When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and balls. We had
never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town
we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the
school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the
two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to
each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty
good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the
upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the
block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do? Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man
down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad?”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads
drooping.

【答案】
“What happened?” asked my mother, seeing us in low spirits. “Well,” my brother slowly began, “we hit the
tennis ball too hard and too high and it went right through the school window”. “Oh, my goodness!” my mother
exclaimed. After a short pause, her voice softened when she asked us if we had reported this to the school. Lips
bitten, we shook our heads. “It will cost all of our pocket money”, I muttered. “But there is always something more
important than money”, she said soothingly, patting me on the shoulder. Slowly lifting my head, I encountered my
mother’s encouraging eyes and a decision was made.
The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office. Nervous and frightened, we inched
into the office. There sat our stern-looking headmaster. “We have something to confess...”, we spilled our story with
a hint of fear in our voices. He looked very somber and we were sure that the news was bad. Then he smiled, “I am
proud of you kids for having the courage to tell me what happened”. He could see our relief as he continued,
“Many windows had been broken, but you were the first ones to admit that you were responsible. For that, you
don’t have to pay for the broken window, because honesty comes before anything else”.

The Magic Bus
I was travelling on an overnight bus from Kolhapur to Aurangabad in Maharashtra. This was way back in May
1972, when I was still in college. The bus — an ordinary, non-air-conditioned one — was more than packed; all 55
seats were occupied and there were some 20 people standing in the aisle (过道). The hot day added to the
discomfort of the rough, 10-hour journey. Because I was travelling on a student bus pass, I could not claim a
reserved seat. I had no option but to stand — quite uncomfortably.
The bus started its journey a little later than scheduled. The passengers seated comfortably by the windows
wore happy expressions as they looked at the outside world, the breeze kissing their faces. The people seated by the
aisle complained about the standing ones, who had no option but to occasionally lean on the seat corners. The air
inside was hot and filled with strange, unpleasant smells. Some enthusiastic travellers had carried small transistor
radios with the slim hope that they would be able to listen to some music on the way.
After around two very long hours, I was beyond exhausted and bored. I kept trying to balance myself, shifting
my body weight from one leg to the other to manage the discomfort. After another long hour, I was wet with sweat
in the noise and shaky rhythm of the bus. I suddenly sensed a soft hand tapping my elbow (手肘), asking for
attention. Turning around, I found a middle-aged man with a kind smile looking up at me. He suddenly stood up
and said I could take his seat for some time. I was pleasantly surprised and immediately accepted his offer, my
entire body heaving a sigh of relief. The man, whose seat I was in, stood next to me, looking around in amusement.
After about 20 minutes, I signalled him to take back his space. A man, who was sitting by the window on the other
side of the bus, had observed our exchange.

【答案】
Just then, something magical happened. Our observer spontaneously stood up and offered his seat to another
standing man, who had been leaning on the seat corner for quite some time. All of a sudden, we had triggered a
chain reaction: This game of seat-sharing spread through the bus like wildfire and, before long, almost all the
standees got a chance to be seated. More surprisingly, people even started chatting with each other while
exchanging positions, and soon began sharing jokes and humming to the lovely melody played by the radio.
Needless to say, the rest of the journey was quite enjoyable.
The bus reached its destination in the early hours of the morning. A burst of first sunshine sent a beam of
amber light through the window, lighting up people’s heart. The cool breeze of early morning blew away the fatigue
and weariness, refreshing the minds and bodies. Immersed in this relaxing and friendly atmosphere, the groups bid
farewell warmly, got off the bus and went their way. As I stood there soaking in the early morning light, I was
reminded of an important life lesson — that we can all share what we have, including our burdens, and help our co-
passengers in this journey called life.

