, weeks later, I counted, re-counted and jumped for joy. Oh, happy day!
I made it! I finally had the exact amount we’d agreed upon.
A few days later, A neighborhood girl appeared with the exact same basket. I rode hard and fast home to tell
my mother about this disaster. This horrible turn of events. And then came the lesson I’ve taken with me through
my life: “Honey, your basket is extra-special,” Mom said with smile, gently wiping away my hot tears. “Your
basket is special because you paid for it yourself.” Mother’s words make me suddenly see the light, and since then I
know that the fruit of labor is sweetest in the world.

Like every boy there ever was, what Kyle Hrenwood most wanted in this world was a dog. Unfortunately for
Kyle, his mom didn’t think he was responsible enough.
The day before Kyle’s thirteenth birthday, he went to the park and found a woman sobbing. He was
immediately worried. Was the woman hurt?
He bent over and said “Miss, Are you OK? Do you want me to call anyone?” The woman shook her head and
said, “My husband died two weeks ago, and I feel alone. We’d been together for thirty years. I can’t stand the
silence inside that house. I’m Deidre. What’s your name?”
Kyle introduced himself and they talked for a long time. Kyle’s encounter with Deidre left him very sad, and
he decided to go home. “Mom,” he said. “I don’t want to get married.” “Why not?” asked Kyle’s mom. “What if
you spend thirty or forty years with someone,” Kyle said. “And then he is dead, and you’re alone?” Mom said,
“Then you’ll miss out on love. You see, if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off fromhappiness. You may discover those thirty years alone are not worth living.”
The next day, he had one of the biggest surprises and greatest joys of his life—a puppy! That was when he
remembered Deidre was alone in her huge house.
A few hours later, Kyle knocked on Deidre’s door holding the puppy. He said, “Today is my birthday, and my
parents gave me this puppy. You need this puppy more than I do.” “Give my heart to an animal just so it can die in a
few years’ time?” Deidre asked bitterly. “I don’t think so. I don’t need any more pain in my life!”
“My mom said that if you protect yourself from feeling pain, you’re cutting yourself off from happiness. too,”
Kyle said.
“You’re right, Kyle!” Deidre said. “I do need this puppy. Maybe you can visit us both; I’ve never had a dog
before and may need some advice!”
Over the next few years, Kyle and Deidre, and Max (that was the dog’s name) became great friends. Then
Kyle’s dad was offered a job in another state, and the family moved away.

【答案】
Kyle grew up and fell in love, and his wedding was drawing near. He found his happiness, a girl he loved very
much. He remembered something his mother once said to him: “If you protect yourself from feeling pain, you are
cutting yourself off from happiness”. So for so many years, he has allowed himself to treat the people around him
with a loving heart, until he found the most beloved girl. Then he thought of his old friend Deidre, whom he wanted
to invite to his wedding. So he sent Deidre an invitation. Finally, on the wedding day, Deidre showed up with a dog.
“This is Gemma, Max’s daughter,” Deidre said. Kyle was shocked at first, but soon he realized what Deidre
had said. Deidre told him that Max had died a few years ago. After Kyle moved away, Max had found his true love,
a lovely dog. They also have their own puppies. “Unbelievable”, Kyle said to Dietrich. Since then, Kyle has learned
more about the true meaning of trying to find happiness.

My parents grew up poor. But as a family, we were comfortable, though we didn’t have much what would be
considered luxuries. One year, my father went on a trip to Italy and brought my mother an opal ring. It was her
favorite stone, and she cherished that ring. It represented Dad’s love for her.
Dad died at the age of 53 in 1980 after a grueling battle with cancer. Mom was working at Burlington Coat
Factory Department store. She usually wore the ring to work. Over the years, the ring became impossible for my
Mom to wear because of her swollen knuckles (指关节). I had the ring fitted with a clasp so that Mom could wear
it again. She took great pride in the frequent compliments as she got on that ring.
One day during her shift, the ring slipped off. She didn’t realize it until the following day. Mom was sad. The
ring did not have a high monetary value, but it meant as much to her as life itself. I decided to go and look for it.
I encountered Chloe, one of my Mom’s co-workers at my Mom’s workplace. She led me to the store where
Mom worked, and then left. It was packed with clothes, racks and tables. I started row by row crawling on the floor
to see if I could find the ring underneath all the clothes. When I got to the last row and hadn’t found the ring, the
thought occurred to me that it might have fallen into the pocket of a coat as my Mom was hanging or rearranging
the clothes. I started feeling around in the pockets of some of the coats, but quickly abandoned. There were at least
20,000 pieces of clothing in that department. The attempt seemed useless.

