I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider- webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up. With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me. When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty? As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away. Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight. During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.” A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ 【经典范文】 A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive? I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away. It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线) through thick evergreen forest. I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run. What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event! I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward. David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination. Paragraph 1: We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. Paragraph 2: I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. Patting him on the back softly, I quietly said, “David, if you don’t want to run today, no one is going to make you. But if you are not running because you are afraid someone is going to laugh at you, that is not a good enough reason. You know, you can’t stop others from laughing at you, but you can decide what you want to do.” I held my breath as David took this in. Then he looked at the field and said with fierce but quiet determination, “I’m gonna run.” I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. At the sound of the signal gunshot, the runners shot out like bullets, except David. He dragged his legs with great efforts, step by step. Though left far behind, he kept striving towards his set goal at a firm pace. With everyone’s encouragement, he finally crossed the finishing line, achieving his best record ever. People were deeply moved by his perseverance and it was the dearest thing in sportsmanship. With the power to conquer himself, he can conquer anything on the way to a promising future. 考向3 考查超越自我 (2023·新高考全国I卷)When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care. A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ 【经典范文】 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!” I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.考向4 考查家庭生活、亲情故事 (2021·新高考全国I卷) A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do. The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely. Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well. As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ 【经典范文】 As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were! The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. Thechildren said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again. The majority of them didn’t have working experience for they had spent most of their time at school studying academic subjects. It was not until they graduated from college that they realized it was a challenge for them to land jobs. Jimmy, one of these job hunters, was a young academically excellent person. One day, after making good preparations, he went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. In spite of fierce competition, he managed to pass the first interview. What a lucky dog! Jimmy was informed to come for the next round in a few days — the last interview for the company to make the final decision. The big day finally came. He dressed neatly, the grey tie matching perfectly the decent suit. Blood rushing to his face and heart pounding heavily, he tried to calm down, and then took a few deep breaths. It was his turn. The interviewer, an elegant lady, discovered from the CV that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research. After several rounds of questions related to the position, she asked, “Have you ever done any part-time jobs?” “None.” After a while, the interviewer asked who paid for Jimmy’s school fees. The youth answered in a low voice, “My father passed away when I was one year old, so it was my mother who paid for all my school fees.” She continued, “What did your mother do?” “My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.” The lady requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect. The interviewer paused for a second, leaning against the chair, “Have you ever helped your mother wash theclothes before?” Ashamed, Jimmy replied, “Never. My mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.” She nodded, adding, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me back here tomorrow morning.” Back home, Jimmy requested his mother to let him clean her hands. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________ The next morning, Jimmy went to the interviewer’s office. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________ 【经典范文】 Back home, Jimmy requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid. It was the first time he had noticed that there were so many bruises in her hands. His tears fell as he cleaned her hands. This was also the first time he had realized that it was the bruises in the mother’s hands that were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future. After cleaning his mother’s hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother. That night, mother and son talked for a very long time. The next morning, Jimmy went to the interviewer’s office. “What have you done and learned, young man?” Jimmy answered with tears in his eyes, “I cleaned my mother’s hands and all the remaining clothes.” The lady nodded, “Please share something with me.” The youth said, “Firstly, I know now what appreciation is. I was ten years old, but I was not looking forward to Christmas. The previous spring my mother had moved our family from rural Alabama to sunny Southern California. My little brother Todd, and I were leaving behind all of our extended family. This would be my first Christmas away from Alabama. I was a fat, awkward child with a high-pitched voice and a heavy southern accent. My first day at my new school, I went to the front of my fourth grade class to introduce myself. All I said was my name and where I was from. The class burst into laughter with jeers of “He talks funny”. It took the teacher two minutes to restore order. I was so disappointed that I went to a gas station afterschool and used the phone booth (亭子) there to place a call to my grandmother. I was going to ask her whether I could return to Alabama and live with her and whether she would send me the money for a bus ticket home. But the line was busy, and despite several attempts, I didn’t get through. My Granny was everything good about Christmas. Her language of love was food. She would spend weeks cooking for Christmas Eve when all of her children and grandchildren would gather at her house. Every favorite dish dessert and cakes was made. Her table and sideboard groaned (发吱嘎声) under the weight of the food. My cousins, my brother and I would burst through her backdoor, our arrival announced by the rhyme of five silver bells, which hung on the door. Her house was tiny but to us children, it was glorious. She sewed new night dresses for all of her grandchildren. She searched catalogs, newspaper advertisements, and stores all over town to get us exactly the toys we had requested. She was my comfort. She was magical. I missed her desperately. Fortunately, there was only one week left before the Christmas break. I was longing for my familiar southern Christmas. 注意: 1.续写的词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next morning, a large enough package from Granny was delivered to our new house. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Just then the phone rang. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 【经典范文】 During the Christmas break, a large enough package from Granny was delivered to our new house. It was too heavy for us to carry into the living room. To our surprise, it was large enough to hold a small refrigerator. Todd and I were giddy to know what it contained. We couldn’t wait to tear the box, delighted to discover mounds of homemade Christmas treats, presents wrapped in decorative paper, and neatly folded pajamas for each of us. As each gift came out, we shrieked with excitement. The box seemed bottomless and the smell of our Granny’s house was filling the air. Just then the phone rang. It was Granny. Todd and I chatted happily with her for nearly half an hour, a warm current rising. She asked us about school and assured us we had received the package. She did it in such a way that we both thought we were her favorite. For me, it was the highlight of Christmas. My granny packaged and shipped magic and love. She came to rescue me, softening my anxiety and lightening my life as well. The Magic Bus I was travelling on an overnight bus from Kolhapur to Aurangabad in Maharashtra. This was way back in May 1972, when I was still in college. The bus — an ordinary, nonair-conditioned one — was more than packed; all 55 seats were occupied and there were some 20 people standing in the aisle (过道). The hot day added to the discomfort of the rough, 10-hour journey. Because I was travelling on a student bus pass, I could not claim a reserved seat. I had no option but to stand — quite uncomfortably. The bus started its journey a little later than scheduled. The passengers seated comfortably by the windows wore happy expressions as they looked at the outside world, the breeze kissing their faces. The people seated by the aisle complained about the standing ones, who had no option but to occasionally lean on the seat corners. The air inside was hot and filled with strange, unpleasant smells. Some enthusiastic travellers had carried small transistor radios with the slim hope that they would be able to listen to some music on the way. After around two very long hours, I was beyond exhausted and bored. I kept trying to balance myself, shiftingmy body weight from one leg to the other to manage the discomfort. After another long hour, I was wet with sweat in the noise and shaky rhythm of the bus. I suddenly sensed a soft hand tapping my elbow (手肘), asking for attention. Turning around, I found a middle-aged man with a kind smile looking up at me. He suddenly stood up and said I could take his seat for some time. I was pleasantly surprised and immediately accepted his offer, my entire body heaving a sigh of relief. The man, whose seat I was in, stood next to me, looking around in amusement. After about 20 minutes, I signalled him to take back his space. A man, who was sitting by the window on the other side of the bus, had observed our exchange. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Just then, something magical happened. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ The bus reached its destination in the early hours of the morning. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ 【经典范文】 Just then, something magical happened. Our observer spontaneously stood up and offered his seat to another standing man, who had been leaning on the seat corner for quite some time. All of a sudden, we had triggered a chain reaction: This game of seat-sharing spread through the bus like wildfire and, before long, almost all the standees got a chance to be seated. More surprisingly, people even started chatting with each other while exchanging positions, and soon began sharing jokes and humming to the lovely melody played by the radio. Needless to say, the rest of the journey was quite enjoyable. The bus reached its destination in the early hours of the morning. A burst of first sunshine sent a beam of amber light through the window, lighting up people’s heart. The cool breeze of early morning blew away the fatigue and weariness, refreshing the minds and bodies. Immersed in this relaxing and friendly atmosphere, the groups bid farewell warmly, got off the bus and went their way. As I stood there soaking in the early morning light, I was reminded of an important life lesson — that we can all share what we have, including our burdens, and help our co- passengers in this journey called life. Jack lived in a small village surrounded by forests and he had always been fascinated by animals and often spent his free time wandering around the woods, observing them. One day, while wandering through the forest, Jack chanced upon a group of deer eating grass peacefully in a clearing (空地). As he approached them, they rushed away, frightened by his presence. Jack felt sad that the animals were afraid of him, and he decided to change it. Over the next few weeks, Jack visited the clearing every day, sitting quietly and patiently, observing the deer from a distance. Slowly but surely, the deer grew accustomed to his presence and started to approach him and allow him to pet them. Jack was thrilled that he had gained their trust. Inspired by his success, Jack started to explore the forest more and more, meeting different animals along the way. He encountered a family of rabbits, a pack of wolves, and even a group of bears. Although he was initially scared of the bears, he soon realized that they were just as curious about him as he was about them. Jack started to bring food for the animals, and they started to see him as a friend. He would sit with them for hours, watching them play and interact with each other. He learned so much about their behavior and habits, and he felt a deep connection with them. One day, while he was sitting with the rabbits, Jack heard a loud noise in the bushes. He was afraid that it might be a predator (捕食者), but to his surprise, a small fox emerged from the bushes. The fox was struggling to walk, and Jack could see that it was injured. Without hesitation, Jack approached the fox slowly, trying not to scare it. He saw that the fox had a thorn (刺) stuck in its paw, and it was in a lot of pain. Jack knew he had to help the fox, but he didn’t want to hurt it further. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 He sat down next to the fox and started talking to it in a soft voice. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ As he grew older, Jack’s love for animals grew stronger. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ 【经典范文】 He sat down next to the fox and started talking to it in a soft voice. He gently stroked its fur and, after a few minutes, managed to pull the thorn out. The fox licked his hand gratefully and stared at him with its big, brown eyes. From that day on, the fox would follow Jack everywhere he went. Tom’s friendship with the animals of the forest was the talk of the village. People would often see him wandering around with a pack of wolves or sitting with a family of bears. They were amazed by his ability to befriend animals that were supposed to be wild and dangerous. As he grew older, Jack’s love for animals grew stronger. He realized that animals were not just pets or creatures to be hunted, but they were his friends and companions. He started volunteering at an animal shelter, where he would help care for injured and abandoned animals. He also worked with local conservation groups to protect the forests and wildlife in his area. Jack’s love for animals had brought him a sense of purpose and fulfillment that he had never experienced before. He knew that he had made a difference in the lives of many animals, and he was grateful for the friendship and companionship of his animal friends.