Broken Shells
It was a warm summer afternoon at the Jersey shore. My four-year-old son and I just loved walking along the
beach just before dinner. With a bucket in hand, we’d hit the sand and start our adventure.
I remember the days not so long ago when a trip to the beach was just unbearable for my little boy. My son,
Will, was diagnosed with ASD (孤独症). His sensitivities to sights, sounds, and touches would prevent us from
enjoying everyday activities. The beach is now one of his favorite places to visit.
Presently, we are able to walk along the edge of the water almost daily in the summer months, looking for
seashells to fill our bucket. On this particular day, there didn’t seem to be too many shells washed up on the shore.
Will began picking up whatever shells he saw lying in the sand. After a while, I looked into the bucket and saw
nothing but broken shells. “Will,” I said, “all of these shells are broken and no good.” “You need to find shells like
this,” I continued, as I held up a perfectly shaped shell. Will gave me a puzzled look and continued on his way,
gathering whatever shells he saw and dropping them into the bucket.
I continued my search for some time, and again, I stopped, but this time I asked in a firm voice, “Will, why do
you insist on filling our bucket with shells that are broken?” He looked up at me and replied, “Mom, there are more
shells on the beach that are broken than there are perfect ones that you are searching for. We’ll get the bucket filled
faster with the broken ones.” True, I thought, but who wanted a bucketful of broken shells? Will stared at me as if
he knew what I was thinking. “Mom, these shells are broken. but they are still beautiful.” he added. Just then he
began commenting on different shells’ uniqueness. “It has the color purple on it. Mom, none of yours have purple
on them. It reminds me of a clown (小丑). This one is like the sun, and these ones are like butterfly wings,” he said
with such pride.

【答案】
Touched by what he said, I realized changes are to be made to our shell trip. My eyes filling with tears, I
reached my hand into the bucket and began to take out the few perfect shells I had collected and placed them back
on the beach. Will and I walked along the beach, collecting only broken shells in our bucket and admiring their
beauty. His eyes sparked with joy, which I had never seen. Before we knew it, the bucket was half full. Meanwhile,
the tide began to rise and we had to leave the lovely beach.
Back home with great joy, we agreed to make more shell trips and build a “broken shell garden”. It is a
constant reminder of how none of us are perfect. We are all broken in some way, but we still possess beauty and
uniqueness beyond belief. Now, whenever we go to the beach, we gather only broken shells. Yes, it’s true, while the
perfect shells are few and far between, there are many more broken shells left lying on the beach that go unnoticed.
If we take the time to look more closely at the broken shells, we can find beauty in their imperfections, and maybe
even learn something about ourselves.

From the moment my husband brought home a box of six chicks from Tractor Supply Company, our nine-
year-old, Sophie, didn’t let them out of her sight. She named them Trixie, Beauty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain
Flint, and Adrian (we were reading Treasure Island and watching Rocky at the time).
Sophie made a promise that she would take good care of them and took at least one chicken everywhere we let
her. We were content with this; after all, it was a good way to make her dutiful and responsible. So when we
wouldn’t let them sleep in her bed, she was very upset. She, actually, argued about this issue again and again,
claiming that it is Duty NO.1 to company her baby chickens to sleep. Later, we made a compromise that we’ve
allowed one inside at a time if Sophie immediately cleans up after the visit.
On a special festival, she dressed as a chicken and convinced us it was the turn of Trixie and Sweet to come
with her to get candies from the neighbors — that’s Duty NO.2 to company her baby to have fun. The reactions
from neighbors were quite amusing. “Wait, are these real chickens you’re holding?” “Of course! They’re my
babies, and I am the mother.” Sophie answered excitedly. Trixie and Sweet cooed (咕咕叫) the whole time,
seeming to make response.
One hot day, I buried myself in piles of work when Sophie rushed into the room, asking “Mommy, can I take
Captain Flint to the pond?” To be frank, I didn’t quite catch what she said but still nodded, even without taking my
eyes off the screen. She jumped to cheer. “Captain Flint, let’s head for the pond now!” “Coo, coo.” Then they
rushed out of the room.
Several minutes later, I suddenly realized that Sophie just went to the pond with a chicken! Could Sophie
swim? No!!! Could chickens swim? No!!! Could anything unexpected happen?

In case of emergency, I took a river tube (救生圈) and hurried to the pond. I sighed with relief when I saw my
little girl sitting crouched by the lake with Captain Flint pacing around her. “What are you doing?” Hearing my
voice, Sophie turned her head, rose immediately and danced toward me. “Mommy, look there! I’m making a ship
for my Captain Flint.” Several small branches were carefully arranged, and some unknown thin long leaves tied
them together. “Mum, but it still doesn’t look like a real ship”, Sophie murmured frustratedly. “What about this?” I
raised the river tube, adding, “We can make it the body of the ship and the branches the board of it.” “Brilliant!
Let’s start!” Her eyes relit with joy and we worked together to make a perfect ship.
Captain Flint’s ship would start its first sail. We put Captain Flint gently on the board, and use a long branch
stuck to the ship to control the ship’s direction. It seemed quite excited about its first sail, flapping its wings and
cooing melodiously. “Go, Captain Flint!” Sophie cheered, directing the ship have a short but encouraging sail.
“Mommy, you know, it’s Duty NO. 3 to company her baby to finish their first adventure.” She look at me with a
dazzling smile. I knew she enjoyed the process of “being a mother”, and moreover she understood and shouldered
what is called responsibility. I gave her a bear hug, whispering, “You are my pride, honey.”