【答案】
I stood by a small table in disappointment when Chloe came in. “Have you found the ring?” she asked
curiously. “No, I have already got to the last row but in vain. Maybe I should search all the coats here.” Looking at
over 20,000 pieces clothing, Chloe lent a helping hand, “It’s not an easy task.” We opened one pocket after another,
going to the second room, and then the third. We two were sweating heavily with red faces. Suddenly, I burst out
screaming, “Yes! That’s it!” Chole ran to me quickly. She patted my arm gently, “tell your mom, dear.”
I called my Mom and now I was choking back tears. “Mom, good news!” I could tell how happy my Mom was
by her laughter. After all, it meant a lot. I thanked Chole and went home. The moment I stepped out the store, the
night sky was lit up by flashes of light quietly. Tring as it was, the recovery of this precious ring bought greater
pleasure.

One of my leachers once asked my class what our favorite memory was. My leacher asked for the moment in
which “you fell the best; you fell that you had the world in the palms of your hand.” Some described amazing
awards; other described winning a tournament. My answer, however, invited giggles and hesitant smiles. Why?
Because I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmates’ stares and
mockery, because I knew there was more to the story.
My elder sister and I shared a typical sisterly relationship: we couldn’t stand each other. I was an annoyance to
her. Any sort of conversation we had usually ended up fighting. Gradually, I started to learn to be totally indifferent;
perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern. I avoided her,
and she ignored me. Deep inside, it hurt. So that was how it was between us. She was only a sister in name. I truly
believed that we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received the bike that Christmas, which was great, until I
realized that I had no idea how to ride it. My mom had long abandoned any attempt to teach me. I had proven to be
a frustrating student. I took it upon myself to learn, a little bit each day. It was no different. I was coming to the end
of my daily one-hour torture(折磨). I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.

I guess that was what caused my sister to come outside. At first, I was skeptical and tense, as I assumed that
she would begin to tease me or at least burst out laughing. However, she did neither. I hunched my shouldersforward and turned my face away, tears trickling down my cheeks. She gently picked my bike up, uttering in a
reassuring tone, “I can teach you how to ride.” Dumbstruck, I raised my head and stared at her in stunned silence.
Next hours saw my sister steadily hold my bike when my feel faltered. She never once let me fall, patiently
teaching me how to ride a bike.
“I made it,” I exclaimed with delight. A ripple of happiness bubbled up in my heart. I turned around,
beaming a warm smile at my sister. She gave me an approving nod, eyes gleaming with amusement. That was the
day I had a taste of what real sisterly intimacy could be like. For three hours, three wonderful, blissful hours, we
learned to ride a bike, which was the perfect harmony I had longed for. We still occasionally have our random spats
and bitter rivalries, but since that day, it has been easier to get along because I know my sister will be there for me
when I need her.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her! She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers
to support the family. There was one day during elementary school when my mom came to say hello to me. I was
so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!” I wanted to bury myself. I
also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a
laughing stock, why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about
what I had said, because I was full of anger, totally unaware of her feelings.
I wanted to get out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied real hard, and finally got a
chance to go abroad for further study. Then, I got married with a local man. I bought a house of my own. I had kids
of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.
Years passed, and I didn’t hear from my mom ever since I had left home. Sometimes I would think of her but
every time thinking of the embarrassment brought by her embarrassingly one-eyed look, I still hoped that life
would stay the same way and she would never appear in my life again.
Then one day, my mom came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her
grandchildren. When she stood by the door, my children was scared to cry and ran to me. I calmed them down and
asked my husband to lead them into the house.
I turned to her, looking at her weary face with more wrinkles and her gray hair. Obviously she was older and
life surely didn’t treat her well. However, the uninvited visit still made me angry.

I asked her why she showed up at our front door uninvited. A disappointed and bitter smile flashing through
her face, she finally gathered her strength and courage to tell me the reason for her appearance. “I’ve been sorry for
the embarrassment I have brought to you because of my one-eye look.” she said, “But even with one eye, I still see
no one but you as the whole world to me.” Somehow, a sense of guilty began to rise in my heart. She continued, “I
came today because I got cancer. With the remaining time, I’d like to know my grandchildren and, more
importantly, my daughter is doing well.”I was saddened by the news she just shared, but what truly astonished me was what she told me next about her
eve. She paused for a while so as to catch her breath. Then she revealed the secret of that lost eye. “When you were
two years old, an accident happened and you lost the eyesight of your one eye. Unable to bear the fact that my baby
would be living in a half-dark world, I volunteered to donate my one eye to you.” I was totally petrified on hearing
the truth, tears of regret pouring down my face. “Don’t cry my baby, because you will see this beautiful world for
me even when I am no longer there”. Rushing to her, I hugged her so tightly that I told myself I would never leave
her again.

