阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
George’s Feast
George’s mother was very poor. Instead of having bright, blazing (熊熊燃烧的) fires in winter, she had
nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees and hedges.
One fine day in July, she sent George to the woods, which were about two miles from the village in which she
lived. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could collect.
It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and
wished for a cool place where he might rest for a while and eat his dinner.
While he hunted around the bank of the stream, he saw among the moss (苔藓) some fine wild strawberries,
which were a bright red with ripeness (成熟).
“How good these will be with my bread and butter!” thought George. Lining (垫在……里) his little cap with
leaves. he set to work eagerly (急切地) to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the brook.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and contented. He thought how much his mother would like to
see him there, and to be there herself instead of in her dark, close room in the village. Ceorge thought of all this and
just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself, “How much Mom would like these!” He
stopped and put the strawberry back again.
“Shall I save them for her?” said George, thinking how much they would refresh his sick mother, yet still
looking at them with a longing eye. “I will eat half and take the other half to her,” said he at last and he divided
them into two piles. But each pile looked so small that he put them together again.
“I will only taste one,” thought he; but, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest,
and he put it back. “I will keep them all for her,” said he, and he covered them up nicely till he should go home.

at home, he resisted the temptation and gave up the idea. He arrived home before he knew it.

from her bed, George’s mother was surprised and very glad, with tears running down her face. She said, “My son,
you saved all for your sick mother. I am proud of you and you are a good boy!” At that moment, George and his
mother were both filled with happiness.

When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—Labor Day (May
Day). “Enjoy your extra day off, ” said the teacher to her class. An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. Sheloved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When she got off the school bus, Kayla ran into the
house happily.
“How was school, Kayla?” asked her mom.
“It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday. ”
“You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?” asked Kayla’s mom with a
laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. It rained most of the day, so Kayla
enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several
hours. Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was
awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in celebration of Labor Day, the family would do some
labour work. Kayla couldn’t believe it. This was a holiday! A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly
squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a
bad dream.
“Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let’s get a move on, ” said Kayla’s mom.
As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, “Are you serious about working today? Isn’t Labor
Day a holiday?”
“Yes, Kayla. It is, ” replied her dad. “But we thought working hard today would make you understand why
Labor Day was observed initially. “Though feeling disappointed and even a little annoyed, Kayla had no choice.

separated the door from the road. A pleasant-looking red-haired woman answered my knock.
“I’m Mrs Dodds from next door,” she said. “I keep an eye on the old lady. She’s over eighty and lives alone.”
She led me into the cramped little room. “Here’s Mr Herriot coming to see Peter for you,” she said to the oldwoman who sat in a corner. Mrs Tompkin nodded and smiled, “Oh that’s good. Poor little fella can hardly eat with
its long beak and I’m worried about him. He’s my only companion, you know.”
“Yes, I understand, Mrs Tompkin.” I looked at the cage by the window with the green budgie perched (栖息)
inside. “These little birds can be wonderful company when they start chattering.”
She laughed, “Yes, but it’s a funny thing. Peter never has said that much. I think he’s lazy! But I just like
having him with me.”
“Of course you do,” I said, “but he certainly needs attention now.”
The beak was greatly overgrown, curving away down till it touched the feathers of the breast. I would be able
to revolutionize his life with one quick snip from my clippers. The way I was feeling this job was right up my
street.
I opened the cage door and slowly inserted my hand.
“Come on, Peter,” I wheedled (哄骗). As I lifted him out, I felt in my pocket with the other hand for the
clippers. Then I stopped.
The tiny head was no longer poking cheekily from my fingers but had fallen loosely to one side. The eyes
were closed. He was dead.
Mrs Dodds and I looked at each other in horror. When I turned my head towards Mrs Tompkin, I was surprised
to see that she was still nodding and smiling.
I drew her neighbor to one side. “Mrs Dodds, how much does she see?”
“Oh, she’s very short-sighted but she’s right vain despite her age. Never would she wear glasses. She’s hard of
hearing, too.”
“Well, look,” I said. My heart was still pounding. “I just don’t know what to do. If I tell her about this, the
shock will be terrible. Anything could happen.”
Mrs Dodds nodded, stricken-faced. “Yes, you’re right. She’s that attached to the little thing.”

ladder. Mrs Tompkin looked lovingly at him. “You wouldn’t believe it,” she said. “He’s like a different bird,
chattering to me all day long. It’s wonderful what cutting a beak can do.” Hearing this, I feel relieved — my efforts
did bring her happiness.

leaving painful marks on its skin. Its tail flapped helplessly, each movement a request for help, while its desperate
cries for assistance echoed through the air.
A sense of urgency filled her, pushing her forward with determination and resolve. Realizing that time was
tight, Amelia knew she had to act instantly to free this innocent creature from its difficult position before it
submitted to exhaustion or the force of the tides.

and compassion were an inspiration to all who heard her story.