Early in my teaching career, I heard countless excuses for why students didn’t hand in their homework. As
time passed, I quit accepting any excuse other than a verifiable(能证实的)death in the family.
When I was transferred to an inner-city middle school, I took my no-nonsense attitude with me.”No excuses,
no extensions!“ I warned my eighth graders on the first day of school. I collected homework at the beginning of
each class. When a student didn’t have it, I never asked why. Instead, I sighed loudly, shook my head and—with the
student looking on—recorded a zero in the grade book. I soon gained the reputation I thought I wanted.
Then, one afternoon, shortly after the dismissal bell rang, Anthony approached me.”Could I talk to you a
minute?“ he asked shyly, not taking his eyes off the floor.”I know you said it doesn’t matter why we don’t have our
lessons done, but I don’t want you to think I’m a lazy student because I come to school without my homework so
often.“
Anthony looked up at me for the first time, and I could see that his eyes were watering.”It’s just that my dad
moved out, and my mom waits tables at night, so I have to take care of my little brothers. Sometimes they cry a lot,
and it makes it hard to concentrate.“
I put my hand on Anthony’s thin shoulder.”Why are you just now telling me …”I stopped in mid-sentence. I
knew why. So I changed the question.“Would it help if you stayed here in my classroom after school and worked on
it before you go home?”
He swallowed hard and nodded.
The next day, I announced to all my students that I’d be offering an after-school study hall Monday through
Friday.

【答案】
Anthony was the first student to show up. A couple of days later, another student joined him. Before long, Ihad a room full of eighth graders who sometimes stayed until five o'clock to work on their lessons. I seldom asked
them what made it impossible for them to finish their homework in time. Instead, I listened to their stories and
problems, and managed to make up for the lessons they had missed. Meanwhile, some students offered to help each
other. Seeing happy smiles on their faces, I knew their confidence were building up.
I learned a lot from the case of Anthony. I used to take a no-nonsense attitude towards excuses. Now I have
come to realize that not all kids come from homes that are safe and warm. Some have to study in a difficult
situation. These things couldn’t be taught in the education classes I had taken in college. The teaching relationship
involves trust. As teachers, we should learn to lend an ear and listen to them. Most importantly, I learned that “I’ll
listen” works far better than “No excuses! ”

The Overturned Bin
“Char siu bao,” I pushed my cart (推车) around table after table of hungry customers. It was Saturday morning
— the height of the brunch rush — and everyone in the neighborhood knew that Grandma Wu’s restaurant offered
the freshest dim sum. Grandma’s Chinese dishes were so irresistible that customers were numerous. After a while, my cart was empty and I took some of my favorite char siu bao at the tiny table in the alley (巷
子) behind the restaurant. But just as I was about to take my first bite, I noticed something strange. Our garbage
bins had been knocked over! Trash and half-eaten dim sum littered the ground.
Swallowing my bao, I quickly picked up the mess. Then I headed back inside to help with the rest of the
rubbish. I forgot all about the mystery of the knocked-over bins until I took out the trash only to find the garbage
bins had tipped over again!
Could it have been the wind? As I cleaned up for a second time, I looked at the darkening sky. A storm was
heading our way, but the tree branches were not moving. Determined to avoid cleaning up a third time, I placed
three stones on top of the bins.
I was met with another surprise early next morning. Looking out of my window for signs of the storm, I
spotted the garbage bins — knocked over again! I complained as it started to rain. That’s when I noticed two yellow
eyes staring back at me — it was a little gray cat!
“So you’re the one that keeps leaving messes!” I rushed to the alley, finally understanding. I watched as the cat
tried to get the half-eaten bao inside. Cats aren’t supposed to eat bao. Garlic could be deadly to cats. But the cat was
clearly too hungry to care.