It was just the three of us-my parents and me. I always felt it a pity that I would never have a chance to know
what grandparents’ “spoiling” love would be like.
My dad is a truck driver, and when I was little, he was gone most of the time, delivering wire and other
supplies around the Midwest. My mom is a devoted teacher, always busy switching between looking after her only
child and her many students.
We lived in a small house in Brighton, Colorado, in a neighborhood of 1970s old houses. We moved there on
my third birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Arlene handing me strawberries from her garden through a holein the chain-link fence. She and her husband, Bill, lived next door.
Arlene spent a lot of time working in the garden, and I was always talking to her from our yard. I think what
drew me to Arlene and Bill is that they never got tired of listening to me. I also think Arlene saw a lot of herself in
me-we were both lonely, anxious-and that may be why she always took the time to listen to me. Bill too. It was a
wonderful connection.
One day, my parents asked Bill and Arlene whether they’d watch me while they went out. This worked well
for everyone, so it became a somewhat frequent occurrence. Arlene and Bill didn’t have kids. They had a spare
room in their house, which became “my” room. I had boxes of toys and books in that room. Arlene and I would do
crafts together. Bill taught me how to ride a bike and later how to fly a kite. It was his company that made father’s
constant absence not so unbearable.
When I was about five, I had an idea. My parents were watching TV when I spat it out, “what if I adopted Bill
and Arlene as my grandparents?”

My parents said I could ask them tomorrow. The next day, heart pounding in my chest, I knocked on Bill and
Arlene’s door, sat down in their living room and stammered out my question tentatively, “Will you guys care to be
my grandparents?” At these words, they were petrified with surprise and the room fell into an awkward silence.
“Maybe they are not so fond of me as I thought.” I murmured to myself, doubts crowding in on me. I was about to
sneak out when my friends reached out their arms and embraced me tightly. “Of course!” they responded
enthusiastically, tears of joy brimming in their eyes.
From the day I adopted them, I called Bill and Arlene Grandpa and Grandma. They even went to great lengths
to print out an adoption certificate, and it hung on their living room wall proudly. Over the years, my deargrandparents supported me in all my gloomy days, encouraged me to pursue dreams regardless of numerous
obstacles, and imparted their invaluable wisdom to me selflessly. I could find no words to express how grateful and
fortunate I felt for their presence in my life. However, it was when they told me in their last days that how much joy
and comfort I had brought into their otherwise tedious life that I truly became the luckiest grandson in the world.

“What dance will we be performing for the competition this year?” a student from my high school dance team
asked eagerly. I hesitated, knowing that our team was not as skilled or experienced as the others in the competition.
“I was thinking,” I said, “maybe we would skip the competition and focus on improving our technique for our end-
of-year performance.” “NO!” the team protested. “We’ve got to compete!” “It’s a tradition!”
Indeed, trophies and medals lined the shelves of the dance studio from the past successes of previous teams.
But a change in school policies, with an emphasis on academics, had reduced our dance team to a small group oftwelve dancers who struggled to execute even the simplest of dance moves. “I’ll have to think about it,” I said,
hoping they would understand the difficulty of our situation. But their enthusiasm only grew, and they begged and
pleaded every day to participate in the competition. To protect their pride, I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good
enough. But I wasn’t a miracle worker. And so I hesitated about this dilemma.
Finally, one day, I stepped into the dance studio. “Look at the clock!” I demanded. “We’ve wasted two full
minutes because some of you don’t have your choreography ( 编 舞 ) memorized. If we are entering the
competition…” The rest of my sentence was lost in cheers of delight and applause. “From now on,” I continued
when the noise subsided, “you will find the day’s practice plan on the board. You will work harder than you’ve ever
worked before, focusing on improving your technique, stamina, and flexibility. And if one of these rules is broken,
we will not compete.”
I was certain they would fail to keep this contract, and no one would be embarrassed. But the dancers
remained focused, following the rules strictly. Each day witnessed their diligence: practicing their turns, leaps, and
extensions, learning new dance styles, and rehearsing their routine. Their progress was so remarkable that even I
began to believe in their dream.
When the competition day finally arrived, the team felt ready and confident to take on the world! Their eyes,
however, opened wide when they saw the other teams with their impressive choreography, skillful movements, and
stunning costumes.