I took a cautious step toward him when there was suddenly a loud thunder above us. The storm began. The
frightened cat dived back into the garbage bin. With the rain picking up, the poor kitty was too scared to come out
of his new hiding spot. Luckily, I had an idea. Having grabbed a can of cat food, I went to the kitchen where
Grandma was preparing for the day’s opening. “May I take that?” I asked, pointing to a plate full of fresh char siu
bao. “Help yourself,” Grandma said, and I beaded back outside with it.Like all of Grandma’s customers, the cat cheered up at the scent (气) of the warm char siu bao. I slowly
made my way to the garage. Sure enough, the cat followed me inside, happy to be out of the rain. “You can’t eat
these bao, but I have something better for you,” I said, pouring some cat food into a bowl. It wasn’t long before
Grandma appeared in the doorway. “Grandma, meet my new friend. He loves the smell of your cooking,” I said.
Grandma chuckled, “Well, it looks like I’ll need to expand our menu to include some cat-friendly dim sum
options.”

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every
day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I
didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing
Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you
have fun today, Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I
was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We
rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the
Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one
to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I
found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity
have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports.
My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I
had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell
me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.

【答案】One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school. I
listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked what good things
happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something good must have happened. Think
it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by
his head teacher for helping cleaning the front desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really
happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just consider
everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he kept patient and
peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I witnessed his attitude changing
from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a struggle, but he was making headway. My
hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get used to seeing the cup of life as half full.

I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach.
“Mama, want to play?” “Not today, baby.” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still
recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard.Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew
away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate
carrying sticks. “Look Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and
out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by
the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much
as I was sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin
leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs
(细枝) break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But
they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from
the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again,
as if nothing had happened.

I knew I had to do something. The white dove and its mate had provided brightness during my dark days.
Now it was time to help them in return. I cut a piece of hardware cloth, forming it into the shape of a nest and then
securing the ends. I then hammered it into the wall next to the rubber tree. After I had finished all the work, there
was only an hour before the doves usually made their visit. Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting
and hoping.“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. Hearing my son’s excited voice, which was as clear
as a bell, I looked up. There they were-swooping and circling near the nest, trying to add some twigs to their new
home. A few weeks later, three babies broke free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp,” Matthew sang. I held him in my
arms and kissed him, enjoying the happiness of the moment. Looking at their flittering shadows and hearing them
chirp, I felt the dim grayness within my heart disappeared, replaced by the strength of life.

Broken seashells
It was the summer in mid-July at the Jersey shore. My four-year-old son Will and I just loved heading off to
the beach just before dinner when the rest of the vacationers seemed to be leaving for the day. The sun was still hot
then and shining brightly.
Bucket in hand, we’d hit the sand and start our adventure. Will would run so quickly to the edge of the water
and be soaked before I got there, laughing as the waves crashed and nearly knocked him down. We usually walked
along the edge of the water, looking for seashells to fill our red sandcastle-shaped bucket. Some days, the bucket
was full, and other days just a few shells made it into the bucket.
On this particular day, there didn’t seem to be too many shells washed up on the shore. Will began picking upwhatever shells he saw lying in the sand. After a while, I peered into the bucket and saw nothing but broken shells.
“Will, all of these shells are broken and no good. You need to find shells like this,” I explained, as I held up a
perfectly shaped clamshell. Will gave me a puzzled look and continued on his way, gathering whatever shells he
came across and dropping them into the bucket.
I continued my search for some time, and then stopped to watch him drop more broken shells into the bucket.
Again, I stopped, but this time I asked in a stricter voice, “Will, why do you insist on filling our bucket with shells
that are broken?” He looked up at me through his glasses with his big blue eyes and replied, “Mom, there are way
more shells on the beach that are broken than perfect ones that you are searching for. We’ll get the bucket filled
faster with the broken ones.” True, I thought, but who wants a bucketful of broken shells? Will stared at me as if he
knew what I was thinking. “Mom, these shells are broken, but they are still beautiful,” he explained.

【答案】
He began pulling the shells from the bucket and commenting on their uniqueness. “Look! This one looks like a
heart when you hold it this way!” he exclaimed, showing me a shell with an uneven shape. One after another, he
introduced to me each broken seashell he had collected, his face lighting up with wonder and appreciation. “Each
one of them is indeed one of a kind, darling.” I watched as he arranged the shells in the sand, admiring their
extraordinary beauty. It dawned on me that he saw perfection where I saw imperfection.
Back home, I decided to preserve the moment of realization with Will. We washed the sand off each shell
carefully with toothbrushes, and then displayed them carefully in the yard. Looking at the “broken shell garden”,
Will smiled with great satisfaction. It is a constant reminder that we are all broken in some way, but we still possess
beauty and uniqueness beyond belief. As for me, that day on the beach was not just about collecting shells; it was
also about my four-year-old teaching me an invaluable lesson that beauty comes in many forms.

Our church congregation (集会) in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without
making the receiver feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the receiver
on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. Both of us lost jobs at that time and
there was little hope that we could be employed within a short time. Of course, out of self-esteem, we did hot talk
about our financial difficulty with anyone else. The only reason our children knew was that we had to cut back on
many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much then father and I were
suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
With time going by, our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look
for outside help. In that cold winter, just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that
had been left in the offering box. You couldn’t imagine how overjoyed we were on receiving such a very substantial
amount of money, which was enough to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had
given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and enormously grateful. In this way, we could survive
daring this tough period with the money. Besides, we needn’t worry about our son’s university tuition, that is, he
needn’t apply for any loan (贷款) because he had taken a part-time job and worked hard to earn some money since
he was nine years old. He had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, a car washer, a dishwasher and so on. He
had been careful for his small earnings so we had trusted him to leave all his wages with him instead of putting itinto the bank towards his education.

【答案】
A year later, our son was applying for a student loan. It was then that we discovered that his savings account
was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. What worried me was that he might abuse the
money. Therefore, I asked him repeatedly to tell me where the money had gone. At first he would not tell me, which
made me even angrier. Nevertheless, I would not let the matter alone. I was continuously questioning him,
determined to find out where the money had gone, but in vain.
Finally, in tears, my son told me he had put his savings in the offering box for us. On hearing this, I stood there
speechless, tears filling my eyes. It had taken my son years to save that money and he had given it to us willingly -
without telling us what he had done. However, I did wrong to him, a kind and caring boy, who carried my husband
and me through when we were in trouble. I couldn’t help hugging my son tightly. A warm current welled up in my
heart, although it was freezing cold outside.

One day, little Philip spent the morning with his young playmate, Johnny Crane, who lived in a fine house.
When Philip returned home, he told Mother Johnny had money in both pockets and he said he could get ever so
much more if he wanted it. Mother nodded calmly.
“Why, he has a big popgun, and a watch, and a hobbyhorse, and lots of things.” Philip looked up with an
unhappy stare…and the tears sprang to his eyes, “I guess we are very poor, aren’t we?”
“No, indeed, Philip, we are far from being poor. We are just not so rich as Mr. Crane’s family, if that is what
you mean.”
“No!” insisted the little fellow, sobbing, “I do think we are very poor! I have scarcely anything –– I mean
anything that’s worth money, except things to eat and wear, and I’d have to have them anyway.”
“Have to have them?” Mother echoed, wondering how to reason with him on that point, “Grow up, my son.
We have enough to live...”
Just then Uncle Ben looked up from the paper he had been reading: “Philip,” said he, I’m doing experiments
about eyes; so, if you will let me have yours, I will give you a dollar apiece for them. I will give you chloroform
(三氯甲烷), so it will not hurt you in the least, and you shall have a beautiful glass pair for nothing, to wear in their
place. Come, a dollar apiece, cash down! What do you say?”
“Give you my eyes, uncle?” cried Philip, looking wild at the very thought and shaking his head, “No!”
“Well, five, ten.” “Twenty dollars, then.”
Philip shook his head at every offer. “No! I wouldn’t let you have them for a thousand dollars! What could I do
without my eyes? I couldn’t see mother, nor the baby, nor the flowers, nor the horses, nor anything,” added Philip,
growing angry.

【答案】
Philip, however, shouted that he would never do any such thing. Uncle Ben said he couldn’t afford more thantwo thousand dollars for his eyes. Then he offered twenty dollars to put a few drops from a bottle in Philip’s ears,
which would not hurt him but would make him deaf. “I want to try some experiments with deafness.” he said.
“Why, I couldn’t hear a single word if I were deaf!” Philip shouted, “Not for three thousand dollars!” Uncle Ben
then came out with large bids for “a right arm,” “hands,” “feet,” finally ten thousand dollars for “mother,” and
twenty thousand for “the baby.”
To all of these offers for his body parts Philip shook his head, refusing to exchange any. At last, Uncle Ben
said: “These numbers amount to a large amount of money. Aren’t you foolish not to accept some of my offers?”
Philip answered no firmly. “Then,” said Uncle Ben, “you talk of being poor, but you have treasures for which you
will not take so much money. Why is that?” Philip didn’t know exactly what to say. He blushed, and then tears
came rolling down his cheeks, and he threw his arms around Mother’s neck. “Mother,” he whispered, “isn’t it
obvious that I’m so rich, but I’m so blind?”