【答案】
Then came the turn for my team. As they stepped onto the stage, I saw their nervousness, but also their
determination to succeed. They began to dance, and I watched as their movements flowed together, flawlessly
performing each step with precision and grace. They were not the most advanced team, but they danced with heart
and passion, giving it their all. And as they finished their performance, the audience erupted in applause.
After all the teams had performed, we waited for the results. As the judges discussed, I could see the anxiety
in some of my dancers’ eyes. They were so focused on winning that they forgot the true purpose of their hard work:to improve and grow as dancers. And when the results were announced, we did not win first place. But as I looked
at my team, I saw the pride and joy in their eyes. They had performed with grace and confidence, and they had done
their best. And at that moment, I realized that their success was not measured by a trophy or medal, but by the
growth and progress they had made as dancers.

My Big Solo (独唱)
The day had finally arrived: the day of my big solo. Everyone was there; my mom and dad and my little
brother. And it was a big event: the Spring Fling Choir Concert. The whole class was dressed up. My name was on
the cover of the program in bright yellow characters. I couldn’t believe it when I saw my name. Not that it was my
name, but that it wasn’t Renee’s. Renee and I had been classmates since kindergarten. She was always ahead of me.
Dance class needs a big finish? Renee was picked. The school plays? Renee would have the leads while I was cast
as her mother or sister or neighbor. I even played her dog once. The only time I ever came in ahead of Renee was atroll call (点名). Cindy comes before Renee. I count that as a victory!
The choir concert tryouts were stressful. We waited in the library as Ms. Jenkins called us individually into the
choir room. By the time she called me, I was shaking. When I came back to the library, Renee smiled at me. Ms.
Jenkins called her name and Renee calmly followed her. She was still calm and smiling when her tryout was over
When Ms. Jenkins announced who had made the special choral group (合唱队), I wasn’t surprised when
Renee’s name was on her list and mine wasn’t. “So, what else is new?” I said under my breath Sudden clapping
brought me out of my bad mood. Everyone was looking at me. I’ve missed something here, I thought. Ms. Jenkins
smiled at me and said, “Cindy, you will have to start practicing with me.The solos take extra preparation.” Solo? I
got the solo? I glanced over at Renee. She smiled broadly and gave me the thumbs-up sign. Oh, that’s another thing.
She is always so nice
Now the day had come. We filed onto the stage and took our places. I was front and center. Ms. Jenkins raised
her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. My parents were smiling at me, cameras flashing.

【答案】
My big moment come. The spotlight flicked over me and then circled me in its bright light Ms. Jenkins
nodded at me and signaled me to start. But I, stunned by the pressure and attention, froze, the note sticking in my
throat as the choir kept singing softly behind me. Ms. Jenkins began to look a little worried. At that very moment,
from behind me, Renee gave me a gentle poke and whispered, “you can do it, Cindy.” My turn came again.
Encouraged by her, I took a deep breath, opened my mouth and sang out as loudly as I could.
The rest of the solo went well. And when the concert was over, the applause was thunderous. When we filed
off the stage, my family met me with praise and hugs. Renee was next to hug me. It felt awkward. “Thanks,
Renee,” was all I could get myself to say. “It was nothing,” she said, flashing me her usual sunny smile, “You’ve
always been there for me all these years! That’s what friends are for.” “You’re right,” I said slowly, beginning to
like the feeling of being her friend, and hugged her tightly “That’s what friends are for.”

Moving In
My eighty-five-year-old mother offered that familiar tilt (歪头) of the head, the one that told me something
was up. I tensed my shoulders and bit my lip, waiting for whatever was coming next.
I could handle it. She was predictable, though dramatic. I expected her to express her thoughts on the latest
news or share the senior community news.
Instead, she calmly said, as though she were sharing her dinner menu, “I’m going to downsize and sell my
house and nearly everything I own.” The breaking news was followed by a matter of fact stare.
“Do what?” I asked. “I’ll be a floater,” she said.
“I’ll stay with you, then with my brothers in Maine, and then with some of my friends. I’ll just float around
and enjoy myself.” She laughed as though she’d just discovered the perfect lifestyle. “I’ll take my cat everywhere
with me. I can’t bear to leave him behind or give him away. What do you think?”
“No one will want you to show up with your cat.” My answer seemed a shock to her. After only seconds, she
added, “Well, I just won’t tell them he’s coming. We’ll just show up. What can they do?”
Shocked, I took a deep breath and forced myself to respond by explaining all the reasons why selling, moving
in with me, and fearlessly dragging the cat across the country in secret were terrible ideas.
Unbothered, she simply said, “You’re so dramatic. It’ll be fine.”
I didn’t take her announcement seriously. A few days after her announcement,my brother and I enjoyed a few
laughs over her idea. After all, our mother was too independent to be placed in a place long-term with any of herchildren. She had made this clear on many occasions when I’d begged to live next door to her. I’d wanted to be
close enough to watch over her but not too close, but she’d always refused.
I enjoyed living alone, hearing the quiet, writing and reading. I hated noise. My mother loved radio, television,
and phone calls, endless phone calls. We would not make good housemates.