The economic downturn caught us. We sold our ranch and moved to town, Mother had decided to open a day
nursery. She had had no training, but that didn’t stand in her way. She sent away for correspondence courses in
child care, did the lessons and in six months formally qualified herself for the task. It wasn’t long before she had afull enrollment and a waiting list. I accepted all this as a perfectly normal instance of Mother’s ability. But neither
the nursery nor the motel my parents bought later had provided enough income to send my sister and me to college.
In two years I would be ready for college. Time was running out, and Mother was anxious for ways to save money.
It was clear that Dad could do no more than he was doing already — farming 80 acres in addition to holding a
fulltime job. A few months after we’d sold the motel, Mother arrived home with a used green typewriter.
“That’s all we can afford,” Mother said. “It’s good enough to learn on.” And from that day on, as soon as the
table was cleared and the dishes were done, Mother would disappear into her sewing room to practice. The slow
tap, tap, tap went on some nights until midnight. Soon I heard Mother got a job at the radio station. I was not the
least bit surprised, or impressed. But she was wild with joy.
Monday, after her first day at work, I could see that the excitement was gone.
Tuesday, Dad made dinner and cleaned the kitchen. Mother stayed in her sewing room, practicing. “Is Mother
all right?” I asked Dad. “She’s having a little trouble with her typing,” he said. “She needs to practice. I think she’d
appreciate it if we all helped out a bit more. You might just remember that she is working primarily so you can go
to college.”

【答案】
Wednesday, I arrived home earlier and was surprised by what I saw — Mother was crying in the corner of
the couch. I approached cautiously and touched her shoulder. “Mother?” I said. “What’s happened?” She took a
long breath and managed a weak smile. “I’m going to lose this new job. I can’t type fast enough. I guess we all
have to fail sometime,” Mother said quietly. I could sense her pain and the tension of holding back the strong
emotions that were interrupted by my arrival. Suddenly, something inside me turned. I reached out and put my arms
around her. She broke then. Sitting beside her on the couch, I began very slowly to understand the pressures on her.
Mother took another job earning half, but the evening practice sessions on the old green typewriter continued.I had a very different feeling now when I passed her door at night and heard her tapping away. I knew there was
something more going on in there than a woman learning to type. And I knew there was something strong growing
in my heart. In time we harvested the fruits of labor. I went to college. Years after, I proudly accepted a job as a
newspaper reporter, and Mother had already been a journalist with our hometown paper. Now the old green
typewriter sits in my office, unrepaired. It is a reminder — not of failure, but of my mother’s courage, the courage
to go ahead.

My parents moved to Vermont when I was still a baby. A soft-spoken man, my father settled quietly into his
medical practice. Soon the local people accepted him as one of their own. Around town the neighbors greeted myfather as “Doc Eppley”. And I would always be known as “Doctor Eppley’s son”. “If you’re anything like your
father, you’ll be a smart boy,” my first-grade teacher said. I couldn’t stop beaming.
Initially, I was never tired of letting others know that my father was one of the town’s most respected people.
Somewhere in my teenage years, however, something changed. I was sixteen years old and I grew impatient
whenever I heard my neighbors still calling me “Doctor Eppley’s son”. My father’s name now seemed like an ugly
shadow that followed me wherever I went. And so when strangers asked me if I was Doctor Eppley’s son, I would
reply loudly, “My name is Harold.” As an act of rebellion (叛逆), I began to call my father by his first name, Sam.
“Why are you acting so rude lately?” my father questioned me one day. “Well, Sam,” I replied, “I suppose that
bothers you. “You know it hurts me when you call me Sam,” my father shouted.” Well, it hurts me when everybody
expects me to be just like you. I want to be myself. Let me take it out for a drive, “I said, pointing to my father’s
new car. My father agreed, but not without his usual warning,” Be careful. Keys are in the kitchen. “I glared at
him,” Sam, I’m sick of being treated like a child. I’m in college now. “I jumped into the car and headed down the
road, enjoying the beauty of the countryside. My mind was wandering when I hit the car right in front of mine
before I knew it. The woman in the car jumped out screaming: “You idiot! What were you looking at?” I surveyed
the damage. Both cars had suffered serious dents (凹痕).

I sat there like a guilty child feeling nervous as the woman continued swearing. “Are you blind? It’s entirely
your fault!” she snapped at me. The impact of the crash left my knees shaking and I struggled to stand up. Feeling
hopeless, I blinked hard to choke back my tears as she demanded repeatedly: “Who are you?” “I’m... I’m Doctor

sorry,” her voice softened and gave up keeping swearing. “I didn’t realize who you were.” After apologizing to her,
I dragged myself back to the car, carrying the weight of my actions.
An hour later, I drove my father’s broken new car back home. With my head down, I braced myself for thescolding I knew I deserved because I was sure my father will be disappointed. However, I was greeted with
unexpected compassion from my father, “Are you hurt, Harold?” he asked, his voice filled with concern. “No, I’m
Okay...” I replied. “But the car...I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t mean to.” “Don’t be sorry, son. Be better.” Father said.

As Hurricane Lan bore down on Florida, many residents who stayed put found themselves unable to leave
even if they tried. For hours they were forced to fight heavy winds and attempt to escape flooding inside long-loved
homes that had become frightening, deadly traps. Within days, around 100 deaths in the state would be attributed to
the hurricane, many of them were older residents who drowned.
When the water slipped in under the door of their home, it was just a glimmer on the floor, a sign that it was
time to go. It was Wednesday, Sept.28, around noon, and Bishop woke up her two brothers, who had been resting
after lunch. She pulled the wheelchair up to the oldest, Russell, 67. Her other brother, Todd, 63, could manage with
a walker.
Both men had been born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫), and their mental development was like that of a young
child. About 10 years ago, they started showing signs of Parkinson’s disease. But they found joy in theirsurroundings. Todd liked collecting cans at the beach. Russell loved riding the bus and going to parks. Bishop, 61,
was their lifeline, their little sister who had long felt an obligation to keep them safe.
“We’ve got to get going!” she shouted to them. She went to open the front door. It would not move. The
weight of the water on the other side had made it shut. She rushed to try the door to the garage. It, too, was stuck.
That’s when the house began to flood. It went from ankle-deep to knee-deep in less than five minutes. Bishop knew
that there was no way out.
Now Bishop and her brothers were trapped. At 12:34 p.m., she called 911 but couldn’t get through. There was
no one she could get in touch with. To try her fortune, she texted a neighbor, Walters, who was always there when
neighbors were in need, “Water’s coming in.” Around her, she could hear the dining room hutch (餐具柜) tipping
and crashing, the china breaking, the refrigerator toppling over.

The only way to go was up, so Bishop guided her two bothers to the stairs. First she helped Todd pull himself
slowly up to the second floor, where he waited in a chair. But stairs were impossible for Russell, who could not
walk nor bend his stiff legs. Bishop tried hard to pull him up the stairs, but Russell was too heavy for her. She tried
every possible position, switching from pushing to pulling, but Russel was yelling “I can’t, I can’t” all the time and
he was slipping and sliding.
Bishop sank into despair, but she noticed it seemed water stopped coming in. Looking outside, everywhere she
saw it was water, and she could even see cars floating by. “Thank God, the wind and the rain stopped.” At around
6:30 p.m, Bishop heard a familiar voice calling outside, “Hello?! Hello?! Anyone in?” It was Walters. Standing in
waist-deep water, Walters instructed two of his friends to paddle the canoes near. Bishop held her brothers tightly in
her arms, crying “Thank God, Walters is coming to save us!”

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without
thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing
was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the
Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your
stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed
to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at
night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would comestraight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I
worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen
books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.”
I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the
enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said

recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my
hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before,

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and
walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my
attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-
webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was
the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the
sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been
struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I
stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature
looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As Iwas departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center
of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly
into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said,
“She must have come to say goodbye.”

【答案】
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when
I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that
the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was
getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to
survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I
turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its
beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at
the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I
climbed into my car and drove away.

I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours
required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did,
too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing
everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to
separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building
many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began
serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How
should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the
people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I
was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d
be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore
clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be
making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good
meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to
call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

what I could do for them. They nodded gratefully as I pushed my spoon into the pot and took a large spoonful and
poured it into their bowls.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. This experience made me realize that there are
so many people in this world who need our help. It also made me realize that our small act of kindness can make
them feel warm and make a great difference to them. I will never forget the way they looked at me when they were
given food. I am anxious to urge the world to do everything possible to help those in need.