【答案】
I really panicked when she started having yard sales. “Are you serious?” I asked her one day. “Of course,” she
answered. I forced myself to face what was happening, and I begged for some cherished items. Then one day Mom
caught a bad cold and had a high fever. I was afraid and sent her to the hospital. During those days, I was no longer
stressed about her floater plan, whether it was right or logical. I just wanted her to be okay. Luckily, she recovered.
I took her to my home from the hospital happily, no longer bothered by her moving in. I am not saying we
would get along perfectly, but I see things differently. Her moving in with me hadn’t been part of the plan — living
next to her had been. I’ve realized I don’t have to understand her, just love her while she’s here and take every
moment I have with her as a gift. Whenever I had time, I would take her to travel, to realize her dream.

“SAI BABA! Sai Baba! Sai Baba! Hahahaha!”
“Today is Shimla’s big day! We have a celebrity visiting our city! Hahahaha!” Rani’s cheekcs burned with
embarrassment and tears stung her eyes as she elbowed her way to the exit through the crowd of teasing boys in the
packed school bus. It wasn’t the first time she’d been called Sai Baba, after the famous Hindu holy man (印度圣人)
she’d seen on TV with his trademark afro (爆炸式卷发) towering over his head.
But this time had to be the worst. Rani jumped off the school bus, angry thoughts hovering inside Rani’s head
as she marched home in the drizzling rain. Why did her hair have to curl like a giant cotton candy balloon just when
she wanted it to behave? Why, why. why, fumed Rani as she turned the back door key.
“Rani, is that you?” Mama called from the family room. Suddenly Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came
charging toward her. “How many eggs does Rani have in that nest on her head?” screamed Amit. “Let me get that
wig (假发) off Rani’s head!” shouted Sumit. Before she could think, Rani had fled out the door and went back up
the road she’d walked down minutes before. Halfway up, she slid unseen behind a green curtain of bamboo.
Tearing through the wild growth, she made her way down a narrow mud path into a clearing (空地). She threw her
schoolbag on the ground and breathed hard.
“I hate my hair!” she cried. Collapsing on her schoolbag, she bitterly remembered the time she’d spent trying
to smooth her hair in vain. Before long, she fell into a fitful sleep.
“RANI! RAA-AANI!”
Rani woke up to Mama’s calls. She sounded anxious. “I’ll never go home,” she promised herself darkly.
Mama let Amit and Sumit make fun of me. Papa would never have done that. He would listen to me and stand by
my side. The minutes wore on. Alone in her secret hideout, Rani watched the shadow of Mamna get longer and
begin to disappear as dusk fell.

【答案】
Suddenly, leaves rustling, someone or something was making its way into the clearing. Rani froze. She
knew about the dangerous animals—the foxes and snakes and even man-eater leopards—that lurked in the lush
jungles. A shiver went down her spine. Hugging herself close, she crouched lower, not daring to move a muscle.
Tiny night bugs bit into her soft flesh and hunger pangs wracked her belly. Rani was tortured by such a disastrous
day! She held her breath as the rustling grew louder, her eyes scanning the bushes frantically. Suddenly, the thick
leaves parted, and a dark form stepped into the clearing. Rani’s heart leaping with fear, she opened her mouth to
scream.
The next moment Papa was sitting beside her. Relief and joy flooded through Rani. She flung her arms
around Papa and clung to him. “Rani! What’s wrong?” a visibly relieved Papa asked. Rani hesitated at first, but
then broke down in tears, “I hate my hair!” She poured out everything about teasing. “And that’s not all,” Rani
sobbed. “Mama even let Amit and Sumit get away with it.” Papa sighed, stroked her disheveled hair and planted a
soft kiss on her forehead. “I know it’s tough being teased by those kids, but you can’t let it get to you. Look, you
are beautiful just the way you are!” Papa said soothingly. Together, they sat in silence for a while, until Rani’s tears
dried up and she felt ready to face the world again.