短文。
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the
small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was
small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t
with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids
from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let
him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After
making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking
from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his
classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were
doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team.
It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run
long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with
the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

______
【答案】
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change
your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat
still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you
show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling
out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard
what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the
runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on
running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t
take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track,
cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s
joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It
was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he
would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he
wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes
and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately
matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he
treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't mean
or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it
and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis,
do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both
students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had
a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted
to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening
out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I
wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

【答案】
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Though I wanted to share my ideas with him fully, I failed
to do so for fear that I would hold him back. I just kept nodding when he asked me whether it is ok to do this wayor that way. I thought it was impossible to persuade him into accepting my views, so I didn’t want to waste our time
to discuss. I started to wait to leave immediately we arrived at the place, and so did he. I just hoped that the
presentation day could come earlier.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I felt so sorry to hear that and I
thought I should visit him in any case. He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some
flowers and fruits. I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it.
We began to work as a fine team and finally finished our project on time. Our hard work paid off and Dr.
Henderson’s was very satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project, we also learned the significance of
teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go far, but a group of persons can travel farther.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day.
How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French
toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff
knew exactly what to do.The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They
decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the
French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into
the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going
smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna
threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it
cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge
boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the
stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But
Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she
caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again.
They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to
success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and
perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her
that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The
children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事,
My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school
activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family
expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超
过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football,
preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my
trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in
his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds
to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we
began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs,
lamb’s-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward
to the pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.”
My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I
decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

【答案】
The pay arrived at last. Although the job was very tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something
from my work. The toil of labor was forgotten for the time being. I thought I should have my own money and
planned how to spend it. “How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to tell him
my income. The next morning, my dad’s livestock truck started running. I saw my father’s hard-working figure and
thought of his words “A job’s a big step to growing up”.
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. They were worried that I was too selfish to
give. I realized that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the hard
work of my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He even seemed to think that was fair. I thought,
“I’ve only worked for two weeks, but how many years my father has worked!” In the evening, Dad came back. I
proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had
lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other
meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She
knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine
to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed,
his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was
Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his
mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn
money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I
have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell
you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make
popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

____________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local
supermarket together. They bought a bag of corn and some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they
made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told
Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very
happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and
sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs.
Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and
salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of
Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp
outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals should be
photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a
telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled
our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and
bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and firedblank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though-
he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes
before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager
suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited
guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to
wash his eyes.

【答案】
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp, then we realized the spray had only angered him even
more, for he seemed much fiercer this time and violently pushed the fence like mad. My heart raced wildly, not
knowing what to do. At this critical moment, Elli grabbed several pieces of garlic bread and threw them over the
fence. It worked! The bear stopped the attack and ran to the bread. But it wasn’t long before he eat up all the
bread and came back again.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. “Thank goodness we are saved!” Elli cried out. Once the
helicopter landed, we got onto it in no time, excited and relieved. When we were safe on the helicopter up in the
air, I was amazed to the spot that the bear had finally tore down the fence and ran towards the food we left behind.
I quickly took out the camera and photographed the rare scene- we were robbed by a polar bear.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy, "said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend
goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions(情绪)get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of
town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least.
The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile.” I guess this is it, “he said.” I'll see
you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the
crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back
home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in
her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be
back to visit. Poppy didn't.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl
just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy
up?"asked Dad. “We've tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, “smiled Mom.” Without anybody left in the house but us, this
place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy."
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home
as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging(摆动)ever so
slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

【答案】
Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog Then two fluffy paws. Next the box tipped over sideways, and
out tumbled a mass of wiggly golden silliness. Poppy was amazed. She wagged furiously. She barked with joy.
She smiled, her tongue lolling out as she investigated the surprise. The little pup was not shy and immediately
starting yipping and jumping around the older dog. “That didn’t take long,” remarked Mom, as both dogs went
roaring around the house in an impromptu game of chase. Dad laughed.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had missed Poppy and was looking forward to
seeing her. When he bent down to give her a big hug, he fell over in surprise as a small golden cloud came racing
up to lick his face too. “Oh my gosh, who is this?” he exclaimed. His parents laughed at the look of shock on his
face. “That’s Pee-wee,” said Dad. “I can’t believe you got yourselves a puppy!” “We didn’t,” replied Mom. “This
puppy is for Poppy!”
